I always used to wonder about this as well, until it was explained to me. It's a bit of a technicality:
The term 'unofficial' applies to almost any document on the website (website documents can be edited and changed). Even when it comes to results on the website, they are termed "unofficial".
The "official" points system is kept on a computer (and backups) separate from the website. From time to time I get requests for this information which I then send off by e-mail.
The points technically become official at the banquet when a speedway official reads the final points and issues the trophy.

Same thing happens with published lottery numbers. They are never "official" until the check is cashed.
