I'm going to stand up for the Sunset 4-funs here for once....
With a FULL CAGE, race seat, 5 point, fire suit and a racing rim on the RF, I don't see anything wrong with the Sunset 4-funs.
I think they would be cheaper to start in, and you would run more competitively. The Barrie charger class seems to be a bit more competitve, and might take a year of experince.
I wouldn't look for a car to "upgrade" as, if its even allowed, a competive mini-stock car probably won't make the 4-fun rules. You don't want to be wasting a Prelude in 4-funs, and you don't want to try a Tempo in minis.
Remeber tech is not going to save your butt. Only you can do that.
my advice is to start in thunders,you can buy a thunder cheaper than a 4 cyl. doesn't make sense to me either, but it's true! i don't know why i quoted ross's post, must go to bed!LOL

if you need any help finding a car or even looking at a couple, pm me and i'll give you my number. i've been around a while and know crap when i see it. i figure you can get a comptitive thunder for around 4-5 thousand turn key. 4 cyl guys are asking upwards of 6 for half the car???????
well, my four fun has a 4pt, cage, 5 pt harness, racing seat, fuel cell with protection bars, i have a fire suit, meets 4cyl rules, dont see anyting unsafe about that. heck, it has even run as a 4 cyl this year so now with the rule changes, i dont see them beign so unsafe that everyone seems to think they are (except ross)

It doesn't sound like YOUR car is unsafe as it has what you want to be safe.
Ross and many agree that the 44funs with only 1 door bar, or only a halo running stock seats was unsafe-and if you think that is safe in a race car...something is wrong!
