Here's what I know about Barrie for next season via the race director:
Plan is to separate the class again and bring the charger division back because of the vast spread in car preperation and driver skill. The chargers would run like the mini's do now, and the mini's would be put on a spec slick hoosier or goodyear. ( This was about half way through the season, I don't have any updates)
My "thoughts" on this without jibbyjebidiah being a moron and having something smart to say.
Don't separate them, by the end of the season this year they only had about 20 minis on any given night. I know some of the guys have sold their cars, or don't plan on going back next year, so even if a few new guys show, I think its safe to say the car count will remain around what it is. So now you will be stuck with 2 classes of 10 cars each, or maybe one with 5 and the other with 15. How exciting will that be to watch when the thunders and late can barely break the 10 car count? Not too mention the extra time on the show with one more feature and probably one more heat.
Its obvious they see there is a problem with the wide spread of performance. How about trying to fix that instead of making 2 separate divisions?
Start pulling off heads, trannys, measuring some of these parts that cant be teched without digging in a little. Any tech guy can look at your tire/ measure your camber, look at your springs. From what I understand, one car did get caught with an aluminum flywheel this year, but that was just with a magnet test, which was stuck through the bottom of the tranny. How does that test for lightened steel ones?
From what I understand Barrie's tech does a good job of this with the thunders, so why not with the minis?
How about bringing in a dyno and making a power/weight rule. ( Wishful thinking, I know it will never happen lol)
And YES I know a car has to go around a corner too, I never said it didn't, so don't come on here and say your car is so fast because it handles, because that's not what I'm talking about. Which brings me to my next point..
Do away with the allowance of a $1200+ set of tires. (If you don't agree with this your either very wealthy and dont see the need for closer competition on the track, or are high on crack).
Another problem with Barrie's minis is that they let the drivers talk them into way too many things and don't stick to their rules. Originally they had planned to ban the $300 tires half way through the season. But everyone who bought them, complained and the new rule was at half season you could still use them on the right side. Or when I showed up at Barrie this year with a gutted hood, because I had run Sunset the year before and they allowed it. So I go through tech, and am told if I want to race next weekend I need to come back with a full hood. I say no problem (even though they hood is already painted and decaled with my main sponsor on it). So when I show up for week #2, I say "hey look, I changed my hood for you guys".. The response is. "Oh you can change it back, the Mustang guy said they can't find original hoods".. (Or maybe its because original hood wouldn't fit on a certain mustang body any more ;), but that's a whole other subject)..
About a week later I'm walking through Cookstown auto wreckers and sure enough there are 3 Fox bodies in there all with hoods
With that said, I honestly DONT care what the hood rules is because the bracing weighs about 2lbs maybe. But was just an EXAMPLE of how easy it is to change the mind of the tech guys.
Aside from the technical stuff, mini's do not need 3 laps before a race to warm up the tires. Its boring for the fans, and a waste of time. And they need to decide on a rule written in stone about involved cars in accidents. One weekend everyone gets their spot back, and the next everyone goes to the back.
So in conclusion:
-Keep the class as one.
-Do not introduce slicks and do away with $1200 + tires
-Tear some motors apart * I will volunteer mine to be the first *
-Tech needs to stick to its guns and not stray from the rules ( and if they do, the need to make the change to the hard copy, so it is clear what the rule actually is and post an amendment on the website)
- Do away with pointless pre-race caution laps
- Decide on an involved car rule and put it in the hard copy of rules, and stick to it.
YES I'm aware this is a lot of bitching and complaining, but I also mentioned proposed changes, and that's what this thread is for. So if you don't have a logical response to something I said instead of saying "your wrong" or "your an idiot" then feel free to keep it shut.
I like some of your ideas, but the whole problem with the minis and tech is how is someone supposed to know everything about all of the different motors??? There are countless motor combinations for the minis, its not like the thunder and LLM where you have 3 motors to choose from. The weight to hp rule is good in theory as well, but there is a couple of problems with it...
1. The dyno actually has to show up at some point in the year
2. If you are going to go off of dyno numbers at the wheels instead of dyno from the factory which is measured at the crank , how do you take torque loss into account, FWD hondas and neons will have between 9-15% torque loss. RWD mustangs and 240's could be as low as 2% it everything is aligned and running through the tranny.
Ex 140 hp(at the crank) FWD= 127 at the wheels (9% loss) =2413lbs if going by dyno numbers, 2660 if going by advertised hp numbers
140hp (at the crank) RWD =137 at the wheels (2% loss) = 2603 if going by dyno numbers, 2660 if going by advertised hp numbers
These numbers are based off of 19lbs/hp
You made some good points. It would have to be measured at the wheels.
Either way I don't ever see a track going this route.
Its an idea that has been thrown around before, and has many flaws, but in my opinion still operates better than on a weight/ cc rule. Some manufacturers make a lot more use of their displacement than others.
Since my mini will be in storage for a long long time I don't know why I even bother to strain my brain over these issues LOL
240 racer is right. Speed up the show, 1 class, leave it alone.
I just picked up a 4 cyl for Barrie next year, its a good car and I payed not much for it, for what I recieved. I DONT want to spend money on it, not paint, not numbers, NOTHING. And certainly not 1,000 dollors on tires, just to keep up to the next guy!!!
I ran thunders for close to 10 years and got fed up with it and all the rule upgrades and money spending. If I have to buy all new yoko or spec tires ill just pack it in and re-sell it and the class will loose more cars! Everyone has 10 spare azenis laying around, so that should be the number one tire, end of story.
Its a good class, I love it, the guys are awsome, and sure I want to win and be up front but if I have fun and get my 50 bucks ill be happy at the end of the day. A bunch of the faster guys and cars left or sold, so it will be a whole new year next year, keep a wrench on your car, just finnish, show up, and you might get a top 3 or the championship. Thats my plan.
If every guy in the division was like you Charlie, it would be the best show on any given Saturday night in Ontario !
