Delaware Speedway is set to bring the 2013 season to a smashing conclusion this Saturday, October 19 at 1:00 pm with the running of the third annual Pumpkin Smasher.  The rain-or-shine afternoon features fun for everyone with a variety of stock-car racing events as well as a Demolition Derby to finish up the day.  In addition, the afternoon also features special programs including the “A Can is a Coupon” food drive, the smashing of the pumpkins for Jesse’s Journey, and the final High School Challenge of the season.

A CAN IS A COUPON: For spectators arriving the day of the race, a can becomes their coupon for cheap admission.  Spectators who bring a canned food good for the food bank will be given cheap $10 general admission passes.  Kids age 6-16 are just $5 and kids age five and under are free of charge.  The canned goods are being collected with the help of Whitworth Towing to donate to the food bank.

THE HIGH SCHOOL CHALLENGE RETURNS: The day also features the highly anticipated debut of five new High School Challenge vehicles prepared over the last month by students from Regina Mundi Catholic Secondary School, Westminster Secondary School, Wheable, North Middlesex Secondary School (Parkhill), and Thames Secondary School.  The vehicles are being driven in the Bone Stock Chaos Car 75-lap championship race by local celebrities and Delaware weekly division drivers.  Included in the roster to represent the schools is Scott Tucker of Virgin Radio 97.5, newly crowned FT Garage Late Model Champion Jamie Cox of Dorchester, Kathleen Hosang of Delaware’s Super Stock class, Darrell Timmermans representing speedway staff, and recently crowned two-time truck series champion Gary Adriaensen.  Thames Secondary school was the winner of the first High School challenge held earlier this season.

SMASHING PUMPKINS FOR JESSE’S JOURNEY: What would an event like the Pumpkin Smasher be without smashing a few Pumpkins?  The annual smashing of the pumpkins will take place just before the Bone Stock Chaos Car 75-lap championship race.  For a donation to Jesse’s Journey, kids can get their own pumpkin to splatter on the front stretch before the final race begins.  There will also be a giant pumpkin placed in the middle of the Demolition Derby arena before the final destruction gets underway.

A STRONG ROSTER: Speedway staff are projecting the largest Pumpkin Smasher event ever.  Pre-registration for all events has been exceptionally high this year.  The track has posted a list of probable entries to the track website.

OTHER NOTES IN THE NOTEBOOK:

- The racing lineup on the day features an Open-Ontario Four Cylinder Event, GAW Recycling Enduro Dash, Bone Stock Chaos Car 75, and Demolition Derby.  Spectator gates open at noon with racing beginning at 1:00 pm.

-Before the event there will also be a classic car cruise.  More information on the classic car cruise is available by calling the speedway office.

- It runs in the family: Jay Doerr (#43) of London, known for racing in the top-tier FT Garage Late Model division, will take a step into Bone Stock racing this weekend.  The event is special for Jay: he will be racing in the same event as his son, Dylan, as he runs his first laps at Delaware.

- Last year’s event featured pouring rain for much of the day.  The Open-Ontario race was run in the downpour as well as the GAW Recycling Enduro event.

-Jamie Klumper (#07) of Mitchell won his first ever Enduro competition at the Pumpkin Smasher last year.  Reluctant at first to run in the rain, the track conditions proved to be to his advantage!

- Derek Moesker (#51) of Beachville is undefeated: he has won every Pumpkin Smasher event ever held for the Bone Stock Chaos Cars.

- The Bone Stock Chaos Car 75 is widely expected to break a participation record on Saturday.  The most Bone Stocks ever in an event was at the most recent race on September 28 where 37 drivers participated at once.  The track’s goal is to see 100 drivers in competition within the next two seasons.
