(Photo by Dale Calnan/Image Factor Media).

MERLIN, Ont. – (June 9, 2018) – Shone Evans took advantage of his front row starting position to take the lead from polesitter Holly Porter on a lap 11 restart and was mistake-free around the tight but racey South Buxton Raceway over the final nine laps to score victory in the Action Sprint Tour powered by RaceRivalz.com’s inaugural visit to the Merlin, Ont. 1/3-mile oval.

The victory was also Evans’ second straight win with the Action Sprint Tour powered by RaceRivalz.com following his victory at Merrittville Speedway back on May 21.

Evans and Porter started on the front row for the 20-lap Feature event. The two drivers claimed the front row starting spots via the redraw after each finished in the top two of their respective heat races. Both drivers elected to keep their front row starting spot and declined to take the Durnin Motors Front Row challenge and drop to the 12th starting spot for a chance at a $500 bonus if they could score the win.

At the drop of the green flag, Porter jumped out to an early advantage in her No.1, but was reeled in by a lap one caution when fourth-starting Aaron Turkey was involved in an opening lap incident that caused a flat right-rear tire and a broken nose wing. The team went to the work area and successfully replaced the tire, but returned to the track with damage still to the nose wing.

When the race returned to green, Porter maintained the lead up front while several drivers made their moves from the middle of the back to the front, including Ryan Hunsinger who charged forward from 12th to finish fourth and Al Gilletta Jr., who earned the night’s Hard Charger award in his No.22, by driving from the dead last 22nd starting position to claim a 12-place finish.

Porter paced the field to the halfway point, but saw her lead evaporate as the caution flag waved after the completion of lap 10 when Turkey hit an infield implement tire that resulted in significant damage to the car’s front end and ended his night early.

The ensuing restart gave Evans all the track position he needed to take a shot at the lead and he made the most of it. Evans grabbed the lead from Porter on lap 11 and then held off Porter over the final nine laps to secure the victory. Porter earned the runner-up spot while St. Thomas, Ont. driver Jesse Costa recorded his third-straight podium finish on the tour with a third-place finish. Hunsinger and 10th starting Jerry Hill rounded out the top-five.

Evans, Costa and Jacob Dykstra were heat race winners earlier in the night.

Action Sprint Tour officials would like to thank the management at South Buxton Raceway for their commitment to race the program despite afternoon rains in the area and at the racetrack. The Action Sprint Tour looks forward to working with South Buxton Raceway again in 2019.

The Action Sprint Tour powered by RaceRivalz.com returns to action on Father’s Day Sunday, June 17 to make its debut appearance at Humberstone Speedway in Port Colborne, Ont.
Action Sprint Tour Heads West For First Appearance at South Buxton on June 9

By Clayton Johns

OHSWEKEN, Ont. (June 6, 2018) – The Action Sprint Tour powered by RaceRivalz.com is set to add another piece to its history books when the upstart tour visits South Buxton Raceway in Merlin, Ont. for the first time on Saturday, June 9. The Tour got off to an action-packed start as it logged two races into the history books at Ohsweken and Merrittville speedways last month with no fewer than 25 cars in attendance at each show.

In the Series’ inaugural race at Ohsweken on May 18, Aaron Turkey out-paced Jesse Costa to become the first-ever winner in the Series’ history. Behind the top two, youngster DJ Christie ran from the 20th starting spot to a third-place finish while Hagersville driver Lucas Smith and Scotland’s Shone Evans rounded out the top-five.

Three days later, the Tour shifted its focus to the Niagara Peninsula and Merrittville Speedway on May 21. There, it was Evans who claimed the win over Brad Herron, while Costa was on the podium for the second-straight race with a third-place finish. Turkey finished fourth while his teammate Holly Porter was fifth.

Now, the Action Sprint Tour powered by RaceRivalz.com gets set to focus on the 1/3-mile track at South Buxton Raceway near Chatham, Ontario. South Buxton marks the third of five tracks the Series will visit in 2018. The Action Sprint Tour cars have never raced at South Buxton, but several drivers have experience on the tricky track in other Sprint Car competition.

During the first race of the season, the Action Sprint Tour powered by RaceRivalz.com announced the creation of the Durnin Motors Front Row Challenge. At each race in 2018, one of the two drivers who is scheduled to start on the front row for the 20-lap Feature has the option to drop back to the 12th starting spot. Should they win from that starting spot, they’ll earn a $500 bonus from Durnin Motors. No driver elected to take the challenge at Ohsweken or Merrittville, which opens the door for one driver to make another piece of history at South Buxton.

Entering this Saturday’s event, Turkey is the current Series point leader with a gap of just two points over Costa and Evans, who sit tied for second. Jerry Hill and Hannah Ferrell round out the top-five through two races. Brad Herron, Rob Neely, Holly Porter, Steven Beckett and Brian Nanticoke occupy top-10 spots thus far.

While several teams have already registered for the Series’ inaugural campaign, teams who have not yet registered can fill out the Action Sprint Tour powered by RaceRivalz.com forms by clicking here. The $75 registration fee comes with several benefits for drivers, including admission to all events at the track’s member price and allows drivers to compete for a $7,250 point fund and up to $2,500 in bonuses. Drivers can submit their registration online and pay the $75 registration fee at the track on June 9.

For additional information on the Action Sprint Tour powered by RaceRivalz.com, including a full break down of the Series’ 2018 point fund and race purses as well as series rules, visit www.ActionSprintTour.com.

2018 Action Sprint Tour powered by RaceRivalz.com Schedule
Fri.
Jake Hooker Storms To August After Four Podium Finishes In July

CHATHAM-KENT, Ont. – August 5, 2016 – Jake Hooker continued his impressive rookie season in the UMP Late Model division at South Buxton Raceway as the 15-year-old driver finished on the podium four times in July. Hooker is now set for another busy month with four more races scheduled for August.

To date, he’s run 11 events at South Buxton and has finished in the top-five nine times.

“We’ve had a good couple of weeks. We had a couple of rough nights too with tearing up equipment, but we always manage to focus on the car and come back,” Hooker said.

The only night he didn’t finish in the top three last month was on July 23 when he made a last lap blunder that proved a valuable learning experience. Hooker tried to pass two cars on the final lap while running with the leaders, but the car didn’t stick with the extra momentum and he spun.

“I thought if I could throw it in hard enough, I could go by them, but there wasn’t any bite where I was driving. I learned a lot. There’s a lot of horsepower when you go into the corner. I scared myself because I through it in really hard,” Hooker laughed. “I learned a lot of safety stuff and I learned where my limits are.”

Hooker, who will start grade 11 in September, has noticed his own improvements since his May debut in South Buxton’s top division. There’s no shortage of veteran talent for him to learn against, either.

“I tell people it’s the top dog class. I’m racing against the Michael Jordans of South Buxton racing,” Hooker explained.

“I really enjoyed racing with the top guys. On opening night, they would pull away from me. Now, I’m sticking with them. It’s cool to race against those guys and see how much respect is given. It’s all coming along. It’s a slow process.”

To help with his development, Hooker has been reviewing footage from an onboard Go Pro camera. It offers a different perspective of the race for the Chatham teenager.

“It’s crazy to see all of the car, your hand movements and what you should have done. When you’re in the racecar, you don’t see how much room you have to the wall. It’s crazy to see all that stuff, ,” Hooker said. “My dad (Kirk), Andrew (Rheaume) and Matt Wauthier have all given me pointers as well.”

With his recent success, but also simply as a racecar driver, Hooker has developed a handful of routine he follows meticulously on raceday. After some early Saturday morning work, Hooker then heads to the shop for a final inspection on his car. From there it’s time for a short swim and then a shower before getting dressed. On the way to the track, the Hooker team stops at the same truck stop where he fills the cooler with precisely two bags of ice. It doesn’t end there.

“I am the worst for superstitions,” laughed Hooker. “I wear the exact same things every week. I put a certain amount of tearoffs on (my visor).”

He hopes his quirky routine will help him earn his first win next month. Hooker knows it’s up to him once he gets on the racetrack and feels the checkered flag is within reach.

“I really want to get that first win. We’ve been so close so many times. We’re pushing for that win, knocking on its door,” Hooker said confidently. “We got second last weekend, second once before. We’ve had some bad luck, but we’re right there.”

For now, he’ll continue to work with the help of his dedicated crew that includes his dad Kirk, mom Dianne, sister Taylor, Andrew Rheaume, Matt Wauthier and Derian Wauthier. Perhaps the blood, sweat and tears from a committed team will produce a bit of glory sometime soon.

SEASON STATS

Jake Hooker 2016 Season – 11 Races: 0 Wins, 9 Top-5s, 11 Top-10s

GET HOOKED!
Follow Jake Hooker’s rookie Super Late Model season at the following links

Facebook: facebook.com/JakeHookerMotorsports
Twitter: @Jake_Hooker38
Schedule: www.southbuxtonraceway.ca/schedule.

Jake Hooker would like to thank his dedicated corporate sponsors who support his 2016 UMP Super Late Model, including: Country View Golf Course, Triple P Farms, Profota’s Garage, AP Engines, Harris, Vertec Contractors Ltd., Churchill Transport, Steve’s Pizzeria, Waddick Fuels, Ray-Mac Auto Parts, Xtreme Bodies by Hook, RPM Design, Five Star Racecars, Westside, Inside Track Motorsport News, Spira Fire Protection, Chatham Outdoor and Pedal, Leaf Racewear, Drum Chip Inc, and Clayton Johns Media.

The Chatham-Kent teenager has been nothing short of impressive during his debut UMP Late Model campaign at the Merlin, Ont. track.

Hooker narrowly missed his first career win in a Late Model on June 18, but still earned a career-best finish of second to go along with a pair of fourth-place finishes on June 11 and June 25.

“We were really close to a win. We had a green-white-checkered finish. The first restart they said that I jumped and it was a really close call,” Hooker explained. “We did another restart and it was pretty close. (Jim Dale Jr.) didn’t pull away from me. It was a good race.”

Hooker has the benefit of a strong crew to prepare his Triple P Farms/Profota’s Garage/AP Engines No.38. Led by his father and former South Buxton racer, Kirk Hooker, as well as Matt Wauthier, Darrian Wauthier and John DeForest, Jake knows he has an impressive car under his seat. Hooker’s mom, Dianne, and sister, Taylor, provide plenty of support as well.

“We have a car capable of winning. Now it’s on the driver, it’s on me. The guns all loaded, I just have to pull the trigger,” Hooker said confidently. “I’ve learned a lot, especially how to drive these corners in a big horsepower car. It’s all a learning curve.”

With all of his early success, it’s easy to forget Hooker is just 15 years old. The Ursuline College student just finished grade 10 and admits there’s still plenty of nerves for him that don’t meet the eye of fans in the grandstand.

“The nerves are still with me. The line-up chute just kills me. You’re the rookie and you look beside you and you have your home track heroes. Sitting in the car still gets me nervous, but that’s to be expected,” said Hooker, adding the horsepower in the car still keeps him up on the wheel.

“When you really hit the gas, the car just shoots like a rocket ship. It’s unbelievable. I don’t really know how to explain it,” he added.

As the calendar flips to July, Hooker has written his final exams for the school year and is excited to focus his attention on racing. With the excitement of his new venture this year, racing had started to fill the youngster’s notebook.

“It was basically like Talladega Nights. I have pretty decent grades, but I was drawing the racecar, drawing the racetrack, and watching videos of South Buxton on the computer,” Hooker said with a laugh.

Hooker spends time during the week reviewing video to get another view of what’s happening while he’s in the car. He’s committed to improving, but also recognizes his achievements thus far are satisfying through his first two months of Late Model racing.

“These top-fives we’re getting are awesome. The team and I are all happy,” Hooker said. “We’ve passed drivers that are the Jimmy Johnson’s and Dale Earnhardt’s of South Buxton. Those are wins in themselves.”

Hooker is set for a busy month of racing at South Buxton with Mid-Season championships on July 9 and the Quad Memorial night on July 23. Half-price admission night is on July 30.
Jake Hooker Claims Pair of Top-Fives In First Three Late Model Starts

CHATHAM-KENT, Ont. – June 1, 2016 – Jake Hooker’s rookie season in a UMP Late Model at South Buxton Raceway is going exactly according to plan. Actually, it’s gone better. The 15-year-old youngster drove his Triple P Farms/Profota’s Garage/AP Engines No.38 to third- and fourth-place finishes to score two top-five finishes in his first three starts. His worst finish was an impressive sixth on May 21.

“I’ve definitely exceeded what I was planning to and what my parents thought I was going to do. I didn’t think I would be contending. I thought I would be just running laps, not trying to win races,” Hooker says.

The reigning Sport Stock champion at South Buxton has noticed more than a couple of differences in moving up to his 800 horsepower Late Model.

“It’s not like a Sport Stock,” Hooker joked. “You have to be smooth on the throttle. You can’t mash (the pedal) to the floor. There’s a lot of horsepower going to the tires.”

It didn’t take long for Hooker to notice how the horsepower translates to speed, either.

“There’s a lot of good parts to Late Model racing. My favourite part has to be the competition and the speed. From Sport Stock to this is a jump. It’s like going from a small airplane to a rocket ship. The straightaways are so fast and they feel so short,” comments Hooker with a laugh.

Even with his early season success, Hooker knows he still have a long way to go. It will be a season of determined learning for the smart Chatham-Kent teenager. He took an unscheduled opportunity to learn from the defending track champion, Dale Glassford, earlier this month.

“Dale passed me and I kind of got to follow him. I figured out where I’ve been bobbling. I figured out I haven’t been cutting the corners where I should be. It’s all the little tips, like where to pick-up your momentum,” Hooker explains.

The learning curve is steep, but Hooker has it under control with the help of a supportive family, team and sponsorship base.

“I didn’t feel as confident as I was in my Sport Stock because I’m the small fish in a big pond. After I got out there and started racing, I’m starting to gain my confidence back and get in to the groove. It’s still going to take me a while to get everything,” Hooker remarks.

“My sponsors are good with that because it’s my first time (in a Late Model) and they understand. My family’s great at backing me up and understanding it,” adds Hooker.

Jake Hooker is gearing up for a busy month with four consecutive nights of racing. The month of racing concludes on June 25 with the Don Hendricks Memorial for the UMP Late Models at South Buxton, a prestigious event Hooker already has marked on his calendar.

“The memorial races are big at South Buxton like they are at any track. To win a Memorial race is a big deal. I won a few last year and it’s heartfelt because the family is there. They’re so proud because you can feel that he’s in your presence,” remarks Hooker honestly.

Keep up with Jake Hooker’s rookie Super Late Model season online by Liking his official Facebook page at Facebook.com/JakeHookerMotorsports and on Twitter by following @Jake_Hooker38.
Jake Hooker Eager To Begin Rookie Super Late Model Campaign

CHATHAM-KENT, Ont. (May 6, 2016) – After a long and sometimes slow off-season, Jake Hooker is ready to hit full-speed this weekend at South Buxton Raceway. This year, however, the Chatham-Kent teenager will be in a new seat with significantly more power under the hood of his Country View Golf Course/Triple P Farms/Vertec Contractors No.38.

Hooker is moving up to the UMP Super Late Model division at South Buxton from the track’s Sport Stock division for the 2016 season and following in the footsteps of his father, Kirk Hooker, who raced Late Models both on dirt and asphalt.

“I’ve got racing fever. I’ve been drawing a lot of racecars in my notebook lately. I’m excited to move up in to the new class and see my new competitors,” said the 10th grade student at Ursuline College/The Pines in Chatham.

The difference between the two cars is significant. The Super Late Model is a full 400lbs. lighter with nearly 850 horsepower under the hood, compared to the 500hp of his former Sport Stock.

Hooker knows there will be bumps during his transition to the fastest type of stock car on dirt. He has an impressive support group to help him through the adjustment. Jake will lean heavily on advice and support from his father as well as Andrew Rheaume, and crew member Matt Wauthier. Rheaume was the first Canadian to qualify for Eldora Speedway’s prestigious World 100. His mother, Dianne, has also been there to provide support every step of the way.

“Obviously my dad, he’s been there through think and thin. Andrew has been a big help to me through Sport Stock and now in to Late Model. My crew guy Matt Wauthier raced Late Models.”

“He talks to my dad and they figure out the best way to discuss stuff with me. I have good people around me,” Hooker explained in anticipation of Saturday’s season opener.

While the two cars are significantly different, Hooker will still be able to use the experience he gained over his previous two seasons behind the wheel of a full-size stock car.

“The main things I learned in Sport Stock were car control, how to properly pass people and pick-up points for the throttle,” Hooker said. “The pick-up points are going to be different now, but at least I have a starting point. You learn how to be patient.”

The 15-year-old pilot knows he will also have to adapt to new drivers on track with him this season, but has been watching old races to get a feel for the competition. In doing so, Hooker has set expectations for his rookie Super Late Model season.

“I want to win two features this year and five heat races. We don’t want to set anything too big, but it’s something to focus on,” he said.

The team will concentrate its efforts on South Buxton in 2016 with a handful of trips south of the border on Hooker’s radar. Hooker has circled a few dates on his calendar this season, but for now, his focus is on the first green flag.

“I always like the memorial races and the Canadian Fall Shootout, I’m looking forward to that one,” he said. “I’ve mostly been focusing on Opening Night. It’s a big night.”

Keep up with Jake Hooker’s rookie Super Late Model season online by Liking his official Facebook page at Facebook.com/JakeHookerMotorsports and on Twitter by following @Jake_Hooker38.

Jake Hooker’s 2016 UMP Super Late Model season is supported by several dedicated corporate sponsors, including: Country View Golf Course, Triple P Farms, Profota’s Garage, AP Engines, Harris, Vertec Contractors Ltd., Churchill Transport, Steve’s Pizzeria, Waddick Fuels, Ray-Mac Auto Parts, Xtreme Bodies by Hook, RPM Design, Five Star Racecars, Westside, Inside Track Motorsport News, Spira Fire Protection, Chatham Outdoor and Pedal, Leaf Racewear, Drum Chip Inc, and Clayton Johns Media.

Prepared By Clayton Johns Media
claytonjohns@hotmail.com

But one thing was missing from his mantelpiece – a feature win trophy. The owner of Ohsweken Speedway finally conquered South Buxton on Saturday night with his first career feature win on the 3/8th-mile ‘D-shaped’ oval in front of a crowd of more than 2,000 fans for the Southern Ontario Sprints.

“This track is so difficult to drive, I told my crew chief (Steve Moulton) last night, I was practicing in my mind how I was going to run, and it’s that corner that hassles you every time you come here,” Styres said, pointing to turn four and the entrance to the sweeping front stretch of the ‘D.’ “Tonight, Steve had it set up right, the car was sweet to drive,” Styres said. The SOS points leader started inside on the second row and passed Ridgetown’s Adam West for second on lap five and began his chase of St. Thomas’s Justin Martin, who led from the drop of the green.

Styres was making up ground on the outside when the race’s only caution waved on lap 12 for Hamilton’s Frank Baranowski, who went off the track between turns one and two. After the restart, Styres continued to stalk Martin on the high side and needed just four laps to take the lead on the back straightaway and drove away over the final nine circuits for his first SOS win of the year.

“I was aiming at that light (turn four) and I’d catch the cushion up there and just ride it out around the ‘D,’ ” Styres described how he chased down Martin. “I’m used to running on the outside, it was pretty sticky up there, but I’ll tell you, the car was pretty good everywhere,” said Styres. “I don’t know what kind of lead I had,” he continued, “but it was fun out here tonight … we had a great track, it was amazing.”

Martin said he didn’t know how big of a lead he had over Styres when the caution waved, which was timely as the leaders were just about to catch the tail end of the field. “I didn’t hear anybody,” Martin said of his lead. “The caution gave us a clean track with no one in front of us, but I just couldn’t hold on. “You have to give him credit,” Martin said of Styres. “He drove the wheels off that thing, he earned it tonight.”

It was virtually a photo finish for third as Brantford’s Mitch Brown was given the position over Tilbury’s Kyle Patrick. Brown owned the third spot since lap eight before Patrick made a pass on the final lap. But as they came across the line side-by-side, Brown got a run on the inside and was awarded the position by the South Buxton track scorers. “I screwed up,” Brown said about losing the position briefly to Patrick. “I thought I had something for them the first 12-13 laps but the car was never the same after the caution,” he said. Patrick put up a mild protest before accepting his fourth-place finish. “I thought I had him, I didn’t see him at the end,” Patrick said. “It was probably my error, I was coming through three and four and let it float up to the high side and obviously he had a good run off the bottom and was able to motor up beside me. “I guess if I would have got it to the bottom and shut the door and it wouldn’t be an issue,” he said.

Shawn Sliter, of Port Colborne, rounded out the top five as all 14 starters finished the 25-lap feature. Styres added to his heat-race checkered flag collection by leading all eight laps of the second heat while Patrick passed Sutton’s Bob Crawford on lap three and led the final five circuits to win the first heat.

Mitch Brown took the series point standing lead on Friday night at Ohweken Speedway. However, Glenn Styres victory put him back in the lead by a slim 4 point margin heading to Brighton this Saturday. The SOS will return to South Buxton on Saturday, Aug. 2.

Entries (14 cars)
(Number Name - Hometown)
0 Glenn Styres – Ohsweken, ON
2 Brad Lodge – Stouffville, ON
5 Keith Dempster – Alton, ON
7m Justin Martin – St. Thomas, ON
10 Bob Crawford – Sutton, ON
10b Mitch Brown – Brantford, ON
11j Chris Jones – Demorestville, ON
15 Mike Ferrell – London, ON
21J John Burbridge - Simcoe, ON
25 Warren Mahoney – Lefroy, ON
30 Adam West - Ridgetown, ON
33k Kyle Patrick - Tilbury, ON
66 Frank Baranowski – Hamilton, ON
71s Shawn Sliter – Port Colborne, ON

Heat #1 Results (8 laps)
1. 33k Kyle Patrick (6)
2. 10b Mitch Brown (5)
3. 11j Chris Jones (3)
4. 71s Shawn Sliter (4)
5. 10 Bob Crawford (2)
6. 66 Frank Baranowski (1)

Heat #2 Results (8 laps)
1. 0 Glenn Styres (2)
2. 7m Justin Martin (6)
3. 30 Adam West (5)
4. 15 Mike Ferrell (1)
5. 5 Keith Dempster (7)
6. 21j John Burbridge (4)
7. 2 Brad Lodge (3)
8. 25 Warren Mahoney (8* DNS Heat 1)

A-Main Results (25 laps)
1. 0 Glenn Styres (3)
2. 7m Justin Martin (2)
3. 10b Mitch Brown (6)
4. 33k Kyle Patrick (4)
5. 71s Shawn Sliter (7)
6. 11j Chris Jones (5)
7. 5 Keith Dempster (10)
8. 30 Adam West (1)
9. 15 Mike Ferrell (8)
10. 10 Bob Crawford (9)
11. 21j John Burbridge (12)
12. 2 Brad Lodge (13)
13. 25 Warren Mahoney (14)
14. 66 Frank Baranowski (11)

The Southern Ontario Sprints would like to thank their 2014 partners: Speedway Motors, Wiseco Pistons, Klotz Synthetic Lubricants, The National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum, ImageFactor.ca, Kreitz Oval Track Parts, Canadian Motorsports Expo, Sanderson’s Automotive and OnDirt.ca

Find The Southern Ontario Sprints online at: www.southernontariosprints.com
Follow The Southern Ontario Sprints on Twitter: @sossprints
Like The Southern Ontario Sprints on Facebook: www.facebook.com/SouthernOntarioSprints
