Sandercock wins at Brighton

BELLEVILLE (May 11, 2015) – Charlie Sandercock got back to his winning ways with his first feature win of the 2015 season at Brighton Speedway on Saturday, May 9. Sandercock started from outside row three and quickly moved his way through the field.

Following a lap four restart, Sandercock went from fourth to second and began challenging David McDonald (No.97) for the race lead. After another restart on lap six, the two drivers raced wheel-to-wheel for five laps until Sandercock took over the point position on lap 11.

“We rolled off sixth tonight and just kind of picked out way through the field,’ Sandercock said. “We had 30 laps to get there, so we just kind of drove our race and did what we had to do.”

Sandercock fended off a trio of tough competitors that included Phil Potts (No.29), Corey Earl (No.11) and Steve Baldwin (No.5) in the second half of the race. A final restart with one lap to go gave Potts another chance at the lead as it erased Sandercock’s full straightaway lead. Sandercock was perfect on the restart to complete the victory.

“I basically just try to keep a clear head and not let any other driver get under my skin,” Sandercock said. “The bottom worked for us all night. We took the restart on the bottom and it worked out for us.”

The win came on the heels of a frustrating ninth-place finish on opening night at Brighton on May 2. The team made a number of changes before the win as it continues to learn the RUSH series’ new Bilstein Bandit sealed shock program.

“We had a little bit of a tough week last week. It was a follow the leader race track and we didn’t want to follow the leader anymore and we thought we’d try the top side, which wasn’t there last week,” Sandercock said.

The team has a busy week ahead with four races planned for four consecutive nights. The Victoria Day long weekend starts with a RUSH Late Model tour weekly race at Can-Am Speedway, where Sandercock won the track’s season opener on May 1.

From there, the team will head to Brighton on Saturday night before their first stop of the year at Humberstone Speedway near Port Colborne, Ont. on Sunday night for a RUSH Weekly Series race. It will also serve as a tune-up for the RUSH North Series tour race on July 19.

The weekend culminates with the first RUSH North Region tour race of the season on Monday, May 19 at Merritville Speedway (Thorold, Ont.) in a $2000-to-win main event.

The competition will be stiff for the No.57 team at all four events, but particularly for the RUSH tour event at Merrittville. Series mainstays Max Blair, Ryan Montgomery, and Dustin and John Waters are just a couple of drivers to watch.

“There’s a lot of guys that are tough competitors. It’s that step forward and challenge for yourself to race against those guys,” Sandercock explained.

It will be a tough weekend that will test the team’s endurance, but also likely to be rewarding.
