Ok folks sorry for a bit later of a rundown, but it was a later night at the track and just didnt have time before work duty called. To be honest this was one of those nights its a bit hard to write about, due to the fact every time I went to jot a note down another caution flag appeared and I had missed essentially what happened!! 🙁 That said I'll try my best..
The first of twin LLM 40 lap features was actually a pretty decent race that saw #55 Steve Quesnelle grab the early lead, after a soild door to door battle with #2 Mike Brown for the first 5 laps. Brown, would actually get trapped to the high side a few laps later, leaving the door open for #10 Gord Shepherd and #69 Al Inglis to file past to claim 2nd & 3rd respectively.. Inglis, would eventually get around Shepherd, and begin pursuit of Quesnelle at the front of the field. On lap 11, a strange turn of events took place, as leader Quesnelle would veer off into the infield grass entering turn 1. ( Could of been a result of a knock from the 69 but cant say for certainty).. Quesnelle, would lose several positions along the way as a result, but then got a bit of a break when the caution came about one lap later when #8 Dave Lewis took a hard lick against the turn 2 wall, after a collision with the 11 of Gaunt. This would end the night for Lewis, and ironically enough hand the lead back to Quesnelle who was leading at the stripe when we reverted back to the last completed lap.. On the restart the 69 of Inglis would shoot out like a cannon, quickly leaving Quesnelle in his dust, now having to fend off a challenge from brother Ron for 2nd place, a spot the younger Quesnelle would eventually take with an outside pass entering turn 1. In behind the Quesnelle brothers battle, the action was heating up for top 5 positioning as the trio of Shepherd, Brown, and Gaunt were making their presence felt, with #88 Scott Beatty tucked in the pocket in behind looking for racing room.
At the midway point Inglis was setting a torrid pace up front, with laps in the 14.8 sec. range, as Quesnelle began to close ever so slightly, narrowing the lead to a 2-3 car length margin.. On lap 31, the hard charging Shepherd would relieve Steve Quesnelle of third place, with Inglis still holding firm at the front of the field. On lap 34, Quesnelle would continue to get shuffled further back in the running order, as the duo of Gaunt and #54 Randy Bull would pass him to the inside between 1&2. Over the duration, Inglis was able to ride out a narrow win over Ron Quesnelle, with Shepherd coming home a valiant 3rd, while Gaunt and Bull would round out the fast five..
The 40 lap finale was a bit more of a messy affair and a bit of a carbon copy of the 1st feature in terms of results so I'm gonna spare you alot of the deatils!!LOL It did feature a stunning mid race nose to tail battle with the 57 of Quesnelle and the 69 of Inglis, as the wily veteran Inglis really hounded the 57, looking to both the high and low side, with Quesnelle never opening the door enough to allow his veteran counterpart to get a nose to the inside and fully up to his door. These two drivers, who amassed 9 feature wins each last season would come the the checkered in 1-2 positioning yet again, this time with the roles reversed as current point leader Quesnelle would notch his division leading ninth feature win of the reason, thus matching last years total. Shepherd, would once again bring home a respectable 3rd place finish, as Bull and Gaunt would complete the top 5.
The 30 lap Thunder Car feature would also get off to a bit of a slow start, but once the race got going it turned into a pretty solid race. #21 Desi Walt would power out to the early lead, after getting the jump on #92 Teri-Lynne Dixon from the drop of the green. #24 Leonard Johnston was also fast on the move from his 6th place starting position, making an early 3 wide move to eventually check into 2nd in the running order. After a second early caution, Johnston would power around the ever improving 21 of Walt to inheirit the lead, with #14 "Hurricane" Thayne Hallyburton also working his way past Walt's #21 Halford's Tax Service/Frame Shop Monte Carlo.. Also fast on the move was the duo of #44 Dave "The Deuce" Doucette and #77 Brian Murray, as the pair of former track champions carved their way through the pack to land inside the top 5 after starting 11th and 12th respectively.. The third and final caution would fly on lap 20, when rookie contender #55 Shawn Goggins would turn #20 Luke Gignac in the entry of turn 3, with Goggins seeing the dreaded black flag as a result of his actions.
A tough break for the 55 team as I don't think it was intentional, but this will surely hurt a him in what was a tight season long point battle with the 14 of Hallyburton for 3rd place..
Ok back to the actual racing, and the ensuing restart would see the 44 of Doucette wrestle away 2nd from Hallyburton, with a nice clean inside pass in corner 2. Hallyburton, would now find himself unable to find the preferred inside line as he was then in turn freight trained by the trio of #12 Jim "Polish Prince" Belesky, #0 Donny Brandon, and #49 "Flyin" Frank Davey. At the front of the field Johnston was still firmly in control with laps in the 16.1 sec. range, holding Doucette at bay by 3 car lengths, as #10 Rick Walt took over 5th place from Brandon a little further back in the pack. The best battle was the race for 2nd, with Doucette and Belesky waging war for that position, as 4 time track champ Davey shrewedly lurked in behind that battle. Belesky, would eventually work around Doucette with a low pass while exiting turn 2, as Davey would also file pass Doucette 2 laps later with an inside pass entering 3. With two laps remaining, Doucette would now find himself in the clutches of Rick Walt, who looked to the inside in corner 3 on sucessive laps but was unable to make a pass stick in the fight for 4th place.. It was clear nobody was catching Johnston however, as the Bracebridge resident would capture his 2nd feature win of the season by half a straightway over Belesky at the finish.. Davey would record his 3rd top 5 of the season in as many starts with a solid 3rd place showing, as Doucette and Walt comprised the remainder of the top 5..
Four different heat winners came in the form of Johnston, Davey, Walt, and #14 Thayne Hallyburton. For the 2nd week in a row we recorded a season high car count with 19 Thunders taking green, with a few of the Barrie part timers MIA or we could of eclipsed 20 cars for the first time this season..
The Pure Stock feature can be summed up in 3 words. UGLY, UGLY, UGLY. 3 cautions at least before the race was 5 laps old and I might of missed one or two!!! 😉 Nuff said about that.. #39 Travis Hallyburton would take his 2nd feature win of the season, and in the process cut into the point lead of the 02 of Murray who was an early retiring DNF. #13 Dave "Gipper" Glaze would record a tidy 2nd place result, with #26 Ben Melenhorst, #14 Billy Melenhorst, and defending track champ #15 Will Davies rounding out the top 5.
Heat wins went to Hallyburton, Glaze, #02 Shawn Murray, and #31 Jack Horner..
Well that's the best way I can describe a race night that was so very ugly. If anybody detects any inaccuracies or transgressions in what I might of reported here you can take it up with me next week!!! 😉 THERE YOU HAVE IT... FROM THE CHEAP SEATS
Dave you are right in saying the Pure Stock feature was UGLY - I will agree with you there. I came up tonight to help and support Charlie Smith with his new ride til the end of the year and what i saw in the feature didn't look very good. I know that the new ownership group along with the Race Director are doing as much as they can to bring this facility back to it's glory days. It does not help when you have drivers constantly making bonehead decisions throughout the race costing other drivers positions and/or a wrecked ride, maybe a black flag for rough driving once in awhile to those would teach them to try and get a handle on their cars to make them turn. That being said I would like to give a shout out to Charlie Smith on a great effort last night, getting the car to where it is and not knowing how the car will work. Just goes to show you hard work does pay-off, more work to the car this week and hopefully improve on this past saturdays performance.
Thanks again Joe, there is no way I could have that car running at all with out the Fickers help. The heat was brutal and alot had to be done. I hope I can get the safety done so we can work more on setup and power, things are looking good.
Despite all the crashing and banging ( which I caused a bit of lol ) I had a blast. I think with 26 4cyls on the track, and 27 when Terry Tompkins makes it back, you cant help but have wrecks. Its a short race on a small track, with many ajendas out there, rookies, fast cars, slow cars, etc. Darryl tells them to wait and take ur time, well he knows best there is NO time to wait when a race goes by in 10 minutes if it goes green!
The bigger issues here, is the bull crap they let go on at Barrie with people running into each other after races are over, and doing nothing about it, not to mention the time it takes to line people up after a simple spin out!!!
I saw Darryl babysitting WHINERS after the races I'm sure that was NOT why he was hired.
Just shut up and race WHINERS.
I knew there was a reason I never finished my Neon.
*The troll is now going back under the bridge*
Simple spin outs are not always simple. Usually in a simple spin out cars go every which way to avoid that said spin, which most times causes cars to be everywhere but in the right spot. We have a small track which makes moving cars around difficult on cautions.
Single file help here too, we had to go two laps under cautions just to get you guys to get into single file, pre school stuff, so it's not all on the officials here.
