Ferguson Finishes Fifth in Season Opener

PICTON (May 5, 2015) – Dan Ferguson wheeled his No.11 Canadian Modified to a fifth-place finish in the season opening feature at Brighton Speedway on Saturday May 2.

Ferguson started the 25-lap A-Main from the third spot after finishing second in his qualifying heat. Drivers started the feature “heads up” instead of the usual handicapping process on the first night.

“The car was really good in hot laps, not so good in the qualifier, then it was really good in the feature,” Ferguson said.

The No.11 machine quickly moved to second behind polesitter Andrew Hennessy. Ferguson tried the top groove of the racetrack for several laps, but couldn’t gain enough to make a pass for the lead.

“I find that me and Hennessy are fairly equal speed-wise and handling-wise. If you’re even, the guy on the bottom has the shorter way around and is probably going to come out on top,” Ferguson said.

Mid-way through the race, Doug O’Blenis took the second spot from Ferguson. On lap 20, O’Blenis slipped up in turn two and Ferguson tried to take away the bottom line.

“When I went to go under him, he came back down and we made pretty hard contact. We talked about it in the infield afterwards,” Ferguson said. “It was just a tight racing indicent.”

Ferguson suffered a flat right front tire along with a damaged shock and control arm. He restarted at the tail of the field and rebounded with a fifth-place finish.

The top-five finish was a good start to the 2015 season for Ferguson, who hopes to win a track championship for the first time since 2012.

“We just want to be consistent and contend for the win every week. At the end of the year, you just see where the cards fall,” he said.

The Ferguson Motorsports team changed very little to their Rocket by Ruhlman car over the cold Canadian winter other than regular maintenance.

“We were happy with how the car worked last year so we haven’t changed too much on it,” Ferguson said. “Now it’s just up to me to drive it.”

The nuts and bolts of the car haven’t changed, but there are new names on the car. Ferguson Motorsports is proud to welcome back Kilmarnock Enterprise and Mark Heating and Cooling and has also added two new major corporate advertisers for the 2015 season in Cataraqui Woods Dentistry (Kingston) and Manlow Electric (Picton).

“I’m really excited to have both of these companies on board this year,” Ferguson said. “They are essential to our success and we hope we can represent them well with our hard work every week.”

Dan Ferguson will return to action at Brighton Speedway for the second round of the OilGARD Canadian Modified on May 9.
