Most diesels would do the job.
I just went threw the same search last week for my 1100km a week commute. I ended up with a Cavalier 2.2L, 5 speed. Cheap and plentifull lots to choose from, cheap to maintain and repair and around 28-29 mpg on the highway.
The only draw back is in my driveway there is a 4x4 with big ol' mud tires, a chopped and slammed '51 ford kustom, a dodge magnum, and I have to drive a purple cavalier all week!
