Big Crowd Enjoy Great Racing And Fan Appreciation Night At Flamboro

By Randy Spencer - Racing season is quickly winding down and as every year John and Frank Casale like to show their thanks to all the fans and racers a like by having the annual Fan Appreciation Corn Roast. After the races everyone was invited to the pits for free corn and hot dogs. It was a big success as always. Thanks to all the fans and racers for making Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway one of the best short tracks in Ontario year after year and to John and Frank for all their hard work to make Flamboro a great place to watch racing.

Racing got underway at 6pm as six divisions were on the racing card. Just four racing events remain including this night so it's getting exciting. The night would begin with the Pro 4 Modifieds. Dan Nanticoke lined up along side Linc Erison as the cars took green. Nanticoke who has had an up and down year, got out to a big lead early in the heat. Aaron Turkey did all he could to stay close to Nanticoke. However on the final lap Turkey got a little high out of two and got loose and that allowed Craig Shaver to get by but there was no holding back Nanticoke and he picked up his third heat win of the season.

The Ontario Modified racing series Powered by TORQUE BUILDERS INC. was next with their heat race. Twelve cars took the green with Chris Burrows and Alex Lees on the pole. Lees wasted no time and got out to a nice lead. Nobody would put up much of a challenge and Lees led all ten laps to pick up the win.

The Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modifieds were up next for their two heat races. Ron Easton and Cassidy March were up front for this one. Easton has had some problems with his car so he was in the #6 car driven in the past by Adrian Donkers. Jeremy Riopelle who started third in the pack led the first couple of laps. Jason Keen, who is a top the points championship by a mere one point over Steve Trendell, got by Riopelle heading down the back stretch on lap three and never looked back taking the checkered flag. The second heat saw Dustin Hood and Ben Charbonneau on the point. Charbonneau led early but Trendell was right on his tail. It took a few laps but Trendell managed to clear him on lap seven heading down the back stretch and picked up the heat win.

The first of two Mini Stock features had rookie Nolan Quinton and veteran Mark DaSilva leading the cars to green. DaSilva led the first few laps but another veteran, Clark Hartman took the lead. He was followed by Russ Aicken and Hudson Nagy and the three put on a battle for several laps. You could throw a blanket over them as they saying goes they were so close. Aicken found his way to the front by lap 10 in turns 1 and 2. Nagy made his way by Hartman to take over second. Nagy and Hartman but on a great battle for the final ten laps but as the checkered flag flew it was Aicken taking the checkers followed by Nagy and Hartman.

The Thunder Cars hit the track next. Shawn Arnott and Brad Collison were up front. The two battled each other tough and hard. The two seemed to come together and that allowed Collison to take the lead. Arnott slowed to a stop bringing out the caution with a flat right front tire. Collison continued to lead off the restart and  a real battle was on between Kevin Gallant and Mark Burnridge for the next two spots. They battled hard back and forth for several laps. As the laps ticked down Collison would take the win followed by Burbridge and Gallant.

The Grisdale Late Models were up and fourteen cars took the green. This was a heated affair. Several early cautions for spins narrowed the field. Dale Shaw would assume the lead off a restart on lap seven. David Elliott and Nick Roth got mixed up bringing out another caution. With eight laps to go Dave Osborne got around in turn two and Linda Stenhouse had no where to go and took a hard hit ending her night. Another caution as Trevor Monaghan and David Elliott mixed it up. Brad Corocoran got a good jump on the restart. Corcoran and Dale Shaw got mixed up in 1 and 2. Heading down the back stretch trouble was a brewing and as the cars entered three with a full head of steam the two once again got involved and Corcoran clipped Shaw sending him spinning backwards into the wall. As these two were the leaders, several other cars had no where to go. Kevin Albers, Steve Cashmore. Trevor Monaghan, Al MacLean and Bill Pearsall all ended up involved. This would put the 15 car of Matt Lockwood up front. He led several laps and as the checkers flew it was Lockwood picking up his first Late Model feature win. Congratulations on #1!!

The Pro 4 Modifieds were up next for their 15 lap feature event. Aaron Turkey and Dan Petit were up front. Turkey shot out to a big lead early. Brian Nanticoke who leads in points has had some tough luck lately was shown the black flag for a mechanical issue and took it to the infield. Dan Nanticoke, Craig Shaver and Mark Lucas would battle for the lead for several laps. Shaver got into Nanticoke on lap 11 in turns 3 and 4 bringing out the caution bringing the field back to even. Turkey's big lead was gone and Mark Lucas was ready to pounce. Although he kept it close there was no beating Turkey on this night!

The Canadian Vintage Modifieds were up next for their 25 lap main event. Dustin Hood and Cassidy March were out front. March led for the first half of the race. T.J. Marshall was battling Jeremy Riopelle for second and third and Marshall tapped Riopelle sending him around and Marshall who had won four of the past six features including the past three here at Flamboro would be sent to the rear of the pack for the restart. On the restart, march was a sitting duck and Jason Keen, followed by Steve Trendell were now out front. A caution late as Ron Easton had a broken front end from all accounts and also collected Mike Podd and Joe Atkinson. On the restart, Keen continued to battle and hold off Trendell and as the checkers flew Keen picked up the victory to stay a top the points standings.

The second Mini Stock feature once again saw rookie Nolan Quinton up front. He lined up beside Gillian Hils. Hils led for a bit early on but Jake Gilbert was knocking in her back door. Russ Aicken and Rdney Rutherford were also close by. Rutherford and Aicken got into each other and Aicken limped back to the pits. Another disappointing night for the 71 team in this one. Rutherford was now firmly in the lead with Hudson Nagy and Gillian Hils right there but it was Rutherford picking up the long awaited feature win.

Thunder Cars hit the track with Justin Collison and Bobby Mercer on the pole. Collison was out front early and continued to lead Mercer and Kevin Gallant was there in third. A battle for fourth through sixth as Shawn Arnott, Mark Burbridge and Brad Collison ensued. As the race was approaching completion Justin Collison continued to lead. Arnott was there on his bumper. It looked like the younger Collison may pickup that elusive feature win but Arnott battled and would get by on the back stretch on the final lap to steal the victory from the 12.

The Late Models were up for the second last feature on the night. David Elliott started inside of Trevor Monaghan and he immediately shot out to a huge lead. Talking to Elliott prior to the race they had finally figured out what had been plaguing them all season. An air filter issue and it was corrected and Elliott was gone. Nick Roth tried to keep it close and Dale Shaw was in third. They battled for the remainder and thats the way the crossed the start finish line giving Elliott the victory.

The Ontario Modifieds were the final regular race of the night. Rick Warnes and John Baker Jr. were out front as the cars took green. Baker would take a big lead. He was battling some lapped traffic and on lap 12 the 40 of Donny Beatty got into Baker down the front stretch as he was racing the leader. Baker's night was as was Beatty as he was disqualified. This would put heat winner Alex Lees out front followed closely by the 46 of Ryan Baben. The two broke away from the rest of the pack and Lees was just too much for Baben and he made a clean sweep adding the feature win to his earlier heat win.

The Canadian Vintage Modifieds held their annual Mechanics race. It was a ten lap race where the regular drivers loan their car to a member of their crew or some other person involved with the club. This seemed to be a match between the brothers Colling. Gary, one of our announcers and his older brother Glenn, both former racers for many years in the 1980's. They took green and Shaun Pascoe led lap one. Gary Colling was in second and gaining. Before long he shot out to the lead. Several cautions but as they resumed the Collings battled and the final lap was very exciting as it looked like Glenn may take the lead from younger brother Gary but it wasn't meant to be. In the Winner's Circle, Gary couldn't help but rub it in to brother Glenn. Glenn had been out earlier in the week practicing and Gary had no seat time. Gary tells me it was his first time in a car in about 20 years. It was 20 years ago this past weekend he won his final feature race at Sauble Speedway in a CVM. Congratulations Gary and to all the competitors for this exciting and fan friendly race!
