The sprint car set is already in action down in Florida on two fronts...The All Star Circuit of Champions series is at Ocala, and the American Sprint Car Series is at East Bay...Both got rained out Thursday night, but ran last night to officially open the North American "outdoor" sprint car racing season for 2009.
Canadians in action at East Bay include Glenn Styres (Ohsweken, Ontario), Steve Poirier (St. Mathieu-de-Beloeil, Quebec), Michael Parent (Granby, Quebec), and Lou Kennedy, Jr. (Winnipeg, Manitoba)...47 cars were on hand and the best Canadian finisher was Kennedy with a heat race win and 7th place in the feature.
No Canadian drivers in action at Ocala, but former SOS driver Daryl Turford is there working on the Sam Hafertepe, Jr. car, which will again follow the World of Outlaws tour when that series kicks off at Volusia next week...Sam and the team had a tough night last night and got crashed in the feature, but he'll be looking for revenge tonight. '08 Canadian Sprint Car Nationals champ Wayne Johnson of Oklahoma is also on hand at Ocala, but had problems last night and finished at the back of the feature...
Saturday night at East Bay saw Lou Kennedy come home as top Canadian again (12th place), while Michael Parent also made the feature, but scratched after a fire erupted in the cockpit of his car...
Michael got out of the car under his own power, but has severe burns on his neck, one of his hands, and his legs...He was flown from Tampa to a hospital in Montreal yesterday. Further updates will be posted on www.empiresupersprints.com
Jesse Hockett of Missouri took a emotional East Bay feature win, which is called the Ronald Laney Memorial King of the 360's in honour of Jesse's cousin, who perished in the event in 2002.
Saturday's Ocala action saw the Sam Hafertepe car with Mitchell, Ontario's Daryl Turford on the crew finish in 15th in the feature.
The All Star Circuit of Champions sprints have moved on to Volusia Speedway Park this week and have 2 nights of action already in the books...Canadians on hand have included Glenn Styres and Lou Kennedy, while the Sam Hafertepe car is also there with Turford on the crew. Tough fields of 46 and 45 cars on the first 2 nights have kept both Styres and Kennedy out of the features so far...
Tonight is the final night of All Stars action before the World of Outlaws kick off their season with 3 nights of action also at Volusia, starting tomorrow.
