Season Opener
Race fans came out to enjoy a warm Saturday afternoon at Auto Clearing
Motor Speedway as the Saskatoon Stock Car Racing Association kicked off
its 53rd race season, its 10th at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway.
Many would say it was a typical opening day as drivers shook the winter
cobwebs from their cars and trucks and found what they forgot to fix
last fall after the season was over. A rotor failure here, and broken
axle over there, a diff seizing up, it’s all part of opening day fun.
Fans were treated to some excellent and exciting racing from veteran
drivers, along with new drivers and some changing divisions. The Golf’s
Car Wash Mini Stock Division has three new drivers in Jason Venne, Riley
Surcom and Scott Kozak. Roger McConnell pulled his old Torino out of
storage and joined back into the Golf’s Car Wash Street Stocks after a
number of years in the pro truck division and the last couple in
Legends. Kade Thompson is new in the Tiger Automotive Pro Truck
division, while Robin Boomsma made the jump from mini stock champion to
the pro trucks.
Brennan Kirton started the afternoon off for the Golf’s Car Wash Mini
Stocks with a fast time trial lap of 17.346 seconds in the #92 Denny’s
Restaurant Prelude. He was followed by the #25 of Tanner Reimer at
17.429 seconds and veteran racer, #41 Jim Barnsley, at 17.538 seconds.
14 year old Cole Nixey took the first checkered flag of the afternoon,
taking the #23 33rd Street Auto Integra across the line first in the
mini stock heat race, followed closely by #41 Jim Barnsley and #92
Brennan Kirton. Cole did it again in the mini stock qualifier, taking
checkers ahead of #41 Jim Barnsley and #25 Tanner Reimer.
It was Jim’s turn to show the kids how it’s done in the Golf’s Car Wash
Mini Stock Feature though, taking the first 2015 ACMS commemorative
checkered flag in the #41 Street Wise Service Neon, with #23 Cole Nixey
and #92 Brennan Kirton following him across the line.
In the Golf’s Car Wash Street Stocks, Brennan Forseille turned the
fasted time trial lap at 16.239 seconds in the #28 Ghost Transportation
Camaro. Brennan was followed up by #18 Mike Rea at 16.340 seconds and
#22 Ryan Fredrickson with 16.477 seconds.
Brennan showed he is going to be the car to beat in the 2015 Golf’s Car
Wash Street Stock Division as he picked up the checkered flag in the
heat and the qualifier. #3 Kevin MacLaggin was second in the heat race
and #81 Curtis Houben was third. #22 Ryan Fredrickson was second in the
qualifier with #42 Nicole Sheetka third.
It was a different story in the Golf’s Car Wash Street Stock Feature
Race though as Brennan and Nicole battled for more than half the race,
but in the end it was the #42 Rainbow International Restoration Impala
of Nicole Sheetka that took home the commemorative checkered flag, with
the #28 of Brennan Forseille right on her tail, followed by the #22 of
Ryan Fredrickson.
In the Tiger Automotive Pro Truck Division, Kevin Dyck’s #10 Wheaton GM
Silverado laid down the quickest time trial lap at 15.674 seconds. #94
Ben Pogoda was second at 15.972 seconds and #01 Alex Leschenko was third
at 16.032 seconds.
Kevin Dyck also won the first heat race ahead of #19 Aaron Anderson and
rookie #21 Kade Thompson. #49 Shantel Firth took Heat B in her Prairie
Dodge Dealers Association Ram, followed by the #94 of Ben Pogoda. The
#10 of Kevin Dyck also picked up the first qualifier race, followed by
Ben Pogoda and #15 Andrew Hardy, while the #5 Success Office Systems
Toyota Tundra of Ian McLean took the second qualifier, followed by #8
Andrew Clewes and #01 of Alex Leschenko.
In the main feature race, the Tiger Automotive Pro Truck 40, it was
Andrew Hardy in the #15 D&S Developments 2015 Dodge Ram that made its
way to the finish line first after a late race caution, just ahead of
the #10 of Kevin Dyck and #94 Ben Pogoda.
