Delaware, ON – The 2013 Race season kicked off with an exciting program sponsored by Whitworth Towing, including Bone Stock Chaos Cars and a 150-lap GAW Recycling Enduro Feature. For the first time ever the Enduro feature was a “race within a race” with the introduction of an A-class and B-class which compete together but are scored separately.
The day began with a ten-lap ladies’ Bone Stock race, the first seven of which was led by Kim Schindel (#22). Schnidel was passed by Michelle Lowes (#48) in the eighth lap. Schnidel, however kept a steady pace and was able to finish in second. Ann Aylott (#74) passed Lowes in the ninth lap and finished in first place. Aylott’s victory is especially notable as the race was her first-ever start. Nervous on pit road before the event, Aylott elected to take a pass on her designated starting position and instead start from the back. Tiffan Hoffman (#92) finished third. The race was paused just past halfway for a single-vehicle crash involving Stacey Stunden (#92). Stunden had been chasing down the lead before spinning in turn one before she resumed the race only to experience more troubles and crash in turn four ending her day.
The first GAW Recycling Enduro Heat featured the B division cars. The first fifteen laps were led by Justin Mesenberg (#810) of Highgate who was passed by Kris Fairweather (#6) of Parkhill on lap 16 of the 25-lap heat. Fairweather ultimately placed first in the race. Jordan Morris (#73) placed second and Stan Cook (#74) of St. Thomas finished third. The race featured an especially fierce battle between Fairweather, Morris, Cook, and Mezenberg who at one point raced four-wide down the front stretch for the lead.
The second heat was designated for the A division cars. Steve Book (#64) led the majority of the heat passing Barry Watson (#45) of West Lorne in lap two and finishing in first. Derek McCullough (#38) finished second and Watson finished in third. The heat race featured a single caution when Piet Blaauboerr (#777) of Strathroy hit the outside wall on the front stretch. Blaauboerr was able to rejoin later in the afternoon for the feature race.
The Bone Stock Chaos Cars delivered on their name providing the most chaotic race of the afternoon. Derek Moesker (#51) of Beachville was able to take the win over defending champion Jordan Morris (#73) of London. Moesker drew a strong starting position starting on the outside of the first row with Morris two rows back on the inside. Morris managed to snatch the lead for Moesker on lap four. Moesker would regain the lead later on lap 22 of the 35-lap race as Morris struggled with his vehicles left rear tire losing air. Struggles, however, were also taking place behind the wheel of Moesker’s #51 which was experiencing a power steering failure. Morris made one last attempt to regain the lead in the final corner on the last lap around two parked vehicles but was unable to complete the pass. Moesker took the victory, Morris finished season, Kyle Neumeister (#92) of Strathroy finished third. The event highlighted the fast-growing Bone Stocks with nearly half the drivers running in their first-ever race.
Next up was the 150-lap main event featuring the race within a race between the A & B-class of Enduro. Barry Watson (#45) of West Lorne won the event in the A-Class. Steve Book (#64) of Brantford led the race from lap five and would dominate the event until withdrawing at lap 105 with his vehicle overheating from breaking a cooling fan belt. With Book out of the picture Steve Arrand (#37) of Ailsa Craig inherited the lead and appeared to have the race won but would lose it to Watson on lap 126. Turned out Arrand’s vehicle had a broken shock absorber which caused him to slow in the late goings of the race allowing Watson to take the lead and the win. Jamie Klumper (#07) of Mitchell would finish in second, Arrand would finish third.
Celebrating 25 years of Enduro competition, the always animated Rumble Racing managed to get both of their entries into the top three for the B-Division with Tony Rumble (#06) of Blenheim winning the class and Dave Rumble (#114) finishing third. Kris Fairweather (#6) of London finished second in the class.
The next race event at Delaware Speedway is opening night featuring the track’s weekly divisions. The event marks the first night in the chase for the track’s 2013 weekly division championships. Spectator gates open at 6:00 and racing starts at 7:30 pm.
