I think we should have a online chat night on CRO. We have a Delaware Speedway chatroom.
Let me know and we can set a date and advertise it on here.
I was a BIG fan of the Chaos Cars idea. I think it is exactly what the track needed
I only ever saw the Chaos Cars perform once, as part of the Labour Day 200 Late Model show a few years ago, but I thought they were awesome. The obstacle course style setup was great, and the cars had sweet names like the Red Baron, the Chuck Norris, and the Snotrod.
I am tickled pink to hear that the Chaos Cars were a hit with the fans. At the time, all I ever heard was negativity from other divisions at the track. But now that they have evolved into something larger and stronger, I've heard the name "Chaos Cars" being brought up more and more, with people asking where has the series gone.
Maybe there is a future with a rehashed version of the barrel spinning manics. I for one would like to see that 🙂

I think there would definitely be a future.
My thinking on this goes all the way back to when I was really little. You guys all know I'm a race fan. Nothing I like better than fast cars, a good, hard fought race, and a minimum of caution flags. I was never even a huge fan of enduro, even in the enduro heyday, just because it seemed to play to the baser nature of the race fan. And after spending literally my whole life at the track, all that crash and bash never really impressed me all that much...I was a Supermodified kind of guy.
However I can't escape the idea that when I think back to when I was really little, its the novelty stuff that sticks out in my mind. Hoppy the Clown in his little yellow clown car (and Sandy Harrisson's annoyed sounding commentary on Hoppy's actions) Gary Beck lighting up the frontstretch in his dragster, a demolition derby football game, backwards races, figure 8s at Nilestown, Koko the Klown getting dragged on his ass behind a moving pickup truck and going through a ring of fire with the Hell Drivers....that kind of thing. It was all good fun. Even Sandy Harrison's patter of talking to the drivers as they're on the track was very unpretentious. (Ron Pearn goes spinning in turn 1, and Sandy says "hey Peaches...you've got it pointing the wrong way, boy.")
These guys are looking right now at the program, trying to figure out if something is missing, and trying to figure out how to turn new fans on. My honest answer is the above type of events.
I've been thinking since the meeting last week. One of the questions that got asked was "have we become too predictable?" I didn't want to say yes, because as a race fan, the show is pretty good. You really don't know who's going to win on a given night. But the craziness and good humor of the old time stock car races is gone. And oddly enough, the older I get, the more I miss that.
also if the track is to big for a weekly mini stick division it must be to big for bone stocks to right !!!!
Don, I feel that Delaware is too big for a competitive Mini-stock class because it would be like watching Nascar Sprint Cup cars race around Talladega, but in single file. The only reason why the 4cyl invitationals work is because you get cars from all walks of life showing up. It would be difficult to entice guys from other tracks to run their Dirt Mods or Mustangs at Delaware on a regular basis. That's why the invitational races work, because it's only a couple times a year.
Mini-stocks succeed at "EVERY other track in Ontario" because they are smaller tracks. Put small cars on a small track and it doesn't seem so disproportionate - the action is more condensed. The reason why a division like the bonestocks will succeed is because it's run as a cheap, entry-level Enduro format. Get 40-80 cars all running together and you've got yourself a show.
But if you think a Mini-stock class will work, than prove me wrong. I don't want to be negative towards a possible new division, but sometimes we have to be realistic.
I feel you are wrong on this, and here's a few reasons. One stating track is too big is incorrect. Oshweken is not that much smaller than Delly. It is a big 3/8's mile, and Delly is a small 1/2 mile. They are closer than you think in size. Secondly, there are loads of guys wanting to race Friday nights, and cannot afford the three divisions now. I would in a heartbeat, if there was an entry level cost-effective class weekly. Before crates, and Hoosiers, truck division was PACKED when they were three grand to build. Then it was lost to magical ways of "preserving it" and it lost that cost factor (somehow this went backwards).
Trucks were 23-25 second racing when they were on radials, if I remember correctly. And Truck class was the best Friday night show for two years. The average Bone Stocks, are 24-28 seconds, so where's the big whoop? If the Mini Stocks were cambered, and rules kept clean, you would get guys back quickly. Keep the rules simple, and DO NOT CHANGE THEM. Learn from previous mistakes.
Just my opinion of course, but there ARE 4 cyl classes running 1/2 mile tracks in the states, both dirt and asphalt, with good success. The key to not having strung out fields is rule management, which is relatively easy for 4cyls... And if you end up with the opposite, which is all of the cars bunched together lap after lap... I'm sorry but I'm failing to see the problem there. Sounds like an exciting way to distract from the fact they're only doing 60-70 mph? 😀
