We ran a Glide with a direct coupler in our OWM back in the day. Without the mass of the flywheel and clutch to spin up it would jump up out of the corners with any stick car. If you can keep them cool they work quite well.

How many of the super streets are manual transmissions?does anyone run the automatic at all??

I'll be running a Powerglide this season.  Having the option of the Direct Drive Coupler means I'd only be losing a few horsepower to the manual guys, as opposed to a bunch, and have that instant punch off the corner like a stick too.  I would hope that rule change means you'll see more Automatics around, because finding those 3 speeds is getting harder and harder, and none of the restoration and musclecar guys want to give up 4 speeds...  :-[

Just wondering, why you think, you would lose any at all.My understanding with automatic's is,the slippage within the torque converter puts you at a lost, without the converter, there's no slippage at all.

Well an automatic is a hydraulicly actuated transmission which requires a pump to make it operate. The pump is what engages the gear you want. Since the oil only has to shift the transmission and lubricate it you have a pump spining say 6000 rpm. The pump has internal leakage and so does all the valves, that leakage is a loss of hp beacuse it is converted to heat energy. I've hear numbers of around 15-20 hp. They are not nearly as bullet proof as we'd like to believe and they do require freshening up every now and again. I guess it's a matter of preference, I just happen to prefer the good old 3 speed standard
