(Delaware, ON) The world’s most powerful short track will soon be arriving in the London-area for this weekend’s ISMA Super Modified Event.  The race brings out the fastest cars that run at Delaware Speedway each season as well as spectacular local racing over the two days.  The weekend also features Johnny Benson Jr, 2008 NASCAR Truck Series Champion running in the ISMA event.  The events run on Friday night at 8:00 pm and on Saturday at 7:00 pm.

If there ever was a short track car built for speed, it’s a Super Modified.  Easily visible by their distinctive wings (which move depending on whether the car is cornering or on a straightaway) and aerodynamic package, their engines pound out over 700 horsepower.  Combine that with an ultra light 1850 lb weight and gigantic tires for added grip.  Add it all together and you have a recipe for extreme speed.

Delaware Speedway is a track built for Super Modified racing, expanded in the 1970’s to the current half-mile configuration in order to accommodate these powerful cars and their fearless drivers.  The majority of the ISMA drivers are from the United States, however there are a number of Canadian’s to watch out for including London’s own Mark Sammut (#78) and Mike Lichty (#84) of Innerkip.  Sammut has three ISMA wins to his credit, but only one win in Canada and not at his home track of Delaware.  Lichty enters the weekend sitting third in overall points for the series.

Lichty’s team will be fielding a second car in the race which is scheduled to be driven by Johnny Benson Jr. (#74) of Cornelius, NC.  Benson is known to race fans as the 2008 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Champion, and 1995 Nationwide Series champion.

Along with the Super Modifieds, fans will be treated to great local racing from the speedway’s FT Garage Late Models, Coca-Cola Super Stocks, and Demar Aggregates Trucks.  The FT Garage Late Models are locked in one of the hottest points battles in recent memory.  The top five drivers are all within a ten-point striking distance of defending champion Andrew Gresel (#81) of Hepworth.  His closest challenger is just five points back, Mark Watson (#3) of St. Thomas.  Watson found his way up to the second spot after the APC Summer Showdown, an event in which Gresel and his top points rival, Kirk Hooker (#38) of Chatham both struggled.

The weekend will also feature the OSCAAR Open-Wheel Modifieds.  With strong participation expected from the provincial travelling series, it has become more and more apparent that these are not the modifieds that ran weekly at Delaware Speedway in years past.  Bolstered by an updated rules package and bigger tires, when Barry Newman (#1) of Springfield tested in a Late Model practice earlier this year he was top of the charts.

Tickets for the event are available through the track website (www.delawarespeedway.com) or at the gate the day of the event.  The track has made special family value passes available for the event, and is also offering strong weekend pass discounts.  Camping for the weekend is available on a first-come-first-served basis behind the back stretch for $20 for the weekend.

Delaware Speedway is a half-mile paved oval stock-car track located minutes from London, Ontario, Canada. Since 1952, Delaware Speedway has been the home to some of the best stock car racing in Canada. Its unique, natural, amphitheatre-like setting allows a family or group of friends to enjoy exciting, comfortable and affordable evening or afternoon of action at the track.
