Steve: a perfect argument for the no kids in the pits topic, right? ML
Thanks for the updates sounded like a good night of racing.
ShortTrackFan asked "Where was the track security?" I have never seen security at Flammy. That would cost money and John wouldn't spend any more money then he would have to.
I remember when John used to hire off duty uniformed police for security and then paid for the police to do traffic control at Brock Road and the 5th Concession once the races ended. (the 5th Conc. would become 2 lanes eastbound over to Brock Rd.) The police officers occasionally would actually ticket fans caught drinking in the stands. Of course, this was in the days when the track was drawing 3-4,000 fans weekly. Perhaps the changes in the Hamilton region police forces over the years due to amalgamations has meant there isn't enough manpower for part time security work.
As some of you know by my previous posts, I've never been a big fan of tracks whose idea of security is providing some of the owner's friends with T shirts with the word security printed on them. They generate no respect. Conversely, at Holland and Lancaster, they use armed uniformed security guys. Now that generates respect.
just out of curiosity? how old is Jonathan Urlin? I was picturing a young kid, but when I read the story of him climbing the stand to berate the starter....he cant be all that young....
What I was amused by was how Jonathon Urlin who had been caught up in a wreck (this was after being forced to start last instead of in the top 6 when he apparently was late for the feature line-up) was allowed to climb up the starter's stand from the grandstand side no less and verbally berate the starter as he waved the green flag for a restart.
Crap...I totally missed that. Thats what happens when you switch from Grandsatnd to pitside in the middle of a race. 🙁
