This one is a beauty:

To the mayor and councillors:
c.c. CARS

Good Afternoon,

After living in Toronto for 8 years, I moved to Fort Erie for a better quality of life. "Better" includes friendlier, less hectic, less noise and air pollution, and so on.

I truly believe that the speedway will diminish the quality of life in and around the town.

One of the realities of having a speedway is the influx of people who will also be partying. Partying entails drinking to excess. Being drunk, no matter the location or reason, always leads to a spike in Criminal Code and provincial offences. I am quite certain that, if the police were asked for statistics, they would concur with the above. I am also certain that, due to pride and policy, they would also say that they are equipped to handle any such spike. Whether equipped or not, that does not negate the fact that there will be more indictable and summary offences committed as a result of a party atmosphere.

I foresee Garrison Road becoming like Toronto's Yonge Street with its 24/7 heavy traffic, thus causing considerable noise and air pollution.

As no doubt stated by others, real estate values will decline and currently protected fragile lands will disappear.

Last, and certainly not least, the investment consortium is funded by its major investor, Bayt Al Mal Investments. Its website is located at http://www.baminv.com/eng/ar.htm. I wish to draw your attention to the news updates that appear on its home page. They refer to projects in Saudi Arabia. The following can be seen on every page of Bayt Al Mal's site: SHARI'AH vision our INVESTMENT strategy (emphasis theirs); therefore, the investments in Saudi Arabia are consistent with Shari'ah.

The dominant form of Islam practised in Saudi Arabia is Wahhabism.

Wahhabism is the most austere form of Islam, and its day-to-day application is antithetical to the values of Western society and democracy.

By openly announcing on its site that it has invested in Saudi Arabia, Bayt Al Mal is therefore agreeing that Wahhabism is consistent with Shari'ah. To further prove my point that investments must be Shari'ah-consistent, Bayt Al Mal has a Shari'ah Board, which can be found at http://www.baminv.com/eng/shariah.htm.

If the speedway is approved, millions of dollars in profit will flow to Bayt Al Mal, which, in turn, will be in a position to make more significant investments in anti-democratic countries, as long as the investments are consistent with Shari'ah.

On an individual level, every dollar spent by a visitor to the racetrack has the potential of eventually funding such investments.

Lenin is famous for the comment, "useful idiots of the West". In the case of Bayt al Mal, it should be "naive fools of the West".

Are the Town and Region so naive and desperate that they are willing to associate themselves with a corporation that funds projects in countries whose values are in direct opposition to those on which our society is based?

This is not a matter of cultural relativism; as a Canadian, I am very proud to live in a multicultural society.

Our society covers the spectrum of very conservative to very liberal, and all are made possible by the value of tolerance.

Wahhabism does not include tolerance. I would like you to spend a few hours Googling Wahhabism and reading the search results.

After doing so, please ask yourself this question: Would I want my daughter or niece living in Saudi Arabia?

Then vote your conscience.

M. M.

That's like saying I have a friend who knows a guy who is a great artist, therefore I'm a good artist. Are these people serious?
