Jamie Cox Records another Top-Five at Delaware Speedway
(Dorchester, ON) – Jamie Cox and his RCR Racing Team were back in action last Friday night, June 10th for a regular 35-lap feature at Delaware Speedway in their London City Chrysler / CANUSA / Total Lubricants / Stubbs Communications Dodge Charger FT Garage NASCAR Late Model. The event was ‘Ladies Night’ at the speedway, and kicked off a tremendous two-day card with Late Models as the highlight on Saturday, and the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series highlighting Saturday’s events.
The night started off with practice, and Cox spoke about those ‘hot lap’ sessions, “Our car was decent, but everyone else was loose. We were fast with our old tires on.”
Jamie accepted the green for his heat race from the inside of the third row, and blitzed up the inside to third position in the early going. Shawn Thompson and Jay Doerr were in front of the #22 heading into the last lap when they made contact racing for the lead. Cox avoided Doerr who was out of shape, and came home second to Thompson at the end of the qualifier. “It was a good run, and a good finish. When we put on new tires, it changed the stagger of the car, so we made a few small adjustments, and it wasn’t the thing to do.”
With his solid finish in his qualifier Cox earned a starting position alongside Thompson on the front row for the feature. He started strong on the outside, capturing the lead early, but he couldn’t hold off Doerr, who fought his way past for the top spot, as Cox fell into line second. Point leader Andrew Gresel made his way to third, and started to hound Jamie. Cox couldn’t hold off Gresel who shuffled Jamie into the outside line. A steady stream of cars went past on the bottom and Jamie found himself back in eighth position by the time he found a gap in line. He would rally during the final stretch of the race for a fifth-place finish. He spoke about the run, “Our car isn’t really good on the first few laps, but after we get some laps in, the car comes to life. Right at the start when the #43 [Doerr] got past me, he pulled away, but as the laps wore on, I was able to reel him in. Everything was going fine at that point until Gresel got
me, and I was shuffled back to seventh or eighth. After that I was just trying to get all I could get after that. It was still another solid run for us, but we have a little more work to do on the car.”
Gresel was able to pass Doerr on lap 22 to take the lead, as he expanded his championship advantage and recorded his third feature victory of the season in just five starts.
1. Gresel, 2. Doerr, 3. Matt Robblee, 4. Shawn Thompson, 5. Jamie Cox.
The RCR Racing Team will be off until Friday July 1st when they take to Delaware Speedway for the Maple City Tire 100 in a Canada Day celebration.
