One of Brighton Speedway's biggest events is upon us with the annual Ultramar Labour Day Classic Weekend presented by Lucas Oil, Rock 107 and Mystical Distributing set to roll on September 5 & 6. The Southern Ontario Sprints rumble in to town with two full points events on the weekend. All of Brighton Speedway's five weekly divisions will be in action throughout the two-day event.
Fans can enjoy free entertainment and fun activities for the whole family during the tailgate party on Sunday, September 6. Drivers will participate in a variety of activities including the dunk tank, pit stop challenge and more along with music provided by Scotty Lalonda and Déjà Vu Entertainment. Both kids and adults can enjoy the obstacle course and bouncy castle. The concession stand will be open early for lunch. The arty starts at 1:00pm and runs until 3:00 pm
Brown Controls SOS Fate
Brantford's Mitch Brown leads the current Southern Ontario Sprints point standings with a 44-point advantage over Ohsweken's Glenn Styres. Brown has been impressively consistent this year, notching two wins to Styres four, and has not finished worse than third in eight races this season.
Brown's most recent win with the SOS came at South Buxton Raceway in July after winning the series opener at Brighton on May 16. Styres has won twice at Brighton this season on June 20 and July 11 and also earned the 50th Sprint Car win of his career when the SOS were last in action on August 9 at Humberstone Speedway. Cory Turner was the last winner at Brighton, on August 8, his first career win. Picton's Chris Jones remains in contention, 170 points off Brown's pace while occupying third.
The SOS drivers will have the option Sunday to take the wing off for a wingless sprint car dash at the conclusion of the points races.
Late Models Go Topless
The Vanderlaan Building Products RUSH Pro Late Models will run their annual topless race as the drivers take off the roof on Sunday night only. Charlie Sandercock remains the current point leader after his third-place finish last week with eight Brighton wins to his credit. Sandercock will also race his Sprint Car with the SOS this weekend.
Phil Potts regained his winning stride last week, rattling off his second win of the season after ending his night two weeks ago upside down. Potts is third in the championship standings behind Sandercock and Picton's Corey Earl.
Earl may be a little lighter come race time next week after losing a bet with fellow drivers Phil Potts and Sandercock to have either his arms, chest, or legs waxed Sunday afternoon. The goal for the bet was to raise money for the driver's year end point fund. We're not sure why they volunteered either.
Modified Points Chase Heats Up
The point chase in the Bainer's OilGARD Canadian Modified division is tight following a busy week. The driver's face a double-header this weekend, with a regularly scheduled show on Saturday and show-up points available on Sunday. The "Bloomfield Bullet" Dan Ferguson remains the point leader with an 80-point advantage over Picton native Andrew Hennessy.
Doug O'Blenis claimed his third win of the season last Saturday night to climb within 250 points of the points lead with three races remaining. Curtis King and Josh Hennessy complete the current top-five. One double points night remains and could throw a wrench in to the championship chase over the final three weeks.
Ramsay Checking Out With Pro Stock Lead
Justin Ramsay's nine Brighton Automotive Pro Stock wins in 2015 have made him the clear favourite to earn his first division championship. Trenton native Doug Anderson remains 290 points back of the lead with four wins to his credit as well.
Wade Purchase, Jamie Marshall and Leslie Mowat complete the current top-five. On the strength of a second-place finish last week, Picton's Brian Cross clawed his way to sixth in the standings. Barring a string of DNFs from the top two drivers, the remainder of the field has been eliminated from championship contention.
Three Horse Comp 4 Race
Three drivers remain in contention for the track championship in the Bill's Johns Comp 4 division. Trenton's Shelby Mills is the current point leader with two wins this season. More impressively, however, Mills has not finished outside the top-five in 14 starts this season.
Brighton native Austin Reid is closest to Mills in the standings, 55 points back for the championship lead. He gained 10 points with a third-place finish in last week's 15-lap feature. Tyler French has earned seven wins this year and holds the current point lead. French has two DNFs that have hindered his effort to take over the lead. With three races left, any of the top three runners could take home the title.
Stingers Back For Final Race
The final race of the season for the Quinte Septic Stinger divisions takes place on Saturday night. Andy Fletcher leads the current Super Stinger standings with a slim 40-point advantage over Chris Lammle. Two-time defending champion Del MacGregor remains in contention, 85 points off the lead.
Megan Golden sits atop the Junior Stinger standings with a 150-point advantage over her sister Chantel Golden. Brant Leggett, Dawson Evans and Ken Evans complete the current top-five in the championship standings.
