Who really cares what number Dale Jr runs? Earnhardt Sr., if you recall was number 3, 15, 2 and 8 in his career in Nascar. He actually started using the number 3 because it was Richard Childress' number when he got out of the car for Dale. Most drivers associated with a number were some other number at some point in their career. Rusty Wallace was #27 for many years, he was in '89 when he won the cup, but everyone remembers him as #2. I think that out of the modern era, King Richard and Jeff Gordon may be the only ones who will run one number for their whole career, but that may change. They talked about retiring Richard's number, but he was the one to bring it back. If they were to retire anyone's number, Richard's #43 should be first, then the #3 in my opinion. Even Mark Donohue, who is one of the most underrated drivers of all time IMHO, ran the 6 (Trans Am and Can Am), 16 (Nascar), 66 (Indy) 9, 10, 12 and 28. He will always be remembered as the #6, and it predominantly was the number found on his cars.

The reality is that today that number is worth a lot of money, and hat's off to Robert Yates for giving up his number to Hendrick Motorsports for Dale to use...
