Cox and RCR Racing Team Open Season with Solid Sixth-Place Finish

(Dorchester, ON) – Jamie Cox and his Stubbs Communications / London City Chrysler / CANUSA / Total Lubricants Dodge Charger NASCAR Late Model took to Delaware Speedway Friday, May sixth for the 60th season opener at the historical ½-mile track.  For team owners Cox, and Luke Ramsay it would be the first event of their new partnership as team co-owners of their #22 Late Model.

The night was delayed as the skies opened before practice could begin, but after drying the track the team tried to get some practice in before the first competitive laps of the season, only to experience troubles throughout hot laps.  Jamie explained, “I was on the track, stepped on it, and the car got sideways.  I tried it again, and it kicked sideways again.  At first I thought it was because the track was still wet, but when we pulled it into the pits the crew found that the axle was broken.”

The crew fixed the problem and the first green flag was delayed by about 35 minutes, before the #22 hit the track for the first time in heat race competition.  Cox started on the front row alongside Gord Shepherd, and showed his strength right off the bat as he worked the outside lane and swept into the lead.  Cox continued to run strong laps, and pulled into victory lane with a heat race win in the first night out for the team.  Cox explained, “That was a good way for the team to start.  We didn’t get any practice because of the axle, and went out on sticker tires, but I was able to get him on the outside.”

The night closed with the FT Garage Late Model event, the feature show, and Cox took the green from fifth position.  He fell into line in fifth-place behind Scott Lindsay as the field put a number of laps on the scoreboard, until the races first yellow flag on lap 13.  Jamie would restart on the outside and this time he rallied while racing Lindsay, the five-time track champion.  The pair duelled for a number of laps with Lindsay down low and Jamie on the outside, but on lap 19 Cox lost the battle, and slid back to sixth before the caution flew.  As the cars circled under yellow, the skies opened again, and speedway officials cut the event 15 laps short as it was evident that the rain wasn’t going to stop.  Jamie spoke about the finish, “I started to see the drops get a lot bigger on the windshield and I was the only one in the outside lane.  That’s when I lost those spots.  Right after that, they called the race.  It was still a decent run for the
first time out, and to win a heat race, and finish sixth after the start we had to the night, we’re pleased with that.”

Andrew Gresel started on the pole and led every lap, claiming his third career feature win at Delaware over Jesse Kennedy.  Jay Doerr rounded out the podium.

1. Gresel, 2. Kennedy, 3. Doerr, 4. Lindsay, 5. Mat Box, 6. Jamie Cox.
As of Friday night the team was unsure about their participation on Friday May 13th, but will be in action for sure on May 21st at Delaware Speedway for ‘The Great Canadian 200’.  The historic event has been moved from Labour Day to Victoria Day Weekend this year, and is a tremendous way to swing into the racing season for the summer.

Looked like Jamie thought he was still driving the mod as he was making his trademark outside line work for quite a few laps last friday.
