that is wild........they are getting things done
Gee I had no idea that there were that many ppl aware of our Kimmel series car. I guess you all have been patiently waiting to hear how it went so I will give you the total rundown as to how it went including the sad ending.
We started building the car Oct 22, and as of Dec 15th we had a painted chassis...but thats it. We still had to build the rear end, body, complete front suspension, motor, trans, and so on. We definately work our tails off from the 15th on, right thru x-mas and every day up until we left.
The car was painted at 3:30am on Tues and we had planned on leaving at 8am...needless to say the paint wasn't dry enough to load the car, which didnt matter since it wasn't quite ready anyhow. By 2pm on Tues the car was not finished but close enough that we could do the remaining work at the track. We left Bracebridge and drove straight thru to Rockingham with only a few stops for fuel and a couple of meals.
We arrived around 9am Wed at the Rock, and the second the car was unloaded we started the finish the remaining items on our list. We worked striaght for about five hours missing the first practice. We then went thru tech (no line-ups at tech by this point!) and there were only a couple of things that needed attention before they would let us on the track. After finishing those few things we then got the ok from tech to practice.
Leonard jumped in the car for the first practice session and unfortuneately was not able to pick up speed. After the 5 laps of practice session he came in and said the motor did not have any power. I quickly jumped in the car (no time to check it, we didn't have a lot of time left in practice) but I did notice the gas pedal wasn't working correctly (not opening fully). George Duffy and Leonard quickly repaired the gas pedal as I got strapped in. While sitting on pit road waiting to get the ok to go on the track, I noticed the car had a brake leak. I didn't know how much time was left for practice and thought I would risk it anyhow.
I managed to do 3 laps at the Rock and on lap 4 going thru corner 2 the cockpit fill with smoke. I pressed the brake pedal and no front brakes. I coasted into the pits and we found that the RF brake line had sprung a leak. We quickly repaired it and got Len back into the car hoping to get one more test session in. Unfortuneately as he pulled onto the track the cockpit filled with smoke again, we had blown a head gasket and the smoke had been coming from the exhaust.
Needless to say we didn't have a spare with us, and even if we did, we are not sure who would have changed it since all of us had been up for days by this point.
All in all it was a good trip tho, learned a lot, especially to take a spare head gasket! One of those things I guess. Thanks to everyone who helped out and thanks to everyone who has taken an interest. I would like to send a specail thanks to George Duffy and Keith McLeod for their help. Hopefully we will have better luck next time. Stoyan Zutich.
