TWO DJ-'S WIN AND HEARTBREAK FOR ROBBLEE-'S POINTS RUN
Feature winners: DJ Kennington, Ron Sheridan, DJ DeJesus, Tyler Hendricks
June 25,2010 (London, Ontario) The Maple City Tire 100, twin 50-lap races for the NASCAR Late Models, offered the highest high and lowest low for DJ Kennington and a big first feature win for another DJ - DJ DeJesus. Steve Robblee didn-'t finish the first 50 and wasn-'t able to make it out for the second while Ron Sheridan rode back to Victory lane.
In the first 50-lapper Pete Vanderwyst, record-holder for the fastest NASCAR Late Model lap at Delaware (18.656) had the pole. The first caution came at lap 4 as Doug Stewart (2) and Gord Shepherd (10x) tangled on turn one. Stewart told Jamie Maudsley the rest of his season was now in question. Shepherd returned to the race in short order. This yellow flag gave Jesse Kennedy a chance to visit the pits and get a new gas cap for his #10. Meanwhile, Jamie Grover (33) needed to make a stop to get his power steering tended to and he didn-'t make it back out for the first or second 50. The 69 of Lloyd Rawlings overheated and also needed a race-long rest.
Lap 6 had another yellow flag after some bunching up of the leaders on turns 3 and 4. Vanderwyst and DJ Kennington were racing hard and appeared to play a bit of bumper tag. Ron Sheridan (#52) ended up at the back of the pack as did Jesse Kennedy.
Still at lap 6, a third caution flag for a flying piece of debris that turned out to be the fender of the 78 of Mark Watson. As the race restarted, leader Vanderwyst pulled onto pit road giving up the lead to Kennington and another caution was called as the 4X of Craig Zerbrigg broke down on the front stretch. Vanderwyst-'s car looked like it was going to come back out quickly but the issue ended up being more serious than first thought and he didn-'t reemerge.
Steve Robblee (28) moved into second, Scott Lindsay third. At lap 23, a caution flew as Robblee spun at the turn three wall after he made contact with the 8 of Marc Jacobs in heavy lap traffic. The left rear of Robblee-'s car got bent up and although at first it was hoped a little time with the crew and duct tape would save it, Robblee-'s night ended in huge disappointment as he sat out for the rest of it.
Caution 5 came at lap 27 with a minor tangle between Jay Christie (5) and Craig Zerbrigg (4x).
Some old school history came to class in the last third of the race, between Kennedy (10) and Mark Watson (78). Watson stayed ahead of Kennedy, bumpers touched, sparks flew and finally Kennedy showed Watson his taillights. Meanwhile Kennington increased his lead to more than half a straightaway with Scott Lindsay and Andrew Gresel working to catch him. Ron Sheridan worked his way up the pack to fourth. Caution 6 arrived with 6 laps to go as Kris Martin (46) and Rick Emery (14) connected on the front straightaway.
Coming off that caution, Watson spun on turn three but righted himself and carried on. Marc Jacobs spun on the front straightaway at lap 47 for the race-'s 7th caution and for the end of Jacobs-' run in the first 50 lapper.
Kennington won the race, followed by Scott Lindsay, Andrew Gresel, Ron Sheridan and John Urlin.
The second 50 lap race ended very quickly for Kennington. He spun after contact with Shawn Thompson (72) and Marc Jacobs (8) before the first lap was completed and word came up to the officials that he sustained a broken transmission. A second attempt at the first lap also failed as Jay Christie (5) twirled on turn two and shot a bit of fire from under his chassis. The crew arrived to haul him off but he drove himself away.
Jay Christie had the pole but Mark Watson took the lead at the second lap.
Matthew Box (27)had visited the pits at the start of the race because of brake problems but he made it back out thanks to the restart but a spin of the 27 that first appeared to be a blown tire, caused the first real caution at lap 2.
Another brief caution called at lap 6 because of debris on the back straightaway. A third caution at lap 6 came as Cole Powell (25) ran into the front wall. Gord Shepherd (10X) got caught up in it and his night was finished.
At lap 15 a multi-car entanglement ended in a dramatic head-on crash between Shawn Thompson and Matt Box. When Thompson-'s 72 spun around the 27 had nowhere to go. Both men emerged from their cars okay and the crews worked quickly to clean up the mess of fluids and wrecked cars.
Caution at lap 23 as Jamie Ramsay (22) and John Urlin (4) connected.
They say slow and steady wins the race but in Ron Sheridan's case, it's fast and steady. He started the race deep in the pack and took over the lead at lap 38. At lap 46 it appeared a little payback was paid in full for some earlier bumping as Mark Pritiko (21) and Jesse Kennedy (10) tangled at turn one, and Kennedy spun into the wall, causing another caution and another shoot-out finish.
Sheridan logged another win with Jamie Ramsay and Mark Watson behind him. In Super Stocks, DJ Dejesus took the lead from Chris Nagy right off the hop and rode to victory lane twice - having taken the first Super Stock heat as well as the 25 lap feature race - his first ever feature win.
The race included some very impressive saves as drivers running 5th through 12th clustered up like flies on a hotdog wrapper. A couple of cautions in Super Stocks: At lap 20 the 7 of Jared Shield took a spin and Chris Root lost a tire off #69 at lap 22. After DeJesus, Jason Lidster came second in Super Stocks, followed by Jake Ott, Scott Nagy and Steve Smith.
Powerade Modifieds offered some high speed thrills as well as vindication for the winner, Tyler Hendricks, who was leading and then got taken out in a crash during the last Modifieds race.
We started with Justin Demelo at the pole until he was overtaken by Hendricks (38) at lap 7. And despite a hard run by Jamie Cox at the last lap, Hendricks held on for the win. The race had one caution at lap 23 caused by a spin on the front stretch by the 88 of Paul Shipway, who did not finish the race. Jamie Cox landed second followed by Barry Newman.
