Thorold, Ontario (June 4) When Merrittville Speedway fans think INDY … the most recent win for Helio Castroneves in the Indy 500 and July 26th’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race come to mind.
For the Westlane High School Robotics Team – a trip to the racing capitol of the world means some competition of their own in an Invitational Event against 71 other robots from across North America.
Merrittville Speedway fans were introduced to the Westlane Robotics Team last season and when SMS Machine presents a retooled Lucas Oil Weekly Racing Series Race card – Saturday June 13th – the Niagara Falls High School will display this year’s design.
On track action will feature the third visit of the New York Modified Midgets - New York's first pure 600cc Modified Midget Series touring series that features drivers ranging in age from 14 years old to senior citizens.
A type of sprint car, the steel framed machines use motorcycle engines – just like the Modern Corporation Open Wheel Lites only half the size – limited to 600 to 637 c.c. but able to reach over 110 MPH at some races.
In one of their closest races of 2007 in their first visit, teenager Zach Morgan beat Jim Lafler for the win. In 2008, third generation driving sensation and former karter Eric Rudolph took his first series victory.
In 2009, Merrittville Kart fans will also recognize two familiar names as Matthew Farnham and Tyler Walker are solidly in the early point chase – 8th and 9th respectively.
May 30th’s rain now has June 13th’s schedule featuring the rain delayed Hoosier Stock Feature from April 25th joined by double features for the Turn 4 Collision 4 Cylinders – the first feature will be the Triple Crown 20 lap Series Opener in addition to double features for the Modern Corporation Open Wheel Lites and a regular Hoosier Stock Feature.
“We hope the changes aren’t confusing for our fans … the next couple weeks have many changes,” reassured Bicknell, “and our race teams will surely want to follow their weekly Inside Track Pit Notes … if it keeps up … we’ll have to do our schedules on dry erase cards next year!”

Westlane Robotics has completed its fifth year of competition and has already started planning for 2010.
This year the team from the Niagara Falls High School participated in a game called "Lunacy" where robots navigated a slippery floor to score points by launching balls ("moon rocks") into goals.
The Team attended Regional competitions in Rochester, NY and Toronto, Ont. before the Championship Event in Atlanta, Georgia.
We had a very exciting showing against the best robots in the world, seeding 2nd place in our division – losing a heartbreaking match in the semi-finals.
Westlane Robotics is now gearing up to attend an Invitational Competition in Indianapolis and are proud to be representing the Niagara area and Canada as we compete against other high schools.
