Shane Maginnis Wins OSCAAR On Biederman Memorial Night
By Randy Spencer Flamboro Speedway PR) - A very busy August got underway at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway Saturday night with a visit by the Lucas Oil Can Am Midgets and the OSCAAR series for their annual Don Biederman Memorial Night. An inaugural inductee to the Flamboro Stadium & Speedway, Biederman was one of the most dominant, fierce and popular racers in Flamboro's history.
Racing got under way at 6pm with qualifying. The OSCAAR Midgets were up first. Brian MacDonald was on the pole for the first ten lap qualifier and has been so dominant this season. He picked up where he left last time in and got out to a big lead in this one and led all the way picking up the checkered flag. In the second qualifier, Ryan Brown duplicated MacDonald's first race feat leading all ten laps for the win. Brown didn't have it quite as easy as MacDonald. Wally Wilson in the 69 and Alex Cuzzilla in the 50 didn't let Brown to far out of their sights.
The Lucas Oil Can Am Midgets were up next for two ten lap qualifiers. Barry Dunn was on the pole and led lap one of the first heat. A caution on lap three as the 48 of Darren McLennan was around in turn two on lap three. On the restart, Dunn and Mack Deman battled for the lead. Deman made several attempts to take the lead from Dunn but wasn't able to get by. Nice to see Dunn win the race as he just celebrated a birthday this week. Happy Birthday Barry! Race two saw Rob Neely lead lap one. James Marche and Jeff Blackburn were close behind with Blackburn eventually moving to second and breaking away from the rest of the pack but Neely would hold on for the heat win.
The OSCAAR Pro Midgets were next for two heat races. Rob Summers led lap one of race one. By half way Summers was leading with Brian MacDonald and Glen Blaker close behind. March was up to second through three and four on lap six. Blaker got by for a short time to take the lead but Summers took it back and crossed the line first to take the win. In the second heat, Jordan Hannah led early and did so until lap seven when Ted Greenwood took the lead on the back stretch and held off Hannah to pick up the win.
Up next were the ground pounders, the OSCAAR Super Late Models. J.R. Fitzpatrick had a rough start. In the 4 car instead of his familiar 84 car, Fitzpatrick tagged the wall on lap one that slowed him a bit. Roy Passer led lap one. On lap two the 52 of Gary Passer was around out of two and the 40 of Charlie Gallant had no where to go and was into the side of Passer. Passer had a flat left side rear tire and was off. Gallant had some front end damage but was able to continue. Roy Passer continued to lead and picked up the win. In heat two, Shane Maginnis led lap one and started to break away from the pack and won handily.
Second round qualifying was up and the Midgets were back for heats three and four. Zack Millman led lap one but it wasn't long before Alex Cuzzilla took the lead and stretched it to a big lead in short order. As the checkers flew it was Cuzzilla in the Sunoco Fuels Victory Lane. Heat four saw Wayne McKibbon taking the lead early and leading flag to flag for the heat win.
Pro Midgets were next for two more heats. Ted Greenwood led lap one and would go flag to flag to pick up the heat win. In heat four, Katherine Summers led early. Glen Blaker was on Summers' bumper and took the lead on lap two. Cassidy March moved up to second and would battle Blaker for the rest of the race but Blaker held off March for the win.
Super Late Model heats three and four were next with Shane Maginnis in the lead early. Kelly Balson was on Maginnis' tail and never let hm too far out of his sights but Maginnis was just to strong and picked up the win. Heat four saw J.R. Fitzpatrick lead lap one. His woes in the heats continued as he experienced battery problems and was around out of two bringing out the caution. Glenn Watson was the new leader and held off the pack to pick up the heat win.
The first feature of the night was the first of two twenty lap races for the OSCAAR Modifieds. Luke Gignac led lap one. Chris Milwain was second but a great battle between he and Gary Elliott and Elliott got by for second through one and two on lap four. As the race continued Gignac was leading and seemed a sure winner until he slowed through one and two and a alternator issue ended his chance at the win. Gary Elliott was running second and would be the winner. So happy for the Iron Man, my hero. Congratulations Gary on your first OSCAAR Modified feature win.
The Ray's Auto Centre & Towing Thunder Cars were up for their first twenty lap feature. Chris Howse led lap one. Shawn Chenoweth was in the 76 car for Shawn Arnott who has taken a well deserved holiday break. Chenoweth showed no "Thunder Car rust" and was the new leader on lap two. Howse was having some handling problems and was back to fifth. As the checkers flew it was Chenoweth first followed by Brad Collison and Hudson Nagy.
It was intermission time and Gary Elliott brought his Modified to the front stretch. He handed out three trophies to some excited young fans.
The Midgets were up for their twenty five lap feature. Ryan Brown was the leader on lap one. Alex Cuzzilla was on Brown's bumper and the two battled early. Lapped traffic came into play and on lap 18 Cuzzilla took the lead from Brown and would hold off the pack to pick up his first feature win. At thirteen years old its nice to see this apple hasn't fallen far from the tree. On this special night, the Don Biederman Memorial, Cuzzilla's grand father Tom was a former racer with Biederman at the old Pinecrest Speedway where the two battled many times. A well spoken young man, in his Sunoco Fuels Victory Lane interview, he was very happy to win and spoke well of his sponsors and was happy to finally get a chance to say "A little bit of NAPA know how", in honor of one of his sponsors.
The Can Am Midgets were up for their feature and s always they salute the fans, as only the best go four abreast. Barry Dunn and Steve Murdock were on the pole. Murdock led lap one. Rob Neely, who started fifth, was up to second with Mack Deman to third. A few laps later, Jeff Blackburn went high through one and two and started a casual role and was over on his top. Red flag was out as emergency services rushed to the scene. They rolled the car over onto its wheels, Blackburn was out and ok. On the restart, Deman made his way to the front and out of four on lap nine Deman was the new leader. There was no looking back as Deman took the checkered flag.
The Pro Midget feature was next and the 1 car of Ted Greenwood experienced some early difficulties and was unable to take the green. The 55 of Jordan Hannah was the early leader and moved out to a huge lead. A great four car battle behind Hannah ensued between Rob Summers, Cassidy March, Jesse Costa and Brian MacDonald. Hannah had a full straight away lead and was dominating. Costa was doing all he could to catch up but he ran out of time and it was Hannah crossing the line first.
The Modifieds were up for their second twenty lap feature of the night. Dan Price was the pole sitter and led lap one. The Spider Man John Harper was on Price's bumper for several laps. Nice to see Harper back. Last time out he had some very extensive front end damage to his car. On lap four Harper began to make his move and dragged raced Price down the front stretch and they crossed the line in a dead heat. The next lap however Harper got by out of two and was the new leader. Price was shuffled to the outside and was back to the rear of the pack. Harper would hold off the rest of the field to pick up the win.
The Thunder Cars were up next. Early on the 74 of Kelsey Lamont got into the 11 of Adam Misener and around he went into the wall. This old 60's Chevy still had the chrome bumper and it was dragging and would eventually come off. Chris Howse led early but Brad Collison took the lead out of two on lap four. Shawn Chenoweth had moved up to Collison's back bumper and the two began a battle. A caution and eventual red flag as the 36 of Hudson Nagy spilled oil and the 21 of Andrew Robertson and 7 of Bobby Mercer got into it spinning out. Nagy stopped at the exit of turn four and oil was every where. Announcer Gary Colling spoke to Nagy on track and he said the drive shaft shot through the front of the car. A big hole to the right of his driver seat and it was lucky he was injured. Chenoweth was the new leader and as the cars came through four Collison got into Chenoweth and 13 was shown the black flag and was to the rear. On the restart Howse and Chenoweth battled and Howse went around in four and Chenoweth was shown the black flag. He stopped on the front stretch to show his displeasure at the call. Collison was the new leader and he held off the pack to pick up the win.
The final race of the night was the 50 lap feature for the OSCAAR Super Late Models. Roy Passer led lap one. Shane Maginnis wasted little time making his way to the front by lap four and taking the lead. He was turning 15 second laps and left the field in his dust.The 4 of J.R. Fitzpatrick was moving up. The fact Fitzpatrick was in this one at all was thanks to Thunder Car driver Bobby Mercer who took the battery out of his truck after the similar one in the 4 car was acting up in the heat race. Fitzpatrick got by Tyler Hawn on lap eighteen to move to fifth. Half way through Roy Passer was second and Glenn Watson on his bumper for third. A caution on lap 32 as Watson came to a stop just short of the exit. This brought the filed back to even and had Fitzpatrick up to second and lined up beside Maginnis for the restart. Maginnis was still in the lead and even through several restarts the 03 showed he was the best car on the night regaining the lead every time and making a clean sweep of his three races winning all three including the 50 lap feature event.
That brought to a close another exciting night of racing at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway. An exciting August continues this coming Saturday, August 13th for the APC United Late Model series presented by London Recreational Racing. Also on the schedule are the Flamboro Stadium & Speedway Pure Stocks, the Klotz Auto Repair & Engine Machine Shop Mini Stocks and the Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modifieds. In case of rain, the races will run Sunday August 14th.
On Saturday, pits open at 12 noon, practice starts at 230pm, front gates open at 4pm, time trials at 530pm with racing getting underway at 6pm sharp. Order of racing, APC time trials at 530, first set of features for the Pure Stocks, Mini Stocks and Canadian Vintage Modifieds. The APC last chance qualifying, then second set of features for the Pure Stocks, Mini Stocks and CVM. Then we will have an intermission followed by the 100 lap APC United Late Model feature presented by London Recreational Racing.
