First Event of 2010 an Icy Success

With over 200 man hours put into creating the 8 inch base of ice on the 1/3rd mile oval at Brighton Speedway, staff and management were very pleased with the 72 participants on Saturday, February 13th for the 7th Annual Oval Ice Races.  The success of the day is in part attributed those volunteers who dedicated their time and energy to creating the icy surface.  Without their help the event would not be a success.  The racers in 14 divisions were pleased with the hard and fast track that saw average speeds of up to 52 mph in the Ultimate Toyz Ice Bikes Divisions.

Snowmobiles, 4 Wheelers, Motorcycles and Endurance cars took the slippery surface for the enjoyment of their frosty fans in the grandstands.  Competition was tight in many of the divisions and fierce at times in the 2 Wheel Drive ATV Division sponsored by Quinte Towing, the Open ATV Division sponsored by Rock 107 and the 701-800cc Snowmobiles sponsored by Larry’s Towing.  The icy surface not only lead to fast speeds and close competition, but played its part in some mishaps throughout the day as well including a roll over by Mike Workman of Brighton on his MXZ Skidoo and Jessie Morgan of Trenton sliding through corner four after being separated from his Pro Division Ice Bike.

The Bill’s Johns 30 lap Endurance Race finished the frosty day with a relentless battle between veteran drivers #111 Shawn Gregory and #77 Bernie Rhebergen.  The field of 14 cars completed their 30 laps in just over 30 minutes, proving their speed and agility on the icy surface.  With Gregory taking the win in the end, the racers were all pleased with the success of the day.  Not all drivers mastered the icy track however as Casey Richardson from Trenton found himself in the turn 4 walls a number of times and Phil Potts from Frankford had to bring his car back up on to the track a few times at both ends from driving in too hard into slippery turns.

With the completion of the Oval Ice Races management at Brighton Speedway looks to complete the 2010 Schedule of Events and provide another successful season of motorsports action for your enjoyment.  The Season will kick off on May 8th with the Coca Cola Full Throttle Season Opener and we are looking forward to an exciting season of racing that will include the return of the Southern Ontario Sprints for 6 events and the all new Vanderlaan Building Products Pro Late Models that will make their debut on the Victoria Day Long Weekend.
