CELEBRATE CANADA DAY WITH KIDS NIGHT AT OHSWEKEN SPEEDWAY
By Tommy Goudge (June 28, 2011) – School’s out, summer has officially
begun, and Ohsweken Speedway is celebrating with Kids Night this Friday,
July 1! The Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars, Lighthouse Tattoos
Thunder Stocks, HRW Automotive Mini Stocks, and Pierced Parts Bombers
will all be part of Friday Night Thunder this week, along with the
return of the Mod-Lite Stars Championship Tour North. Special Kids Night
activities include Box Car Races, and Junior Fan Club trophies.
CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS
The Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Cars will be back to regular action
this week, with “The Tilbury Tornado” Kyle Patrick leading the way.
Patrick is one of only two drivers to finish in the Top 10 in all
Corr/Pak features run so far this season. Jim Huppunen of Fenwick also
has three Top 10’s, including an impressive runner-up finish on June 17.
Defending Corr/Pak champ Dave Dykstra of Port Colborne is third in the
standings, followed by Burford driver Jamie Collard, and a 5th place tie
between Grimsby’s Travis Cunningham, and opening night winner Kyle
Moffit of South Dayton, NY.
Several Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car division regulars took part in
the Northern Summer Nationals event at South Buxton Raceway last
Saturday night, including 2008 Corr/Pak champ Keith Dempster, who was
awarded the feature win. Other Corr/Pak division regulars who made the
trip included Glenn Styres, Kyle Patrick, Jamie Collard, Bob Crawford,
Dain Naida, Mitch Brown, Chris Durand, Travis Cunningham, and John
Burbridge, Jr. The Northern Summer Nationals series will conclude
Friday, August 19 at Ohsweken, and Saturday, August 20 back at South Buxton.
MOD-LITE STARS CHAMPIONSHIP TOUR NORTH
The exciting Mod-Lites visited Ohsweken on June 10, when Port Colborne's
Shawn Sliter picked up the feature win. He was trailed to the finish
line by Josh Sliter of Ridgeway, Beamsville driver Paul Klager, Derek
Wagner of Middleport, NY, and Welland's Derek Moore. Shawn Sliter leads
the tour standings after 2 rounds, followed by Chris Steele of Vineland,
Josh Sliter, Bolton's Jason Corless, and Paul Klager. More information
on the Mod-Lite Stars Championship is available at www.ModLiteStars.org
LIGHTHOUSE TATTOOS THUNDER STOCKS
Twin 15’s for the Thunder Stocks highlighted the card two weeks ago at
Ohsweken, with Devin Habiuk of Port Robinson, and Cambridge driver Wyatt
Van Wart picking up feature wins, and an extra $50 each from Engine Pro
Racing. Habiuk leads the championship chase by 5 markers over Caledonia
driver Mike Thorne, while opening night feature winner Larry Czinege,
Jr. of Ridgeway, Brantford’s Brad Herron, and first-time winner Van Wart
round out the top 5. Cory Turner of Caistor Centre is 6th overall, and
leads the way in the Rookie of the Year quest. Lee Winger also has a
feature win in the Thunder Stock division this year, and sits 10th in
the standings. Thunder Stock division regular Rob Disher of Grimsby
represented Ohsweken Speedway on Saturday at South Buxton, driving to a
10th place finish in the Sport Stock feature.
HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Caledonia’s Mike Evers visited the Engine Pro Racing Winner’s Circle on
June 17 for the first time since May 30, 2008, breaking Karl Sault’s win
streak in the process. Sault, of Dundas, won the first two features of
his Mini Stock career, and continues to hold the points lead after a 4th
place finish. Brantford’s Jake Brown is second in the standings,
followed by Evers, Smithville driver Mike Sarantakos, and Burlington’s
Mike Taylor. Cayuga driver Abel Castelein returned to the track after a
flip the week before, and drove a borrowed ride to 2nd place at the end
of the June 17 feature. Castelein, a two-time champ, is 6th in the
standings. Sault leads the Rookie of the Year standings, with 7th
overall Jeremy Hughes the next closest challenger for the rookie title.
PIERCED PARTS BOMBERS
Trevor Roszell got his second straight feature win in Bomber action on
June 17. The Waterdown resident leads the championship chase, with
Rockton’s Dave Patton 8 points behind. The Waterdown-based father/son
team of Randy and Rodney Rutherford is third in the standings, followed
by Caledonia’s Craig Dowd, and Dundas driver Sarah Rutherford. Rodney
Rutherford scored the win on opening night.
