Auto Clearing Motor Speedway

It all started last winter when Mike Schroeder, an owner with Always
Towing presented an idea to the Saskatoon Stock Car Racing Association,
to have a race with cars from multiple divisions on the track at the
same time. At first it was just another crazy idea but as the
presentation went on people began to realize the lap times and speeds of
the pro trucks, the street stocks and the sportsman cars weren’t that
far apart. A few rule changes to equalize things and the Windchill was
born.
Sportsman cars of Dan Shirley, Tim Kammer, Rick Schurmans, Matthew
Shirley and Mike Slaney were up against the pro trucks of Ben Pogoda,
Damen Meier, Andy Clewes, Luc Haukaas, Alex Leschenko, Aaron Anderson,
Kevin Dyck and Neil Schneider, along with the street stocks of Mike
Schroeder, Wayne Osbourne, Ryan Fredrickson, Kevin MacLaggin, Nicole
Sheetka, Justin Tooley, Derek Ronsom and Craig Katelnikoff.
The heat races to set the Windchill 100 line up were fairly tame, with
the winners coming out Kevin Dyck, Matthew Shirley and Alex Lescheko,
putting Leschenko and Shirley on the front row to start the 100 lap
showdown.
Matthew Shirley took the lead in the first lap but was overtaken by Alex
Leschenko in the second lap. Alex held a quite comfortable lead into
the first caution in lap 11 when something on the front end of #51 Luc
Haukaas from The Pas broke, also causing some contact between #22 Ryan
Fredrickson and #44 Craig Katelnikoff, causing Katelnikoff to pull into
his pit for the day.
The next caution flew in lap 30 when the sportsman of #27 Rick
Schurmanns from Melfort tangled with the street stock of #42 Nicole
Sheetka. Nothing major came out of that and the cars quick got
underway with the #46 of Dan Shirley taking over the lead. They kept it
relatively clean going into the competition caution at lap 50 with Dan
Shirley in the lead.
While fueling, crew chief Rob Howlett walked around the #46 Co-op Grand
Prix of Dan Shirley and noticed a tire going down. This would mean
having to take the car behind the wall and resume the race from the back
of the field. The #93 pro truck of Neil Schneider also had to pit.
That gave the lead going back to green to #12 Matthew Shirley and he
took advantage, pulling away from the #19 pro truck of Aaron Anderson.
Caution again in lap 56 as #53 Damen Meier and #27 Rick Schurmanns got
together, ending Schurmann’s day.
Breakage on the #9T of Justin Tooley brought the caution out again a
couple of laps later, causing Tooley put his car to bed for the day.
Alex Leschenko took the lead back from Matthew Shirley in lap 65 and
looked to be cruising to the win. Lap 96 Leschenko had still leading.
Matthew Shirley and Aaron Anderson were battling it out behind him.
Contact between Shirley and Anderson coming out of corner four collected
up the #10 of Kevin Dyck, taking Anderson and Dyck into the wall. With
a four lap shootout and Ben Pagoda leading, Dan Shirley found a hole on
the back straight he threaded his car through to take over the lead with
three laps remaining. Tim Kammer followed Dan leaving Ben Pagoda
wondering what just happened.
Two laps remaining and Alex Leschenko finds himself heading to the pits
as his right front hub decided it had seen enough racing and started
emitting smoke from overheating .
Tim Kammer tried taking it to Shirley, bumping him a couple of times,
but didn’t get enough to throw Dan off the path to victory. The #46
Saskatoon Co-op Grand Prix of Dan Shirley took the inaugural Windchill
100, just .448 seconds ahead of Moose Jaw’s Tim Kammer, driving the #04
New Holland Monte Carlo. Ben Pagoda was third in the #94 Speedtech
Racing Development Toyota Tundra.
In the Earth Works Equipment Sask Legends Series, Chelsey Wilson brought
the #13 Bridge City Collision Ford Coupe to the win in the heat race,
while Blake Erb took the qualifier and Earth Works Feature in the #21
Novakoski Quality Collision Ford Coupe.
Blake Erb also picked up the championship for the season in the Earth
Works Equipment Sask Legends Series with 533 points, ahead of the #2 of
Kerry Neufeld with 514 points and #90 of Danny Meier with 509 points.
With the #22 of Kelsy Toth winning the Bandolero heat race and the #24
of Jaxen Gervais the qualifier, it was an all-out battle in the
Bandolero feature as Gervais had the lead for the first nine laps.
There was excitement as Kelsey Toth fought traffic, even going four wide
through corner four at over 60 miles per hour to take the lead and win
the final Bandolero feature of the year.
The win sealed Kelsey Toth’s championship win as well with 249 points
compared to Jaxen Gervais’ 235. The #93 of Ryley Schneider finished
the year in third with 196 points.
Moving to Sunday, it was a typical near capacity crowd in anticipation
of the Ellenn Plastics Annual Ultimate Enduro. This year there was a
hitch thrown in as the standard Enduro cars would only run two rounds,
with a new class of Run Your Junk also running two rounds.
While there could be two different winners of the two rounds in the
Enduro, somebody else could sneak up the middle and claim the big prize
with the most overall laps, which is exactly what happened.
Round A of the Enduro had the #88 driven by Mike Baht getting to the 75
lap mark first, just ahead of #34 Mike Schroeder, the only other car on
the lead lap. Round B saw the checkered flag flying for the #76 of
Logan Derkson (winner of the Enduro in 2012 and 2013), with #22 Bill Rea
and #1 Scott Barrand also on the lead lap.
When the overall laps were added together, it was the #34 of Mike
Schroeder taking home the $2,000 cheque with 159 laps. #01 Scott
Barrand was the second place winner of $1,500 with 158 laps and the #22
of Bill and Doug Rea claimed third for $1,000.
The #18 Monte Carlo of Mike Rea took home both the $500 prize in the
main Run Your Junk feature and the $150 top prize in the 15 lap bump to
pass Run Your Junk feature.
That wraps it up for the season for the Saskatoon Stock Car Racing
Association at the Auto Clearing Motor Speedway. The year-end banquet
will be held November 8 at the Prairieland Park Exhibition, where all
the championship and runner up trophies will be handed out.
I want to take a moment to personally thank all the media receiving
these reports for their time and attention reading them. I know we are
a small part of a large contingent struggling for every little bit of
attention for air time you can give. I want to thank you for what you
have been able to provide this season. Every little bit counts and is
appreciated.
