That's the one! So anyone know anything about this guy or what he was there for? I watched him for a while and the speed in the straights was pretty amazing, but he seemed to have a hard time cornering.

all i know is that he used to run endurance, can't remember which car number tho.

Sheridan having best Delaware year
Sat, August 16, 2008

By JIM CRESSMAN

DELAWARE -- Rocket Ron Sheridan is enjoying his best season at Delaware Speedway.

Unfortunately, he picked a year seven-time Delaware late model champion Steve Robblee chose to return after a two-year absence.

"We're going to have to get awful lucky and he's going to have to have some back luck, but we don't wish that on anybody," Sheridan said last night as he remained second to Robblee in the points chase after they finished 11th and 12th respectively in the 35-lap feature, won by Dion Verhoeven of Kerwood.

Sheridan and Robblee were running near the front when both spun late in the race.

"The left front tire was going down about lap 10 and it just went flat at the end," Sheridan said of his spinout, which forced Robblee to spin to avoid a wreck.

Sheridan has one more go at it this season -- the APC 300 on Aug. 31, during the three-day Great Canadian Race Weekend.

It's Sheridan's 11th year in a late model and he's never won the track championship.

"I think we finished second to Steve in the points championship about seven years ago, so one more isn't going to kill me," he said. "To be quite honest with you I'm glad he came back. because if I'm going to win, that means you've done a good job and you've beaten one of the best, for sure.

"And Steve back here raises the bar. I think the racing has gotten better and there's more respect on the track. Maybe we're just getting older and we don't want to have to fix the cars."

Sheridan, 44, grew up in Scarborough and when he was nine his father took him to Pinecrest Speedway.

"I wanted to do it from that time on. Dad did a little bit of street stock for a year or two, but single income, four kids, he couldn't do it very long."

The family moved to Alvinston when he was in Grade 5 and Sheridan was attracted to Delaware. But he didn't start racing in street stock until he was 29. He moved up to late model in 1998 and won rookie of the year.

It used to be a family affair at the track for Sheridan, who recently moved to Mt. Brydges from Strathroy. His brother Ken, a firefighter, was head of the safety crew until taking a job in Simcoe two years ago.

"I always liked it when he was here because he could save your life," Ron said. "I was hoping if there were two of us in accident he would look after me first, as long as I didn't make him mad that week.

"Ken was here a few weeks ago when I crashed into the wall and I didn't know he was coming and he yelled at me from the fence to see if I was OK."

While Sheridan is enjoying his fine season, it's been a great rookie year for Jesse Pontello of St. Catharines. Pontello, 19, is 11th in the points.

"I ended up here because it's one of the biggest tracks in Ontario (a half-mile) and it's one of the best tracks, too," he said.

"You've got the top 10 best drivers in Ontario racing here. You even hear about this track and these guys in the southern United States."

Pontello is used to the long haul to race. He used to do it every Wednesday night for two years when he competed in the Junior Racing League.

"It's how we started on asphalt because growing up in St. Catharines, we've got Merrittville Speedway (in Thorold, which is clay)," Pontello said of the track that shares the honour with Delaware as being the oldest tracks in Canada with 57 years of continuous operation.

"It was a bit of a drive, but it's just like Fridays, it's worth it," he said. "It's an awesome experience. So far the car's stayed in one piece and I haven't even had to replace the front bumper."

Tom Zagorodny of Dorchester won the 25-lap truck feature.

Jim Mairs of London won the 25-lap super stock feature.
