TRIAL BY FIRE: THOMPSON TAKES THE CHECKERS
August 9, 2013
Delaware Speedway PR
Race fans finally had some great weather to enjoy local stock car competition Friday night at Delaware Speedway after a rainout the previous week. Gary Adriaensen (#55) of Belmont took his sixth win of the year in the Trucks & V8 Stocks race. Matt Robblee (#51) of Dorchester finished first in the Super Stocks feature. Shawn Thompson (#72) of Parkhill also won the FT Garage Late Models feature, a welcome success following a recent shop fire. The night finished off with an all Trucks and Mini-Van King of the Hill Spectator’s Race in support of Jesse’s Journey.
“Trial by Fire” Shawn Thompson (#72) of Parkhill won the 40-lap FT Garage Late Model feature race two weeks after his shop burned down nearly taking his race vehicle with it. Phillip Nyssen (#51) of Brantford led the first eight laps until he was passed by Justin Demelo (#82). Nyssen crashed moments later on the front stretch bringing out the first caution of the race and eventual red flag. Nyssen was shaken after the hard crash but okay. Demelo led the race until lap nineteen, when Jamie Cox (#22) made the pass for first. With Cox out front Thompson closed in and made a major move to try to take the lead from Cox on lap 28 giving a bit of bump and run attempted that Cox managed to fight off. In a thrilling duel with Cox, Thompson did not take the lead until two laps to go to head to victory lane. Cox finished second, Justin Demelo (#82) of London finished third.
Matt Robblee (#51) of Dorchester finished first in the Coca-Cola 35-lap feature. Tim McGregor (#48) of St. Thomas led the first two laps but his lead was short lived. Robblee took control of the track in lap three and held the lead for the rest of the feature despite the attempts of several other racers to pass him. The race had two cautions, one involving championship contender Jeff Showler (#44) of Mt. Elgin who spun in turn one near the front of the pack on a restart as he battled for a position. Brandon Verhoeven (#7) of Kerwood placed second, a best ever finish for the rookie driver. Previous event winner Shae Gemmell (#3) of Dorchester placed third.
Gary Adriaensen (#55) of Belmont took his sixth win of the season in the 25-lap Demar Aggregates Trucks and V8 Stocks feature. Trevor Collver (#51) of Lucan led the first lap of the feature but Brady Smith (#39) of Coldstream passed in lap two for the lead. Smith held his lead until lap sixteen when Adriaensen took first position and stayed out front to take the checkers. Smith placed second and Tom Zagorodny (#77) of London came third.
In the All-Truck King of the Hill Spectator’s Race “Hercules” the Domino’s Pizza Truck took home the victory. A mini-van thrilled fans, making it through to the final rounds before being eliminated by the eventual runner up. After “Hercules” took the win the track had a surprise for the winner who went up in a head-to-head race against the Demar Aggregates Truck feature race winner Gary Adriaensen (#55). Adriensen showed that Delaware’s trucks still hold top spot for speed.
The next race event at Delaware Speedway is the highly anticipated ISMA Super Modifieds sponsored by Oakridge Ford on Friday, August 16 at 8pm. The night will also feature Coca-Cola Super Stocks and the OSCAAR Open-Wheeled Modifieds heats. Racing will continue on Saturday, August 17 with the OSCAAR Open-Wheeled Modified Championship and GAW Recycling Enduro. For more information and ticket sales, visit www.delawarespeedway.com
