5th Annual Late Model Great Crate Race Set To Roll At Brighton; Modifieds Gear Up For Danny Reid Memorial

By Clayton Johns

BRIGHTON (September 10, 2015) – Brighton Speedway is excited to welcome the Go Nuclear Late Model Series for the 5th annual McDougall Insurance and Financial Great Crate Race presented by Excel Tower Service, alongside the John’s Equipment Danny Reid Memorial. Dibbit’s Excavating, Hotch’s Auto Parts and Humber Nurseries are all proud to partner with the speedway for this exciting event. Race time is 7:00pm.

Great Crate Race Preview

The 5th annual Great Crate Race will see a full contingent of Brighton Speedway regulars challenge the travelling band of Go Nuclear drivers in a 65-lap showdown. The race will see a swarm of drivers from upstate New York in attendance as they race for the $6000 winner’s prize. Drivers will time trial for their heat race starting position in to this event. The top three drivers in Go Nuclear and Brighton Speedway points are guaranteed starters in the event, but must attempt all qualifying races.

American drivers have won the first four editions of the event with Dale Caswell of West Monroe, NY winning the last two events at Brighton.

Lee Gill of Lafargeville, NY enters the race as the current Go Nuclear point leader with a 15-point advantage over Brighton regular Charlie Sandercock. Gill won the first Great Crate Race in 2011. Central Square, NY native Sean Beardsley currently sits third in the Go Nuclear standings and has been a consistent threat to finish at the front.

Sandercock maintains a comfortable 215-point lead over Picton’s Corey Earl in the RUSH Pro Late Model weekly standings at Brighton while Brighton’s Phil Potts sits third in the championship standings.

The race could also see drivers from southern New York and Pennsylvania travel north for a shot at one of the richest Crate Late Model prizes in North America. With a total purse in excess of $20,000, the field should certainly be equally as impressive as last year’s 33-car show.

Canadian Modifieds Set For Danny Reid Memorial

The Bainer’s OilGARD Canadian Modifieds will be back in action this week for their longest race of the season, a 50-lap showdown in the Danny Reid Memorial. The annual race, which honours former Brighton driver Danny Reid, is the most prestigious race of the season.

The current division point leader, Dan Ferguson of Picton, is the defending race winner after he outdueled Picton’s Andrew Hennessy and Napanee’s Doug O’Blenis. Those three drivers hold the same positions in the point standings and will be equally hungry to earn the victory.

Hennessy is the most recent victor in a points race, winning on September 5. O’Blenis won the topless non-points race last Saturday and also scored the third points victory of the season on August 29. Ferguson won one week prior on August 22. Curtis King and Josh Hennessy complete the current top-five in the standings and will also be tough factors at the front of the field.

Comp 4s Return To Action

The Bill’s Johns Comp 4s return to points racing action this weekend. Shelby Mills holds a slim 30-point lead over Austin Reid at the top of the standings. Trenton’s Tyler French is the only other driver in championship contention as he sits 80 points off the pace.

Pro Stocks Off; Battle In Duel In The Dirt

The Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks have the weekend off at Brighton to allow for travel to Ohsweken and Merrittville Speedways for the Duel in the Dirt Series. The drivers will race Friday at Ohsweken for 50 laps before turning another 50 on Saturday at Merrittville. The Duel in the Dirt Series will conclude at Brighton on September 26 as part of the Applefest Shootout Weekend.

Tickets Please!

Adult General Admission for the 5th annual McDouagall Insurance and Financial Great Crate Race presented by Excel Tower Service is $20. Senior/Youth admission is $18. Children aged 7-12 are $5.

Racing is scheduled to begin at 7:00pm. Hot laps will take place at 6:00pm with hot laps to follow shortly after. Spectator gates will open at 5:00pm.
