Spring Fever Blues Shakedown Day Two At Flamboro Speedway
By Randy Spencer - Day two of the Spring Fever Blues Shakedown got under way Sunday afternoon with feature racing after qualifying Saturday.
The Grisdale Late Models were on hand and would run two thirty lap features. The first one had Junior Farrelly and David Elliott on the pole for the thirty lap main event. Nineteen cars took the green and Elliott got out to the early lead. The race ran clean and Elliott led all the way. On the final lap however, the 9 of Jeff Ruddy and 27 of Kevin Albers got involved heading into turns one and two and brought out the caution and the race ended under yellow. The 39 of Corey Jones got the black flag for rough driving. It was an unfortunate end for Ruddy who was running second most of the race but Shawn Chenoweth got by Ruddy on lap 25.
The Flamboro Stadium & Speedway Hall of Fame Pure Stocks. Wayde Thorne and Lofton Schuts led the field to green. The 7 of Matt Young went high through three and four on lap 9 bringing out the caution. On the restart Thorne couldn't hold the lead and Andy Wheller got by followed by Josh Shantz. Another caution on lap 23 brought the field back to even. On the restart Shantz got by Wheller to take the lead and pick up the checkered flag.
The Klotz Auto Repair & Engine Machine Shop Mini Stocks were next for their 40 lap feature. Russ Aicken and Shawn Taylor were on the pole for this one. They battled early but Taylor's bad luck continued and he fell off the pace. Aiken however has had good luck of late and he ran away and hid from the rest of the field on this day. He pretty much dominated and lapped the entire field except for the 61 of Chad Ditner and 07 of Michael Kenny on his way to yet another feature win.
The Rays Auto Centre & Towing Thunder Cars were up next for the first of their two 20 lap features on the day. Shawn Arnott also has dominated of late and he got out to a good lead. The real battle was for second and third however as Brad Collison and Chris Howse battled. On lap 12 as the cars made their way out of turn two, the 36 of Hudson Nagy got into Collison bringing out the caution and Nagy was shown the black flag and made his way to the rear of the field. As the race continued so did Arnotts domination and he rolled to an easy feature win.
The Pro Four Modifieds hit the track for their feature event and Dan Nanticoke also dominated and ran away from the field. But an engine issue forced him to the infield and a DNF. Veteran Dave Hodgkinson found his way to the front and one of the original drivers in the Pro Fours picked up a checkered flag. Nice to see Dave back in Victory Lane!!
The OSCAAR Midgets were next Richard Woodland, Brian Woodland and James Stanley took off from the rest of the pack. By lap 8 Brian was gaining on Richard for the lead and the three continued a fierce battle right down to the last lap. Stanley made a daring move and went from third to first heading through 3-4 on lap 18. Richard seemed to lose some power and Brian took the lead and held on for a slim victory over Stanley.
The OSCAAR Modifieds hit the track for their 30 lap main event with the 99 of Luke Gignac leading lap one. On lap seven, the 14 of A.J. Emms got by Gignac on the inside as they went down the front stretch and the 8 of Gary McLean was up to third. A caution came out as the 19 of Dean Scott had a right front tire go down. Dan Price and John Harper also experienced some issues. The 8 of Gary McLean and 14 of A.J. Emms battled wheel to wheel for six laps but took each other out as they headed out of four bringing out the caution. Gignac was once again the new leader but it didn't last long. Veteran Gary Elliott took the lead and held it until lap 20 when he lost power with some engine issues and David Baylch took over the lead. He to would lose the lead as the 20 of George Wilson was now in front. On lap 24, Dan Price and Wilson were battling for the lead. Price went around out of two and that gave the lead back to Wilson and he would not relinquish it and picked up the feature victory.
The second Thunder Car feature saw Andrew Robertson and Bobby Mercer on the point. An early caution on lap one out of two saw the 36 of Hudson Nagys car expire bringing out the caution. Brad Collison was the leader off the restart and he wouldn't give it up although the 7 of Bobby Mercer seemed to be gaining as the race wore on but Collison would hold on for the feature win.
The last race of the night was the second thirty lap feature for the Late Models. Rick Burbridge would lead the first six laps but Nick Roth got by to take the lead on the back stretch on lap seven. Roth had a five car lead over Shawn Chenoweth,, Andrew Gresel and Burbridge. Gressel got by Chenoweth on lap 22 and was gaining on Roth but he was able to hold him off to pick up the win. Nice to see Nick in Victory Lane. Back on May 7th, Roth was pretty dejected as he pretty much destroyed the front right side of the car as a brake rotor broke sending him hard into the wall. Congratulations Nick!
That brought to an end another exciting weekend of racing. Please join us next weekend May 28th as the Lucas Oil Sportsman series returns for another 100 lap main event. They are joined by the Thunder Cars, Mini Sticks, Pure Stocks and Ontario Pro Challenge series. The Highwaymen Car Club are at the track for their annual event.
