Rapid Rad and Star 93.3 Present Southern Ontario Sprints Return To Brighton This Saturday
By Clayton Johns
BRIGHTON (August 5, 2015) – The Southern Ontario Sprints return to Brighton Speedway Saturday, August 8 for their fourth visit of the season presented by Star 93.3 and Rapid Rad. The Bainer’s OilGARD Canadian Modifieds, Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks, Bill’s Johns Comp 4s and Quinte Septic Stingers are all on the schedule as well. The Vanderlaan Building Products RUSH Pro Late Models are off from points racing, but will be featured in a $500-to-win Dash For Cash.
Brown Leads SOS Back To Brighton
Brantford, Ont. wheelman Mitch Brown leads the Southern Ontario Sprints return to Brighton Speedway with a 58-point advantage over Ohsweken, Ont. native Glenn Styres. Brown won the series’ season opener at Brighton on May 16 and won at South Buxton Raceway to start July. He is also fresh off a win south of the border in Indiana. Styres, however, has won the last two races at Brighton on June 20 and July 11.
Chris Jones, the 2013 series champion hailing from Picton, Ont., has one victory on the season at South Buxton Raceway and is eager to get back to his winning ways at his home track. Jones took the time to hot lap his No.11J car last Saturday night in preparation for this week’s showdown.
Saturday’s event will be the SOS’ 93rd visit to Brighton. Joyceville, Ont. native and part-time tour runner Rick Wilson leads the all-time wins list at Brighton with 21 since 1997. Keith Dempster and Jamie Turner, who sit fourth and fifth in the point standings, respectively, will be eager to win for the first time this year.
Canadian Modified Field Chasing Ferguson
The Bainer’s OilGARD Canadian Modified field hopes August will be different than July. Except for Dan Ferguson. The Bloomfield, Ont. driver had a July to remember, earning two wins andtwo second-place finishes before starting August with another win. The No.11 team now holds a 100-point advantage in the championship standings over Andrew Hennessy.
Doug O’Blenis has regained the form that keeps the No.32 at the front after a stretch victory lane in three years. He has not visited the winner’s circle since June 20. Curtis King and Shawn Gregory complete the current top-five in the standings.
Pro Stock Battle Heating Up
Brighton Automotive Pro Stock point leader Justin Ramsay may have won seven features this year, but it’s becoming increasingly difficult to park in victory lane. Division sophomore Brandon Murrell won his first career feature last Saturday night in the July 25 make-up feature and has consistently finished in or around the top-five all season.
Doug Anderson appears to be on the upswing as well after a pair of top-three finishes last week. He is due for another victory in August after last winning on July 11. Wade Purchase and Jamie Marshall have each been knocking on the door of victory lane and should be in contention again this week. Saturday’s race also marks the final race of the Rona Trenton Triple Crown.
Comp 4 Logjam
The Logjam at the top of the Bill’s Johns Comp 4 standings means each feature will count until the end of the season. After Austin Reid won his first career race last Saturday, Shelby Mills’ point lead was reduced to just 60 markers. Despite a violent rollover last Saturday night, Tyler French remains in contention for the points championship, sitting tied for second with Reid. French hopes to be back in action this week with a different car. Emily Weedman and Adam Chapman currently complete the top-five.
Stingers Back In Action
The Quite Septic Stingers return to action this Saturday night after a couple of weeks on pause. Both the Super Stinger and Junior Stingers will be back on track. Two-time and defending champion Del MacGregor has a narrow 15-point lead in the Super Stinger class over Chris Lammle. Andy Fletcher, Arthur McCauley and Jorden Pickell complete the current top-five. Chantel Golden won the first ever Junior Stinger feature on July 18.
Late Model Dash For Cash
The Vanderlaan Building Products Pro Late Models have the night off from points racing, but several drivers will be in attendance in hopes of taking home an extra $500 payday in the Dash For Cash. Last season, Mark Rayner took the surplus coinage as he held off Phil Potts for 12 laps.
Tickets Please!
General Admission for Saturday’s event featuring the Southern Ontario Sprints presented by Rapid Rad and Star 93.3 is just $20. A Family Pass is just $55 and is valid for two adults and two children under the age of 16 and includes family-size popcorn. Seniors and Youths are $18.
Spectator gates will open at 5:00pm. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:00pm. The first green flag is set for 7:00pm.

Brighton Speedway drivers and track officials would like to offer their condolences to Canadian Modified competitor Mike Lucas and his family following the unfortunate passing of his mother last weekend. We hope Mike can rejoin us at the racetrack soon.
