Everything was perfect for a long weekend in Saskatchewan. The sun was
shining, the temperatures terrific and Friday night racing to kick it
all off at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway.
The night ended early for two WSSL super late model drivers as Trevor
Hannay and Jason Gervais tangled in pre-race practice. Jason spun the
#88 2013 Commercial Sandblasting Ford Fusion coming out of corner one.
Trevor, rounding the corner in the #44 Moody’s Equipment Bourgault Chevy
Impala couldn’t move around him and the two connected head on, with
both cars sustaining heavy front end steering and suspension damage and
parking them for the night.
The rest of the night was rather uneventful, just some true-grit
Saskatchewan racing. The racing was tight, the finishes were even
tighter as many of the winners had to be visually affirmed at the line.
The Brock Salvage Thunder Stocks got the night under way and saw one of
the only four cautions of the night as Scott Barrand lost a rear wheel
in lap five with the #49 Prairie Meats Special, ending Scott’s night.
The #18 of Mike Rea held the lead through most of the race with Curtis
Houben on his tail. Curtis had the edge at the line in lap 14, but Mike
managed to squeak by, putting the nose of the Dauo Auto Monte Carlo
across the line .021 seconds ahead of Curtis. Curtis was second in the
#81 and #22 Ryan Fredrickson was third.
In the Brock Salvage Thunder Stock qualifier, Mike Rea did it again as
he took a little more comfortable win, piloting the #18 Monte Carlo
across the line .832 seconds ahead of the #81 Curtis Houben. Floyd
Ransom was third in the #7 Ranco Manufacturing Caprice.
For the dash for cash feature race, Curtis must have found the right
adjustments as his drove his way to victory in the #81 Culligan Water
Matters Impala almost three seconds ahead of second place #18 Mike Rea.
Ryan Fredrickson continued to show his improvement as he brought the
#22 Globe Excavating Impala in for third.
The tight racing and close finishes continued in the WSSL Auto Parts
Super Late Model races. Glen Hertzke may have led all 15 laps of the
heat race, but he wasn’t assured the win as he only made it to the line
in the #14 SPI Security 2012 Impala .080 seconds ahead of the #70 of
Trent Seidel. Howard Crossman was third in the #56.
The racing was just as tight in the WSSL Auto Parts SLM qualifier, but
this time Hertzke had to start at the back after winning the heat. The
#55 of Jim Gaunt got off to a good start, but Trent Seidel quickly got
the #70 into second and set his sights on Jim. Trent worked his way by
Jim in the third lap, taking the lead he would not relinquish.
Meanwhile, Hertzke was on his way forward and slid by Gaunt in the sixth
lap. Try as he might, Hertzke couldn’t catch Seidel and Trent Seidel
went on to win the qualifier with the #70 Elance Steel SMP 2013 Camaro.
The #14 of Glen Hertzke was second and Howard Crossman brought the #56
around Jim Gaunt for third.
The WSSL Auto Parts Super Late Model dash for cash feature saw the third
caution flag of the night as Glen Hertzke looped the 14 SPI Security
Impala around coming out of corner four on the opening lap of the 45 lap
feature race. As the first lap was not complete, this called for a
complete restart.
This time Hertzke got a good start, but was overtaken by the #56 of
Howard Crossman in lap three. Hertzke and Crossman battled for several
laps taking the lead back and forth until Hertzke slipped out in front
in lap nine. By lap 14 Seidel had moved in behind Glen, chasing him
down and finally getting by him and taking the lead in lap 19. Trent
and Glen continued to battle. It finally looked like Trent had settled
into the lead in lap 24 but Howard Crossman gave Jim Gaunt a push
through corner two, spinning Jim around and bringing out the final
caution of the night.
You could feel the tension on the restart with Seidel on the pole and
Hertzke outside of him, but Seidel, controlling the pace, got the jump
and raced through corner one with a ½ car lead with Herzke beside him.
Hertzke had to settle in behind him down the back straight and by the
time they came around to the line Seidel was clearing pulling away.
But Howard Crossman wasn’t finished as he took the final green from the
rear of the field and started working his way through the traffic
towards the front. By lap 33 he was on Hertzke’s tail and had his
sights on Seidel by lap 41. It wasn’t to be though Howard was not able
to catch the leader. Trent Seidel collected the top money and checkered
flag with the #70 Elance Steel SMP 2013 Camaro. Howard Crossman settled
for second in the #56 Cindy Moleski Photography Impala. Glen Hertzke
filled the third podium spot with the #14 SPI Security Impala.
The Budget Street Stocks ran the entire night caution free, but the
racing was just as tight and just as exciting as the other two
divisions. Brennan Forseille opened the street stock night taking the
heat race checkered flag in the #28 Ghost Transportation Camaro. Like
the other two heat races though, it was a photo finish as Brennan was
only .060 seconds ahead of the #14 Camaro of Guy Derdall. The #47
Camaro of Calvin Heilman was third.
Brad Wrennick picked up the checkered flag in the Budget Street Stock
qualifier with the #88 Access 2000 Elevator & Lift Cutlass, a full third
of a lap ahead of the #34 of Mike Schroeder. The #47 of Calvin Heilman
is obviously picking up his program this year as he finish in a
comfortable third.
In the final dash for cash feature of the night, the Budget Street Stock
feature, Calvin Heilman led the first 25 laps while Mike Schroeder
worked his way through the field. It took Schroeder only two laps to
find an opening around Heilman, taking the lead for the final 20 laps
and the checkered flag with the #33 Camaro. Meanwhile Guy Derdall
worked his way to second in the #14 Camaro and Brad Wrennick was third
with the #88 Access 2000 Elevator & Lift Cutlass.
Several race teams will have their cars on display Monday in Diefenbaker
Parks for the Canada Day celebrations. Racers get an extra week to work
on their cars as the Canada Remembers Our Heroes Air Show takes over the
track July 6 and 7. Featured are the Snowbirds and the CF-18 Hornet
Demo Team. The grounds are open from 11:00am to 6:00pm each day, with
the ceremonies and air demonstrations beginning around 1:30pm each day.

Bobcat of Saskatoon Sask Legends, the Midwest Combustion Sportsman and
the PartSource Mini Stocks. Gates open at 5:00, with the first green
flag at 6:05pm
