DOUBLE HEADER WEEKEND A SUCCESS
As the gloomy clouds parted on an afternoon of heat fans lined up to see the second Southern Ontario Sprint event of the 2010 Season at Brighton Speedway. A smooth fast track was ready for over 90 drivers who were on hand to compete as Vanderlaan Building Products presented a hard core night of racing action. With five divisions competing the night was filled with exciting action.
With the Bill’s Johns Comp 4 Division starting off the nights features the four cylinders raced hard with the #10 Travis McLean of Trenton taking the checkered ahead of the #2 Leslie Turcotte of Trenton. This incredibly competitve class has only had one repeat winner on the season and a blanket could have been thrown over the first 15 place cars in the finish as they race so closely together to the finish line.
The Vanderlaan Building Products Pro Crate Late Model division was next on the race card with 30 laps in race two of the Humber Nurseries King of the North Country series. Poll sitters #87 Andrew Hennessy of Picton #57 and Charlie Sandercock of Trenton fought viciously with in a back and forth battle changing the lead 4 times. With Hennessy hugging the inside line, Sandercock running the high line fans were on the edge of their seats as Hennessy narrowly edged Sandercock at the line for his second win of the season.
The Southern Ontario Sprints were quick to start as the #0 Glenn Styres from Ohsweken and #7x Jamie Collard from Burford led the field to the green and the two didn't look back as Styres for the second race in a row led most of the race only to loose it at the finish line. Stryes was running the high line when he got slowed up slightly by a lapped car going into turn three on the last lap when Collard took advantage running the low line and passing Styres for the win coming out of turn 4.
The Bainer’s Radiators Canadian Modified event was won by current points leader #11 Dan Ferguson of Bloomfield. Ferguson travelled from his 9th place starting position and passed Shawn Gregory after Gregory suffered mechanical issues to take the checkered flag followed by the #06 Tim Burke of Carrying Place.
As the last feature of the night hit the track the skies were blackening to the west and officials were eager to complete the event before the rain hit. The Brighton Automotive Pro Stock Duel in the Dirt home track event was chocked full of excitement. Crossing the line to take the checkered was the 2008 and 2009 Champion, #91 Kraig Handley from Picton, followed by the current points leader the #72 “Big Smooth” Doug Anderson. Mid way through the race event, a collision on the back straight called for a break in the action as medics attended to Hot Dog Art Rodgers in the #38. When racing action resumed Mother Nature called an end to the night as skies opened up and rain fell, shortening the race to just over 20 laps of an anticipated 30 lap Duel Race.
With clear skies and under a hot afternoon sun, Hotch’s Autoparts joined us on Sunday for the 200 Lap Father’s Day Enduro. With 50 participants on the racing surface the track was slick and ready for high speed action. Slip sliding and engines revving, a combination of 4, 6 and 8 cylinder cars battled to the finish in an attempt to be the first to complete 200 laps of the 1/3rd mile clay oval. Holding the lead in the end was #44 Brandon Wilke, followed by #24 Dave Small, #07 Randy Whaley and #08 Brian Cross. The double header action this past weekend at Brighton Speedway was exhilarating and awe inspiring for fans and drivers alike.
The nonstop excitement keeps going as Workman Auto Repair presents the Leon’s, Trenton School Bus Races this Saturday, June 26th alongside the Vintage Cars, the Motorsports of Trenton Flat Track 4 Wheelers, Bainer’s Radiators Canadian Modified Division, Brighton Automotive Pro Stock Division, Bill’s Johns Comp 4 Division and the Quinte Towing Stinger Division. Racing begins at 7:00 pm and gates will open early at 5:00 pm to accommodate the crowds. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Speedway Office.
