The arrival of the ISMA Super Modifieds at Delaware Speedway is one of the most highly anticipated events of the year.  This year promises to be twice as exciting as the ISMA cars invade Delaware Speedway for two days of speed, action, and great racing memories presented by Sloan Insulations and Patco Transportation.  There is also an added $4,000 on the line for the ISMA drivers put up by Corr / Pak Merchandising.  2009 marks the fourth year in a row the coveted series has graced the Delaware half-mile after a previous twenty-year absence.

The cars in the American-based ISMA (International Super Modified Association) are the most powerful cars to visit Delaware Speedway each year.  The majority of the vehicles are home built by the race teams themselves.  The light weight of the cars combined with the over 850 horse power the cars generate create a recipe for quick times around the speedways the series visits.  The cars also have large wings mounted on top of the car mounted on air shocks which change the aerodynamic characteristics of the vehicle to create extra down force in the turns and reduce drag on the straights.  The cars are also directly driven off the engine which means the cars require a push start and have no starter and no battery to further reduce the weight of the cars.

The ISMA Super Modifieds will be racing on Friday, August 7 running their heat races and a 30-lap feature sponsored by Sloan Insulations.  On Saturday, August 8 the action heats up with heat races and a 50-lap feature for the ISMA cars sponsored by Patco Transportation.

The ISMA Super Modified drivers will have an added incentive to attend the two-day event.  Corr / Pak Merchandising is putting up a special prize bonus program the “Tammy 10-Thousand Dollars”, named after the legendary Tammy 10 Super Modified race car piloted by Harvey Lennox at Delaware Speedway.    The company is making an additional $4,000 available as a bonus to a driver who is able to win both races.  If a driver is able to win both events, the $4,000 combined with the ISMA purse money would earn them a total of $10,000.  If different drivers win each race, the $4,000 will be divided up among

the top-5 drivers from each feature race over the two days.  Harvey Lennox himself will be on hand throughout the weekend signing autographs and meeting with fans.

Along with the ISMA cars, Delaware Speedway’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series classes will be taking to the track.  Friday evening features the APC Late Models, Demar Aggregates Trucks and the popular Throne King’s of the Hill Spectator’s race.  Saturday night highlights the Delaware Speedway Super Stocks and POWERADE Modifieds.  Spectator gates on both days open at 6:00 pm with racing starting at 8:00 pm.  Saturday night also features a special autograph session for the ISMA Super Modifieds.

The early bird discount for ISMA Super Modified tickets ends this upcoming Friday, July 31.  Fans who purchase their tickets early through the delawarespeedway.com website (here) will receive a discounted admission.  Tickets will continue to be available through the website after the early bird pricing ends and will also be available at the gate.

The weekend also features free unserviced camping with admission.  The campground is located behind the back straight and is accessible on a first come-first-served basis.

Prior to the August 7-8 race weekend, the next race event is this upcoming Friday, July 31 sponsored by Hayter Walden Publications and Phone Guide Access Pages.  The racing lineup features the POWERADE Modifieds, Delaware Super Stocks, and Demar Aggregates Trucks.  The evening will also feature the wild Ultimate Sandblasting and Coating Chaos Cars running their obstacle course following the final feature race.  Gates open at 6:00 pm racing starts at 8:00 pm.

In honor of the upcoming SuperModified weekend, heres a few youtube clips worth watching.

First is one that Delaware did a couple of years ago with London's own Mark Sammut. In this one, Mark outlines exactly what a Super Modified is.

Next one is a great in-car video. We're on board "Liquid" Lou Cicconi's number 75 Super for the feature at Stafford Speedway, a track that looks roughly the size of Delaware.

Yup....that one with the on-board cam makes you realize it takes a special kind of someone to drive one of these things. One part cojones-of-steel, one part rocket scientist, and one part nuttier-than-a-fruit-bat.

Can't wait to see the show though.

Here's a Freeps story from last week that somehow snuck past us.

Sammut eyes Delaware double trackside
Wed, July 29, 2009
Winning the 'Tammy 10-Thousand Dollars' would pay tribute to Harvey Lennox and pay a few bills, too

By JIM CRESSMAN

Mark Sammut would like nothing better than to pay tribute to Harvey Lennox by collecting the "Tammy 10-Thousand Dollars" prize that awaits anyone who wins both ends of the International SuperModified Association doubleheader Aug. 7-8 at Delaware Speedway.

"That would be excellent, wouldn't it? It sure would pay a few bills," said Sammut, who incurred some unexpected costs this past weekend at Sandusky, Ohio -- front-end damage on Friday night, then the rear end letting go on lap 12 of Saturday's 100-lapper.

The Londoner had won his first feature in his 12 years in ISMA on July 12 at Cayuga and was hoping he could carry that setup through Sandusky and into Delaware. "Hopefully we can get the combination right for Delaware," he said.

The super modifieds will run heat races and a 30-lap feature Aug. 7, then more heats and a a 50-lap feature Aug. 8. Both programs begin at 8 p.m.

ISMA's arrival is one of the most highly anticipated events of the season and this is the fourth year in a row the series has graced the Delaware half-mile after a previous 20-year absence. These groundshaking 850-horsepower cars are the most powerful cars to visit the track each year.

The "Tammy 10-Thousand Dollars" (put up by Corr/Pak Merchandising) is named after the legendary Tammy 10, piloted by Londoner Harvey Lennox during the super modifieds' heydays at Delaware. Sammut's father Tony, owner of Murray's Transmission, worked on Lennox's follow-up car, the London Concrete Machinery No. 10, and the families have stayed friends.

Lennox, now 79 and inducted into the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1998, will be at Delaware for the ISMA show. He drove Tammy 10 from 1960 to '66, winning 101 feature races.

Sammut hopes the purse is extra incentive for the U.S.-based teams to make the trip after only 15 were at Cayuga.

"This should lure a few of the boys. The race at Cayuga was a day after the big race at Oswego and a few guys are still afraid of this passport issue, but hopefully we got them straightened out on that this past weekend."

Sammut said the drivers like the two-day events and it's also ideal for fans who travel to follow the series.

"The ones from out-of-town can camp (for free at the track) for the weekend, instead of getting up in the morning to carry on to the next track."

The ISMA cars will be joined that weekend by Delaware's NASCAR Whelen All-American Series classes. Late models and trucks race Aug. 7, with super stocks and modifieds Aug. 8.
