McCracken and Kirby Rock and Roll!

June 6, 2010

The racing action is as hot as the weather at Brighton Speedway as June was kicked off with Dibbits Excavating presentation of fan appreciation night including a complete race program presenting the Bainer’s Radiators Canadian Modifieds, Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks, Bill’s John Comp 4’s and the Quinte Towing Stingers.  A late addition of a Vanderlaan Building Products Dash for Cash and the second ever Figure 8 race accented the race program with excitement!  The sun was beating down and the stands were packed as racing kicked off at 7pm sharp and the qualifiers went nonstop until intermission.

As intermission approached you could feel the excitement build in the hundreds of children in the stands that when the last qualifying flag flew fans flocked to the front straight gates in anticipation of getting on the track to meet their favorite driver.  Over 80 drivers brought their cars onto the front straight to meet and greet their fans with pictures, candies and other great gifts for the people that come out weekly to support their favorite pastime!

When the features came around  a field of 23 Bill’s Johns Comp 4 drivers took the green flag and it wasn’t long for last week’s winner the #01 Brandon Gregory to make his way from 15th starting position to the front before the half way mark of the race.  However hot on his heals was the 2009 Comp 4 Champion #12 Kyle Sopaz and #32 of Terry Hough.  For the second week in a row the race was brought to a stop under the red flag for a roll over, this week it was #33 Eldon McCracken who rolled off of turn two.  When the race resumed it was a battle between Sopaz and Gregory that came down to the line where Sopaz edged Gregory by two feet in front of starter Robin Edwards.

The second feature of the night saw Dan Ferguson of Bloomfield repeat as the winner in the Bainer’s Radiator Canadian Modified Feature.  Ferguson took the lead early and was not challenged as he mastered the slick track for the 25 lap main event.  Matt Vanderlinden of Trenton and Adam Naylor of Quinte West had their best showing of the season to date finishing second and third respectively.

The Quinte Towing Stingers were the third feature event of the night and provided many of their own excitement including the second rollover of the night by #08 Angie Kirby.  Kirby emerged unharmed and the #06 Steve Wells from Picton went on to win the 12 lap feature.  Wells was followed across the line by #41 Mike Fletcher and #04 Josh Read.

Although the Late Models had the night off, Joe Dibbits, sponsor of the night and of the #77 Late Model of Caley Weese is such a big fan of the new class that he generously put up some bonus cash for the Late Models on their night off in the form of a Dash for Cash.  The 12 lap Dash saw #29 Phil Potts hold off last weeks feature winner Andrew Hennessy for the win.  The two different drivers drove two different lines and every time it looked like Hennessy would reel Potts in, Potts would find a way to put the power to track in his Hutchinson Fuels #29 Chevrolet.

“The Big Smooth” Doug Anderson drove his #72 Camaro from the 15th starting spot to victory once again in the Larry’s Towing Triple Crown  race for Pro Stocks.  Anderson took his time coming through the 24 car field knowing he had extra laps and about the half way mark of the race he was able to take his Hunts Bobcat Pro Stock around the outside of race long leader Gary Vandertoorn.  Anderson held on through traffic for his third win on the season.

The wild and crazy figure 8 race was the final event of the night that saw some edge of your seat excitement with many close calls and some mid track collisions.  Comp 4 regular Brandon Gregory who started in the second row and battled long time racer Bernie Rhebergen as both of them were able to avoid the chaos at the intersection and would go on to finish first and second respectively for the first figure 8 race of the season.

Be sure to join us next week as the Late Models, Canadian Modifieds, Pro Stocks and Comp 4 are all joined by the Leon’s of Trenton School Bus races presented by Lange and Fetter Ford.  This will be the Busses first go around for the 2010 season and many of the drivers are excited to hit the track.  Gates open at 5pm and racing starts at 7pm sharp.  For complete details visit www.brightonspeedway.com
