APC Late Model Championship Twin 25s - Race 1

The qualifying order for these two races was similar to the one they used a few weeks back, in that the 1st race was determined by the first tim trial lap, and the second race determined by the second time trial lap. They ran straight up. (no inversion) A note, the red Delisle car was numbered with a jury rigged 10 for the Delaware races. Kennedy started scratch in each race and completed only one lap. (maybe a favor to everyone else? NASCAR points are partly based on car count.)

Your front row is 15-Matthews and 52 Sheridan, followed by 28-Robblee/02-Watson, then 4-Urlin/20-Lindsay. Opening lap Matthews jumps to an early lead while Sheridan and Robblee, our two main championship contenders, battle side by side for 2nd. Once they get through the opening laps, the order shakes out to Matthews, Robblee, Sheridan, Urlin, Watson, Lindsay and Hooker. Lap 5 is our first incident when 72-Thompson goes around in turn 1 and 2-Stewart spins to avoid. Stewart's car glances off Thompson, but neither seem too badly damaged.

Under theis caution there seems to be a little bit of confusion as to whether or not laps are being counted under yellow. The scoreboard is ticking them down, but we've been told they won't count. Were all the way up to lap 9 or 10, then they back it back down to lap 7, so they decided cautions wouldn't count.

Now on the lap 7 restart, they take the green and the next lap Watson gets squirelly down the backchute casuing the field to stack up, but with no major mishap until Watson gets to turn 3 and loops it. The officals feel that the spin was courtesy of 22-Ramsay but it was an iffy call I thought. Ramsay and Watson to the back.

Now after the restart, Robblee's putting early pressure on Matthews with Sheridan lurking in 3rd spot. They continue till lap 12 when 27-Box appears to go around in 1 all alone. Caution.

After this restart, by lap 17 Matthews and Robblee are on the run with a few lengths seperating them from the 2nd pack of Sheridan, Urlin and Lindsay. The best race on the track right now is for 6th, a three way tilt between Watson, Hooker and 77-Verhoeven, which Vehoeven eventually wins.

Up front, Robblee has closed on Matthews and the two of them have about ten lengths on everyone else. Robblee gives it the old college try, but the young gun Matthews takes the race. 1st Matthews, 2nd Robblee, 3rd Sheridan, 4th Urlin, 5th Lindsay.

Invaders Race - 25 laps.

For posterity, and in qualifying order, our 2009 visiting team consists of 5x Kennedy, 3-Kennington, 19-Brendan Watson, 49-Clarke, 61-Hathaway, 03-McGinnis, 56-Pyle, 82-Shaw, 3x-Powell, 31-McWhirter, 182-Demelo (sporting Vanderwyst Racing logos), 21-Pritko (other Ramsay car re-numbered) 106-Wild, 91-MacGillvary, 4x-Zurbrigg, 24-Josiasse (guy that owns Peterboro Speedway) 9-Trevor Monaghan (Elliott's Fri nite car) 5-Delisle and 7-Vanderwyst.

;D ;DI say this every year but it bears repeating - to the invaders that might be reading this, thanks so much for making the trip. You guys make this Labor Day show what it is, just as much as the Delaware guys do. On behalf of the fans - we salute and thank you for the effort. Come back anytime! ;D ;D

The summary of the race is actually a pretty short one. Kennedy gets out in front. He's on rails and smokes the whole field. Kennigton and Watson stage a pretty good battle for 2nd, but neither has anything for Kennedy. This race is pretty much a freight train, with no real passing up front, and they end pretty much in the order they started. At the drivers meeting they reiterated that it was just for qualifying order and everyone was making the show - so it didn't make much sense for the guys to push em too hard anyway. (One incident on the white flag lap when Wild loops it in turn 2 and almost collects Kennedy.) 1st to Kenndy, 2nd to Watson, 3rd to Clarke, 4th to McGinnis, 5th to Hathaway.

Vanderwyst had a disappointing day. We expected to see him gunning for the lead, but it never transpired. Likewise for Pyle. I was expecting him to be hot, but his last outing with us on a Friday night was more competitive than he was today.

APC Late Model Championship Twin 25s - Race 2

So now we come down to it. By my own rough calculation, Robblee was a point ahead going in, but it was announced that it was a dead heat for 1st.

Front row this time out has Watson on the pole with Robblee alongside, then Matthews and Sheridan. Watson jumps out front first and Sheridan gets shuffled back to 5th. After it shakes out, the top 3, Watson, Robblee and Matthews are nose-tail and on the run. Lap 7 or 8 and Watson drifts high in 1 allowing Robblee to get a nose under. They race side by side but Watson cant keep Robblee at bay. Robblee slips into 1st and Watson falls out of line all the way back to 7th.

Now at lap 10, Matthews is right on Robblee's bumper, followed by Sheridan, Lindsay, Hooker and Urlin. At one point, Matthews gets loose and Sheridan gets by. But there's caution thrown when 14-Emery goes around in 4. Sheridan was in 3rd at the last completed lap, so he pulls in behind Matthews again.

After this restart, we have a big one in turn 4 with cars everywhere. Thompson, Hooker, 89-Spicer, Box and Ramsay are all involved, though Ramsay and Box seemed to get the worst of it after hitting the wall. All drove away however.

Now were down to the waning laps. Its still anyone's championship, and the order is Robblee, Matthews, Sheridan and Lindsay. Sheridan and Lindsay have a duel, but its a duel that sees Sheridan spinning around, and OUT of the points battle (unless of course Robblee crashes.)

Now Matthews only has a couple tries left and he's trying everything possible to get around Robblee. He gets loose and out of line however and seems to fall off the case qute dramatically. (He finished 9th)

In the end its Robblee with the win, and the APC LM championship. 2nd to Urlin, 3rd to Lindsay, 4th to Watson, 5th to Verhoeven.

Now there's a long break in the action. It was deemed that a consi was not necessary, so really it was the Total/APC 275.  😀

APC/Total 200 Lap Finale

Your starting grid is Robblee with Kennedy alongside, then Urlin/Kennington, then Lindsay/B Watson, Matthews/Clarke, Sheridan/McGinnes, and Verhoeven/Hathaway. Top finishers from the Delaware races on the inside lane, invaders to the outside.

Kennedy shoots out front right away, and on lap 2 almost loses it in trun 2 on his own, but manages to hang on and stay in front.

Lap 5 Caution - 03-McGinnis, 56-Pyle, 3x-Powell 61-Hathaway and 21-Pritko tangle in 3 and 4. I believe it was due to a tire going away on Hathaway's car and the scramble to avoid it. Front end damage on most cars, but McGinnis seemed to have taken the brunt of it and is out for the day. At this point 36-Elliottt is on pit road with some kind of issue. Hathaway and Powell spend a long time up on jacks. (Pritko is driving the alternate 22 car, re-numbered 21)

Then a lap or 2 after the restart, there's another mess, this time on the backstretch involving a lot of cars. When the smoke cleared it was 02-Watson and 2-Stewart with the brunt of the damage. The 02 goes back on the flatbed, and Stewart suspects some of his fingers might be broken. Long red flag. Also involved are 37-Elliott, 22-Ramsay, and 72-Thompson. (looked like Ramsay was done for the day too)

NOTE, from this point forward in the report, Watson refers to the 9 (renumbered 19) car. Delaware's Watson, the 02, is out for the day.

Now we get some green flag racing in and the order is Kennedy, Robblee, Urlin, Kennington, Lindsay, B Watson, Matthews and Sheridan. Kennedy's running solid in the front, but Robblee is not too far behind. Its single file in that order for a while, except for a drag race between 77-Verhoeven and Sheridan. They make contact and Verhoeven goes around to bring out the caution.

Lap 30 Now they're racing hard. Robblee's been putting serious pressure on Kennedy but Kennedy's been hanging on. But now Kennedy drifts up, and Robblee's in front. Kennedy's now out of line falls all the way back to 8th. After a few circuits, Robblee seems to be having trouble of some type. The lead changes again as Urlin gets by him handily. Robblee starts falling back. For the next little while its Urlin, Kennington, Robblee, B Watson and Matthews.

Now at the 50 lap mark, Kennigton starts to exert some pressure on Urlin. Robblee holds 3rd well in hand and Brendan Watson is 4th. The 4 of them have formed a lead pack and are on the run.

Lap 56 - Caution when 4x-Zurbrigg and 9-Trevor Monaghan tangle on the fronstretch to bring out a red flag for a blocked speedway. (The 9 is one Elliott drives on Fri nite) Bad damage on the 9 car, and when he comes out a number of laps later, the entire right half of the car is free of body panels. It's at this point we notice that Vanderwyst isn't really even in the picture. He's up on jacks on pit lane and stays there. Once they start moving again, Urlin cant get it fired and needs a bump start. Then on the white flag lap, the car stalls again right in the middle of the frontstretch. he gets a push in, and is still in when the green flag flies.

So now Kennington has inherited the lead and makes it his own as he begins to run away on everyone. (Not bad for a guy that was doubtful to even start because of some injuries.) Now Matthews begins to make some moves and is pushing Robblee for 2nd. He gets under and next thing you know, Robblee is out of line and falling back to 6th. Now Matthews is in 2nd but getting some pressure from 19-Watson. Watson actually outfoxes Matthews in some lap traffic to take 2nd. Now the order is Kennington, Watson, Matthews, Clarke, Kennedy and Robblee, and its apparent that Robblee is fighting his own car.

At the 100 lap competition yellow, the lead lap cars are Kennington, Watson, Matthews, Clarke, Kennedy, Robblee, Sheridan, Lindsay, 31-McWhirter, 182-Demelo, Verhoeven and Hathaway. They go in and Robblee's guys go straight to work, popping the hood and, according to the announcers, apparently dumping some coolant on the brake rotors. Lot of smoke and flame, but it seems to do the job.

Now things that have been relatively clean thus far, start to get a little messy. Matthews bumps Watson out of line and gets the black - sent to the back. This brings Kennedy up into 2nd, and now the order is Kennington, Kennedy, Clarke, Watson, Sheridan and Robblee. Sheridan and Robblee stage a pretty good dogfight for 5th, interrupted by a caution when Matthews, on his way up from the back, shoves 81-Gresel out of the way and spins him. Another black flag for Matthews, who is held on pit road for a stop and go this time.

The order is tha same now and by lap 128, Kennedy is going to work on Kennington and almost gets by thanks to some lap traffic, but he doesn't seal the deal. Now there's another caution when 8-Jacobs goes around alone on the frontstretch. This restart is a messy one, as it looked to us like they dropped the green while the guys were still sorting out the order. Gresel, 14-Emery, Verhoeven and McWhirter go around on the fronstretch near turn 4. Most are basically OK except McWhirter who goes back to the pits on the hook.

Now Kennedy resumes his efforts to get past Kennington, while Robblee and Clarke battle side by side for 3rd. Lap 145 and there's a little schmozzle where Matthews goes around with help from Sheridan...a little payback for something that happened earlier? Now while this is going on, Kennedy gets a nose under Kennington. Kennington drifts high...and Kennedy's back in front. Now its Kennedy, Kennington, Robblee and Watson.

By lap 160. Kennington wants his front spot back again and begins to push Kennedy to his limits. Its a duel for 3rd between Robblee and Watson, with Clarke lurking right behind them.

Now more mishaps. At one point, 72-Thompson goes around in 2 to bring out a caution, and another on the restart when 36-Elliott goes hard in the backstretch wall.

Now we're getting ip to lap 170, and its an all red top 3 with Kennedy, Kennington and Robblee leaving the field behind. They know the checker flag is coming and all 3 want it bad. Kennington pushing Kennedy as hard as he can and going into turn 2 there's contact. Kennedy drifts high and Kennington takes the spot. Robblee goes with him. Now its Kennington, Robblee, Kennedy and Watson. Now Robblee is making his move, going high on Kennington and going low, then giving him the rub.

We're down to about 15 to go and Robblee ducks low going down the backchute and gets a nose under Kennington. They're side by side into 3 and whoa...there's contact. Both Kennington and Robblee are IN the fence...and Kennedy goes shooting past into the lead spot! And were Robblee and Kennington happy with each other? HO no they were NOT!

Now the restart sees Watson pushing Kennedy hard, but Kennedy's too strong for him. It ends up another dogfight for second, this time between Watson and Clarke, whick Watson wins.

And at the checkered, Its Kennedy, then Watson, Clarke, Sheridan and Matthews.

Shadow when you said one of the best Labour Day races you are not wrong it had everything 7 lead changes between 4 cars (3,4,5x,28),Lead changes were
5x-1-35
28-36-42
4- 43-56
3-57-154
5x-155-187
3-188-189
5x-190-200
Cautions were 11 for 56 laps and 2 Red flags
Action pack yes especially when DJ Kennington & Steve Robblee spun each other on the dying moments of the race on lap 189 when Jessie Kennedy took the lead and to Bransdon Watson trying to get Jessie lose on the restart of lap 195.Yes it was a great race one that will be hard to beat but in auto races changes always happen and another great race will happen again in the future.

Finale race summary up now. Im gonna call it a night as its been a long couple of days.

I have all the time in the world tomorrow when I get home from work, and a full blown report and commentary will be up then.

For the time being, I'll just say this. It was a really great day. Not just because of the races but because of the company. The Richmond Row gang - I love you guys. The Lakes - you guys rock. (High five to little Shane - my number one partner in crime.) All the rest of you guys, the CRO faithful...its been great, and thank you for the kind words regarding the stuff in the program.

And I finally got to meet Justin, Wheelspin, and Dougy109! Great to know you both.

3 Wide, hope you made it to the race, enjoyed the hell out of it, and made it home safe.

Oval - We'll get the login thing sorted out.

Racingwrench...always a pleasure, and Bill R. we'll get together for sure.

JesKen10 - Brother...what a show. I so wanted to come down and see ya's but had places I needed to be. I'm glad you didn't quit. And a huge shout out to the Delisle gang. Great work, and congratulations on the win. Kyle...keep at it bud - It won't happen overnight.

Arlen and Delaware staff: You've no idea how much I enjoyed the season, and how much satisfaction I get from my involvement with you guys. Kudos to you all for making Delaware the place to be. (and a pat on the back for whoever decided on the new hotdogs this year...I already want another one.  :))

OK. Good night all.

just to play devils advocate. Did anyone else think they started too many cars? I think it would have been more comfortable, for lack of a better word, with 32. Sorry someone has to go home It might discourage cars like the 57 from doing the 1 lap for the $400.00 to start.
I was sorry to see Pyle get caught up in the McGuinnis mess.  Surprised to see a big organization like Howe racing using just a crew cab pickup and an open trailer. Guess a stacker hauler doesn't make your car go any faster.
Use of the blag flag was questionable on Urlin and Mathews trying to move cars that were 1 1/2 lanes wide. Maybe the black should have been used on cars that wouldn't yield to faster cars. Or should everyone adopt Tom Curley's Pink Road Hog flag that ACT uses. LOL
Hard luck goes to Urlin. Worked his tail off to get up to the front and then have that major electrical problem.
Is it me (being primarily a dirt fan) but does anyone else think it takes a long time to get things going after a simple caution? Besides crew to driver radios, isn't the tower on a one way radio to the drivers also?
I guess what has suprised me in my visits to Delaware this season is the use of two way radio for 25 lap features. Dirt brought out the Danny Johnson rule a few years ago which limited two ways to races of 200 laps or more. They mandated the one ways from the tower to the driver instead. Dirt found there was too much "radio controlled driving" and I worry the 25 lappers are going that route. It must feel odd for Kirk Hooker when he hops in his dirt super late model with no mirrors or two way radios!
Qualifying procedure is hard to explain to anyone not from Delaware. I think I would just like to see time trials determining starting positions for 4 twelve lap heats based on the number of cars there today with a consi for final spots. Like I said before, I don't think everyone should qualify just by showing up. They should earn it and it would likely make for fewer cautions caused by back markers. But I guess it was almost like having two regular weekly features thrown in as quallifying races.
Just some random thoughts......
