Cory Turner Claims First Career 360 Sprint Car Championship With SOS

Now Set for Canadian Sprint Car Nationals at Ohsweken

CAISTOR CENTRE, Ont. (September 11, 2018) – Cory Turner finally got to enjoy the fruit of the season’s labour when he officially earned the Southern Ontario Sprints 2018 championship with a fifth-place finish in KT Gas & Convenience/Silo Wireless No.97 on Saturday, September 8 at Merrittville Speedway. The championship is the first of his Sprint Car career.

Turner and his Hill’s Racing/Cory Turner Motorsports team finished sixth or better in each of the eight races on tour, including a win at Brighton Speedway on July 7, which was one of five podium finishes and six top-fives.

“It’s pretty cool,” said Turner. “We were the most consistent team. I only finished outside the top-five twice. It feels good now that we got it done. Our team worked hard at the Hill’s Racing shop until 3am every Friday and then came back and thrashed in the morning to go wherever we were going with the SOS. We are very privileged to have their support. I can’t thank our car owners Miles Hill and Pam Thomas our crew and our partners enough for their support. We’re pretty pumped to be the 2018 SOS champions.”

Saturday’s race was not easy on the Caistor Centre driver’s nerves as he looked to pilot his Townline Variety/Mobil 1/King’s Wood Products No.97 to the SOS title. Entering the race, Turner needed only a finish of 12th or better to guarantee the title over brother Ryan Turner. Cory worked hard to keep his nose clean and drive to a fifth-place finish on a very slick Merrittville surface.

“The championship came down to the last race,” Turner said. “Once we took the white flag, I felt good because I knew there were guys laps down and we couldn’t finish last. My brother had been running second and third all night and he was really good. We fell back to seventh at one point before I got back to fifth.”

“We were running down my brother and Dylan Westbrook in traffic late in the race,” Turner continued. “With a little bit of luck, I think we could have been on the podium. A top-five still feels good after we ran clean. We were pretty happy with the car late in the race.”

The top-five finish at Merrittville followed an eighth-place run during the final points night for the weekly Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak series at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday, September 7. When the dust settled, Turner finished third in the weekly standings at his home track.

“I had a tough heat race with Hafertepe and Kreutter in my heat race, “ Turner said. “I got the jump on my brother and took the lead. We led the first four laps until Sam gave me a big slider. I was pretty happy we beat him for four laps. Then the caution came out and Kreutter slid me and I slid him back, but I just didn’t get around him. I was probably just as fast as him and I don’t think he would have got me without the caution.”

Turner third-place finish after starting second in the heat meant he missed the redraw by one spot and started ninth for the 20-lap main event.

“I got pinched off on lap one and fell back to 13th,” Turner said. “We started rolling around on the top and got back up to eight before we had a caution with four to go. We nearly went from 13th to sixth in about 15 laps, so I was pretty happy with the car.”

Now, Turner has turned his focus towards the 14th Canadian Sprint Car Nationals at Ohsweken on Friday, September 14 and Saturday, September 15. Saturday’s $10,000 USD-to-win and $1,000 USD-to-start race is the pinnacle of 360 Sprint Car racing in the northeast and is the event Turner builds towards all season long.

“We have been getting better and better on the slick tracks all year, so we are looking forward to an ultra-slick surface on Saturday at the Nationals,” Turner stated. “The Nationals is our Crown Jewel race. We work all year for it, so we want to make sure we get in the show and then work from there. We transferred through our heat race last year, so I’d like to do it again this year.”

Currently, the entry list for the 2018 edition of the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals sits at 68 cars. Turner will be vying for one of 30 spots in Saturday’s 35-lap A-Feature. For complete event details, visit www.ohswekenspeedway.ca. (August 17, 2018) – Scott Kreutter grabbed his first career Ohsweken win in the Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Car versus Southern Ontario Sprints Feature on Friday night.

Adam West and Mack DeMan paced the field to the green flag for the Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars versus Southern Ontario Sprints 25-lap Feature. Before the race hit turn one though, Mike Thorne and Scott Burke were flipping wildly upside down. Both drivers were uninjured, but their cars were destroyed.

West pulled into the pits prior to the restart, handing the inside of the front row to Alden, NY native Scott Kreutter for the complete restart. Kreutter took full advantage as he drove to the lead on the opening lap and paced the field to the first caution on lap four.

Following the restart, Kreutter was in traffic by lap nine and led a three-car breakaway from the field with Dylan Westbrook and DeMan following. Kreutter stayed about 10 car lengths ahead of Westbrook or DeMan, who repeatedly switched the second spot, until the final caution of the race on lap 23 when Jim Huppunen spun at the top of turn three while running in the top-10.

Kreutter was strong on the green-white-checkered finish and scored his first career win here at Ohsweken over Westbrook, who took the runner-up spot from DeMan on the final lap. Mikey Kruchka and Steve Lyons rounded out the top-five. Lyons, Kreutter and Westbrook were heat race winners earlier in the night.

SOUTHERN ONTARIO SPRINTS RACE REPORT
2018 SEASON EVENT #6 – FRIDAY, AUGUST 17, 2018
OHSWEKEN SPEEDWAY – OHSWEKEN, ONTARIO, CANADA

A-Feature (25 laps – No Time)
Finish. Both Cory and Ryan Turner have already scored SOS wins this season, along with Dylan Westbrook.

The Friday, August 17 event at Ohsweken pits the SOS tour regulars against Ohsweken's weekly 360 racers, though many drivers can be found in the championship points standings for both the SOS and Ohsweken. The SOS tour has competed 104 times at Ohsweken since the banked 3/8 mile oval opened on June 16, 1996. Keith Dempster and Glenn Styres are tied atop the all-time SOS feature win list at Ohsweken with eight victories each. Dylan Westbrook was the victor in the 2017 SOS vs. Ohsweken event. Along with the SOS, Friday's event is in support of the Canadian National Autism Foundation Kids Race program, and also features Crate Sprint Cars, Thunder Stocks, and Mini Stocks.

The Saturday, August 18 event at South Buxton will find the SOS tour back where it all began; the inaugural SOS race was held at the unique D-shaped 1/3 mile track on May 18, 1996. The SOS tour has competed at South Buxton 37 times since that first event, with Mike Ling still leading the all-time SOS feature win list there with five victories. Dylan Westbrook swept both SOS visits to South Buxton last season. Along with the winged 360 Sprint Cars of the SOS tour, Saturday’s event will also feature South Buxton's Late Models, Modifieds, Thunder Stocks, and Mini Mods.

WHAT:
Southern Ontario Sprints 2018 Season Rounds Six & Seven

WHERE:
Ohsweken Speedway
1987 Chiefswood Rd
Ohsweken ON Canada N0A 1M0
Phone: 519-717-0023
Website: www.ohswekenspeedway.ca
Twitter: @ohswekenspdway
Facebook: www.facebook.com/OHSWEKENSPEEDWAY

South Buxton Raceway
20954 A D Shadd Rd
Merlin ON Canada N0P 1W0
Phone: 519-365-8268
Website: www.southbuxtonraceway.ca
Twitter: @SouthBuxton
Facebook: www.facebook.com/SouthBuxtonRacewayMerlin

WHEN:
Ohsweken Speedway - Friday, August 17, 2018 - Racing begins @ 7:30 p.m.

South Buxton Raceway - Saturday, August 18, 2018 - Racing begins @ 7:00 p.m.

2018 SOS CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS - TOP 10
(As of July 28, 2018)
Rank. The 27-year-old stole the lead away from Holly Porter late in Saturday night’s 25 lap Southern Ontario Sprints A-Feature at Brighton Speedway, and drove on to victory.

Kyle Phillips and Holly Porter made up the front row of the feature race with Porter, fresh off a Crate Sprint Car feature win on Friday at Ohsweken, taking the early lead. Ryan Turner quickly moved up from his third row starting spot to challenge Phillips for second followed by Cory Turner, who was looking to win two in a row at Brighton.

Dylan Westbrook’s quest for a third consecutive SOS championship got more difficult when problems with his throttle mechanism caused the 19-year-old to spin twice in the early going before dropping out. The final yellow flag of the race occurred on lap 21 when April Wilson spun in turn four, setting up a dash to the finish. Ryan Turner took advantage of the opportunity to get past Porter and take the win, while Cory Turner took the runner-up spot, followed by Porter, Tyler Rand, and Tyler Hendricks. Jamie Turner, Chris Jones, Shawn Sliter, Frank Baranowski, and Steve Lyons rounded out the top ten.

Heat races were claimed by Kyle Phillips, Holly Porter, and Dylan Westbrook, while Tyler Hendricks took the win in the Docks Are Us Dash For Cash.

Next on the Southern Ontario Sprints schedule is a doubleheader weekend; the SOS tour will race at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday, August 17, followed by Saturday night racing at South Buxton Raceway on August 18.
CORY TURNER SCORES SECOND CAREER SOS WIN WITH DOMINATING PERFORMANCE AT BRIGHTON
.

By Clayton Johns

BRIGHTON, Ont. (July 7, 2018) – Cory Turner took full advantage of his pole starting position at Brighton Speedway on Saturday night. Turner started on the front row for round two of the Southern Ontario Sprints 2018 campaign aboard his Hill’s Racing No.97 and held off Mitch Brown through lapped traffic to lead all 25 laps for his second career victory with the Southern Ontario Sprints.

“it got a little hairy there at times,” Turner said in Victory Lane, “ but if you’re going to win Sprint Car races, you better be good in lapped traffic. This car was absolutely phenomenal and these guys just thrashed today to get this thing together. It was just a rocket. I can’t thank Pam, Miles and Alex Hill enough for letting me run their stuff and (the crew) was just phenomenal today. We’re going to have a big party tonight!”

Cory Turner started on the front row with his father, who made the redraw after beating Cory in the first heat race of the night and also won the DockRUs.ca Dash for Cash. Cory jumped to the early advantage, but the caution flag waved before the second lap was complete when Mike Ferrell spun his No.15 in turn two.

On the ensuing restart, seventh-starting Chris Jones of Picton, Ont. made a run forward and moved into third behind Brantford, Ont. driver Mitch Brown by lap five. Cory Turner raced away from the Brown and Jones in clean air with a half straightaway advantage on the one-third mile oval, but encountered lapped traffic on lap eight. Turner was saved from having to move through the slower cars just as Brown had caught the race leader before the caution flag waved on lap 10 as defending series champion Dylan Westbrook spun in turn four.

Brown offered his best on the restart, but remained second ahead of Jones, Jake Brown and Jamie Turner. By lap 17, the top three remained the same with Cory working into traffic again, this time maintaining his lead as he worked through the slower cars.

With five laps to go, two lapped cars separated Cory Turner from Mitch Brown and the race seemed in hand for the driver of the No.97. Then, with 23 laps complete, Cory tried to slide between two slower cars in turns one and two, moving up just in front of Ferrell’s No.15. Slight contact between the front bumper of Ferrell and the tail tank of the No.97 pitched Ferrell sideways and caused contact with Mike Thorne’s No.55. Thorne came to rest on an infield tractor tire, ending his night.

The third and final yellow flag set up a green-white-checkered finish. In clean air, Cory Turner wouldn’t be denied the victory as he drove to the win over Mitch Brown and 2014 series champion Chris Jones.

“We were just second best tonight, plain and simple,” Mitch Brown relayed in Victory Lane. “Good job to Cory. They ran a good race.”

“The bottom was the place to be tonight,” said Chris Jones following the race. “We just put this car back together. It was the car we ran last year and I thought we ran better with it so we put it back together and had a decent run.”

Jake Brown claimed fourth while 13th starting Ryan Turner finished fifth to claim the night’s hard charger. Shawn Sliter, Dylan Westbrook, Tyler Hendricks, Holly Porter and Jamie Turner rounded out the top-10.

The Southern Ontario Sprints continue their 2018 season when they return to Brighton Speedway for Round 3 on Saturday, July 28. (June 16, 2018) – Dylan Westbrook ran down Mitch Brown in lapped traffic and passed him on lap 24 before leading the final two laps to secure victory in a non-stop Southern Ontario Sprints season opener at Brighton Speedway on Saturday night.

Brown and Kyle Fraser started on the front row for the 25-lap feature with Brown jumping out to an early lead aboard his familiar blue No.10. Third-starting Jake Brown tried to take second from Fraser in the early laps, but stuck to third while seventh-starting Cory Turner raced forward to fourth over the opening two laps and Westbrook followed closely behind into the top-five.

By lap five, Mitch Brown had already found his way into lapped traffic and had opened a 10 car-length lead over Fraser. As Brown navigated the slower cars, Turner tracked down Fraser and made the pass for second on lap 10 with Westbrook following him through the open hole to take third.

At the halfway mark, Mitch Brown held a half straightaway lead over Turner and Westbrook, who were nose to tail for the second spot. Brown worked the bottom groove of the speedway whenever he could in traffic while Turner and Westbrook preferred the top against a very thin cushion. On lap 17, Westbrook’s momentum in the outside lane propelled him to second in turn two just as Turner was forced to let off the gas to avoid collision with a slower car.

Two laps later, Westbrook had erased Brown’s lead and on lap 19 the two drivers were side-by-side for the race lead with a pair of lapped cars battling in the same fashion just in front. Westbrook took the outside lane to the lead in turn two, but Brown threaded the needle back through the lapped cars to retain the point at the start-finish line.

With two laps remaining, Westbrook was back in the outside lane and had the preferred track position as Brown was forced behind a lapped car and surrendered the lead on the backstretch. With less than two laps to go, Brown ran out of time to rebuild his momentum for a final run at Westbrook and settled for second. Cory Turner earned a third-place finish to round out the podium.

Ryan Turner made some late passes to earn a fourth-place finish while former series champion Chris Jones completed the top-five. (Photo by Dale Calnan/Image Factor Media).

CAISTOR CENTRE, Ont. – July 28, 2017 – Cory Turner had a busy week of Sprint Car racing with three races in five nights at Ohsweken Speedway. The driver of the KT Tobacco/Silo Wireless No.97 added to his notebook on what was largely a slick racetrack with information that will be valuable for the $12,000-to-win Canadian Sprint Car Nationals in September.

On Friday night during Christmas July and Autograph Night, Turner was able to meet hundreds of fans for autographs and photos on the track at intermission. Despite struggles in his heat race Turner was able to advance from 17th to 11th in the Feature.

“We just needed to be better in the heat race,” said Turner. “We didn’t move forward and we were buried. The car was decent in the Feature, we just didn’t get as many spots as we would have liked, but we were in one piece.”

After taking the weekend off, Turner and his team were back in action for the Northern Summer Nationals at Ohsweken. A tough draw to start the night hurt Turner’s No.97 team as they started at the back of the heat race and finished eighth and then missed transferring to the Feature by one spot against the tough 31-car field.

“When you have Kyle Larson, Danny Lasoski and Parker Price-Miller, you have a pretty stout field,” Turner said. “We had a poor draw, started last in the Heat Race and just didn’t advance then I was buried in the B-Main. In the B I was good. I had a shot at (Ryan) Susice and I showed my nose probably too early and he took my lane away.”

“I figured if we could get in the show we had a car capable of running in the top-10,” Turner added. “That’s Sprint Car racing. Some nights it’s just not your night.”

On Tuesday, the team took on the World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series in the Six Nations Showdown. Another tough draw put Turner as the last car to qualify in the first qualifying flight and forced him to start at the rear of his heat. In the B-Main, he drove from 11th to 7th.

“It’s pretty cool,” Turner said of racing against the Outlaws. “I liked in the Heat Race when I drove around Kraig Kinser. It’s fun going out to time trial by yourself too. It’s the only race that we run all year that’s like it. It’s really good recognition.”

Turner and his Hill’s Racing team were able to gain valuable information for their notes on a Monday track that was similar to the track conditions often experienced at the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals.

“I was really happy with my car in the B-Main,” said Turner. “We went from 11th to 7th and we were half a second behind fifth.
