The Auto Clearing Motor Speedway kicked off the long weekend with a Pro
Truck double feature, along with the street stocks and super late models.
16 year old super late model rookie Jarrod Reddekopp put on quite the
show for fans as he took on veteran contenders Jim Gaunt, Dave Bone and
Jason Gervais in the heat and the qualifier, having to settle for second
in both races.
In the heat, Reddekopp pulled away from the green flag with the lead but
quickly had Dave Bone in his mirror. A battle ensued until Jim Gaunt
entered the picture and Bone had to turn his attention to keeping ahead
of Gaunt rather than passing Reddekopp. Gaunt slipped by Bone though
and set his sights on Reddekopp.
It was nail biting as Reddekopp held his ground, side by side with Gaunt
through several laps. Gaunt, with over thirty years of racing
experience, Reddekopp with two years in mini stocks before moving to
super late model this year. It was not to be though as a little slip
with two laps remaining and Gaunt pulled out for the lead. Jim Gaunt
would take the win in the #55 Sky Financial - The Mortgage Centre Impala
SS with Reddekopp close behind.
It was much the same story in the late model qualifier where Jason
Gervais pulled into the lead off the green flag, with Doug Bienia and
Dave Bone in tow. After only two laps though Reddekopp found himself
around Bone and Bienia with only Gervais between him and a checkered flag.
With only three race meets of experience Jarrod showed he wasn’t afraid
and wasn’t backing down. We didn’t see any of the old Seidel love taps,
but we did see Jarrod poking inside and outside, but just couldn’t get
enough of Gervais’ car to get around him.
Reddekopp settled back to give his car a rest and immediately found
Gaunt on his tail. With three laps remaining Reddekopp had to
concentrate on hanging on to second, rather than going for the win.
That’s the way the qualifier ended, with Jason Gervais and the #88
Painters & Allied Trades Local 739 Ford Fusion crossing the line ahead
of Reddekopp and Gaunt.
Queue up the WSSL Auto Parts Super Late Model Feature race and it was
another Jarrod Reddekopp show for the first 15 laps before Jim Gaunt
took over the lead. Jarrod wasn’t giving up though and continued to be
a factor in Jim’s mirror.
A lap into a restart at lap 29 and Reddekopp and Gervais just clipped
each other. Gervais fishtailed away but Reddekopp was headed for the
inside wall. Reddekopp stomped on the gas pedal to regain control and
managed to keep the car off the wall, but as he made his way through
several hundred feet of grass he hit something, which broke a lower
control arm.
After a Cinderella night, the #97 Tiger Automotive Chevy SS was going
home on the hook.
The remaining ten laps of the race weren’t quite as exciting, only
because ‘the kid’ was done and no matter what, there is something inside
you that pulls for ‘the kid’, Jim Gaunt went on to win the WSSL Auto
Parts feature, with #38 Dave Bone running second and the #88 of Jason
Gervais third.
Although Craig Katelnikoff has what is probably an insurmountable lead
in the Brock Salvage Street Stock division points run, he wasn’t backing
down Friday night. He took the win in the first street stock heat,
about ½ car length ahead of the #15 of Todd Pluhator.
It was Tony Mikulcik in the street stock qualifier though, taking the
lead from Brennen Forseille about half way into the race. Forseille
slipped back another spot as Ryan Fredrickson #22 Camaro took over
second. The #14 Camaro of Tony Mikulcik managed to hang on for the win
ahead of Fredrickson.
In the Brock Salvage Street Stock Feature, the #15 Precision Driving
School Camaro of Todd Pluhator pulled away from the green flag and led
the first 20 laps of the 40 lap feature. Craig Katelnikoff worked his
way up from near the back and took over the lead with Darryl Potts
following right behind to take over second.
Darryl showed his Ford Torino had something for Katelnikoff’s Monte
Carlo and it was a battle right to the end as Katelnikoff was first to
the line by not much more than a bumper in the #44 Ridge Riders Roofing
Monte Carlo. #38 Darryl Potts was second while the #14 of Tony Mikulcik
was third.
In the battle of the ever competitive and crowd pleasing FFUN Motor
Group Pro Truck division, we had six races including two features,
producing six different winners.
In the first set of heats, which are the trucks split from last week’s
feature race into fast and slow, Kevin Dyck took the fast heat in the
#10 Fast Cat Service Silverado, just beating #67 Ken Ross to the line.
Aaron Anderson took the slow heat with his brand new transmission in the
#19 Ens Auto Group Toyota Tundra, ahead of #01 Alex Leschenko.
We move on to the qualifier races. The first qualifier is the odd
finishing trucks from the heat races and the second is the even
finishing trucks from the first heats.
Bill Zubrecki picked up the win in the first qualifier in the #18
Bugsy’s Bar & Grille Silverado, chased across the line by the #12 of
Aaron Deagnon. Ken Ross and the #67 Grace Byer Remax Silverado was
about half a truck length ahead of the #01 Alex Leschenko for the win in
the second qualifier.
In the first FFUN Motor Group Pro Truck Feature, which was dedicated to
Canada’s current serving military personnel, Alex Leschenko’s #01 Family
Pizza Ford F150 took home the first commemorative checkered flag, ahead
of the #67 of Ken Ross and #10 Kevin Dyck.
The final feature of the night was the FFUN Motor Group Pro Truck
Feature dedicated to Canada’s fallen military. The race was started
with a three wide parade of the trucks along with the #10 of Kevin Dyck
driving away, leaving the pole position open to signify the missing
soldier. This was followed by a moment of silence and the trucks
waiting on the back straight.
There was no waiting as the green flag flew and #53 Damen Meier took off
from the pack. It only took seven laps though and Andrew Hardy,
followed by Shantel Firth got by Meier to take over the lead. It was a
lead and a parade that wouldn’t change as the #15 D&S Developments Dodge
Ram of Andrew Hardy went on to win the feature, followed by the Shantel
Firth in the #49 Prairie Dodge Dealers Association Dodge Ram and Aaron
Deagnon in the #12 Great Canadian Oil Change Dodge Ram.
Next week we’re back on Saturday night with the second of four Dakota
Dunes Western Canada Super Late Model Championship Series races, who
will be running the Castrol 150. Joining the Super Late Models are the
Brock Salvage Street Stock and the Midwest Combustion Sportsman Divisions.
Racing is Saturday, August 9th. Front gates open at 4:30pm and the
first green flag is at 6:05pm. There is also open practice for the
Dakota Dunes Series Friday from noon to 6pm
