Rick Spencer-Walt Wrecked out of Electric City 167 at Peterborough
PETERBOROUGH, Ontario — Rick Spencer-Walt was on his way to having a solid run in the Electric City 167 as part of Peterborough Speedway’s Autumn Colours Classic when he wrecked out by a fellow competitor.

Spencer-Walt started off the weekend by timing in at 13.717 seconds to qualify 10th for the event, which was meant to be a combined race with both Pro Late Models and Limited Late Models. Although he qualified his Limited Late Model, he would forfeit his starting position when the decision was made to bring out the Pro Late Model instead.

Starting at the tail of the field, he would get alongside Derek Lynch for 11th on Lap 5. He would complete the pass, followed by getting by Mike Wallace for 10th four laps later. He would continue moving forward, making his way up to the ninth position by Lap 12 before the first caution four laps later.

Restarting eighth after a fellow competitor pitted, he would initially move up to seventh, but faded back to eighth by Lap 30. With there being a lot of laps remaining, the field would string out single-file, but Spencer-Walt continued to still make up ground, moving into seventh by the halfway mark.

Under the halfway mark fuel caution, if you just took fuel and handled driver comfort, you would keep your position for the restart. If you chose to do something other than that, you would restart at the back of the field. This would shuffle the grid for the restarts big time.

Following the restart, Spencer-Walt began to move forward, moving into sixth by Lap 87, followed by avoiding a spinning competitor a lap later to move up to fifth. Restarting inside the top-five, he would get up to fourth on the restart and remained there until he was passed on Lap 112. He would continue to fall back, ultimately running eighth with 37 laps to go.

As the laps wound down, he was caught by fellow competitor Dan McHattie, with McHattie tapping the back end of the No. 31w Late Model entering turn three on Lap 135, causing Spencer-Walt to make significant contact with the wall. Spencer-Walt was credited with a 17th-place finish.

The Eldon Wallis-owned team is proud to be supported by Gohydrovac.ca, Jim Wilson Chevrolet, Auto Trim Design, Byer’s Equipment Motorsports, Orser Technical Services, Heidi’s RV Superstore, GreenSteelRoof.ca, HOTC, Speedy Auto Glass Orillia, Frame Shop Huntsville, Speedy Auto Machine, Red Castle Performance, and EPIC Racewear.

Keep up with Rick Spencer-Walt and Spencer-Walt Motorsports by liking their facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Walt-Motorsports/524817640964689?fref=ts and following Rick Spencer-Walt on twitter at https://twitter.com/Rwalt31.

Press Release by Ashley McCubbin/AM Marketing – ashleymccubbin17@gmail.com

He’d drop back two spots to 10th by Lap 17, set to ride in line until he was caught up in another driver’s incident at Lap 23. He’d make his way down pit road, with the ADAMS Motorsports pit crew changing the flat tire before sending him back out.

Restarting at the tail of the field, he’d avoid incident on the first attempts at a restart, before spinning to avoid contact on the third attempt. Due to spinning to avoid, he’d be given back the 10th position where he was running. For one of those teams, part of their dream season came to fruition with the simple wave of the green flag to kick-off the 40 lap feature event, as Stittsville, Ontario’s Matt Haufe captured the Eastern, Western and All-Ontario tour championships by rolling across the line at the start of the race.

Front row starters Andre Fiorini and Wes Cuthbertson paced the Trailers Plus Ontario Legends starting field to the line for their 40 lap ‘A’ main. Fiorini – who won the first 2 races of his career earlier this season at Sunset Speedway – had as much as a 10 car advantage as the pack started to catch the tail end of the field with 11 laps complete. Reigning series champion Matt Haufe moved into 2nd and was closing on the leader in lapped traffic, before taking over the top spot with 24 laps on the board.

Haufe and Fiorini swapped positions during an aggressive series of crossover moves as everyone fought to gain positions in the running order. A pair of yellow flags – both for incidents in the 2nd turn – on lap 27 and 37 tightened the field, allowing Kevin Foisy to take over the top spot and hang on for the win. Wes Cuthbertson, Haufe, Adam Cuthbertson and Dave Riopelle completed the top 5.

Terry McClelland, Bryan Batty, Dawson Drimmie, Robin Jongen, Kenny McNicol, Shane Pollock, Hayden Brown, Joe Sherman, Jeremy Coulter, Fiorini, Rick Eades, Paul Pierik, Andrew Massey, Cory Richardson, Luke Atkins, Jeff Forsey, Don Arnott, Ron Gibbons, Joe Adams, Gregory Rudzik, Cole McFadden and Brandon Thurlby rounded-out the running order.

Finishing positions are unofficial and subject to scoring review and post race inspection.

Trailers Plus Ontario Legends Series notebook: Late in the event, Shane Pollock made hard contact with the front stretch wall.
Feature Events Highlight the Final Day of the 26th Autumn Colours Classic

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

There was a little bit of everything during the 26th running of the Autumn Colours Classic – presented by Lucas Oil Products – at Peterborough Speedway. From cool Fall nights, to rainy afternoons and exciting action on the race track. This year’s edition had it all. Everything wrapped-up Sunday, October 7th with the final events for 7 different divisions that also served to clinch a trio of 2018 season championships.

Glenn Watson and Brandon Watson brought the Hoosier Racing Tire Ontario Outlaw Super Late Model starting field to the line to kick-off the day’s schedule. With 75 laps to settle the score, the family reunion was the perfect kick-off to a Thanksgiving Sunday of action. Glenn Watson took the lead early, but his nephew was working the inside line and claimed the top spot with 4 laps on the board. A yellow flag – for a backstretch incident – slowed the pace with 8 complete, but Watson was able to hold onto the lead and started working through the backmarkers at lap 15. With the pack running some strong, consistent laps Brandon Watson built-up a solid lead. A lap 37 caution – that turned into a red flag – for a 3rd turn crash that ended the day for Jordan Howse. The turning point of the event came along with a lap 60 caution. Watson’s car had been sputtering and he took the #9 ride to the pits. Glenn Watson took the lead on the restart, with the former Autumn Colours winner now working through traffic from the rear of the field. Glenn Watson took the $2500 win. Gary McLean – in his first career Super Late Model start – was second. Ryan Kimball, Brandon Watson and Gary Passer completed the top 5.

2018 track champion Ryan Oosterholt and Kris Khan brought the 28 car Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock starting field to the line for a 40 lap ‘A’ main. Oosterholt took an early lead, with Khan glued to his back bumper. The pace was slowed early, for a 4th turn issue with 6 laps complete. Oosterholt kept control of the pack on the restart, with a quartet of Peterborough Speedway regulars making-up the top 5. The #57 machine was working through the lapped traffic to perfect, all the while keeping Khan at bay. Not even a pair of late race caution flags – both for incidents in the 3rd – could keep deny him his first Autumn Colours win. Khan, Chris Tubman, Corey Strawn and Kyle Neumeister followed Oosterholt across the line.

Brandon Watson and Ryan Kimball were on the front row for the inaugural running of the Electric City 167. Watson set the early pace, with former NASCAR Pinty’s Series champion Cayden Lapcevich on his tail. The pair broke away from the field and had things well in control through the race’s first yellow flags on the 23rd and 64th laps. Lapcevich – who kept looking for a way around Watson – found it on a lap 67 restart, only to give the position back 4 laps later. A yellow flag for a 2nd turn issue led to the competition caution and gave teams the chance to refuel and check tires. Watson held the lead on the restart and worked his way around the slower traffic. While Cayden Lapcevich started to fade in the late stages, JR Fitzpatrick and Kimball mounted a charge to the front. The #84 took over 2nd after a lap 135 restart but surrendered it to Kimball less than 20 laps later. Each driver tried, but they could wrestle the race win from Watson. Lapcevich held on for 4th, with Ron Sheridan 5th.

With 50 laps of action on the table, Justin Holmes and Brandon Passer brought the Super Stock field to the Great Canadian RV green flag. The front row starters broke away from the pack, but there was plenty of action going on behind them. A hard-charging Dan Archibald – who started 7th – had made it up to 4th with just over a handful of laps complete. Several yellow flags prevented teams from finding their rhythm and a red – for a multi-car wreck in the first turn – created a 10 lap shootout for all the marbles. As the checkered flag flew, the initial front row starters were first across the line. Holmes and Passer were followed by Jason Lawrence, Matt Bentley and Ken Grubb to round-out the Super Stock top 5.

With the 2018 season point championship up for grabs, a pair of local favourites – John Baker Jr. and Kelly Balson – paced the OSCAAR Modified from the staging area for the 50 lap main event. JBJ took the lead early, with Balson looking to steal the spot; which he did by the 7th circuit. The first yellow flag flew a lap later, with title contender John Harper taking the 3rd spot on the restart. As lead duo ran through the backmarkers on lap 15, Harper took over 2nd. Caution flags on the 23rd and 32nd laps helped write a fresh page in the championship story, as Harper pitted to change a flat tire on lap 33. Cory Horner moved into 2nd as the lap counter showed 34 complete and survived a lap 37 red flag that blocked the entrance to the 1st turn. Even though he couldn’t keep Balson from an Autumn Colours Classic win, Horner captured the 2018 OSCAAR Modified title. Baker Jr., Shawn Chenoweth and AJ Emms were next across the line.

Andy Kamrath and Ryan Oosterholt showed the Jiffy Lube Mini Stock field the quick way around Canada’s Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval. Coming from 5th at the drop of the green, Warren Paxton made his way into the top 3 with a hat-trick of laps on the board. A red flag for a hard wreck in the 3rd turn brought things to a halt to check on drivers and clean-up the scene. On the restart, Paxton would continue his pursuit of Oosterholt – who was following Kamrath through the lapped traffic. After a lap 43 yellow flag for a 3rd turn issue, he was able to complete move but didn’t have enough time to catch Kamrath. Oosterholt, Nolan Gould and Corey Young were next across the stripe.

Matt Haufe moved into 2nd and was closing on the leader in lapped traffic, before taking over the top spot with 24 laps on the board. A pair of yellow flags – both for incidents in the 2nd turn – on lap 27 and 37 tightened the running order and allowed Kevin Foisy to take the win. Wes Cuthbertson, Haufe, Adam Cuthbertson and Dave Riopelle completed the top 5. Just by taking the green flag, Haufe clinched the 2018 Eastern, Western and All Ontario Legends Series championships.

All posted finishing positions are unofficial and subject to scoring review as well as post-race safety and technical inspection.

Bullring bullet points: A solid crowd help push the days 50/50 draw jackpot to nearly $1635.00, with Jim Robbins of Frankford, Ontario taking home the cash…Peterborough Speedway will conclude its 2018 schedule – Sunday, October 14th – with an afternoon of snowmobile and ATV radar runs and grass drags, presented by Lucas Oil Products. Bill Heatherton and Kevin Taylor brought the field to the green flag, with Taylor grabbing the early lead. His time at the front of the field was short-lived as the #15 of Jayden Riddle took over with just 3 laps on the scoreboard. Riddle hung-on for the win, with Daniel Hawn, Norm Newman, Ryan Battilana and James Stanley rounding-out the top 5. Just by starting the first feature, Hawn clinched the 2018 OSCAAR Pro Sprint point championship.

Next on the agenda was the second round of qualifying heats for the Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stocks, with Kyle Neumeister, Cory Strawn, Ryan Oosterholt and Kris Khan sharing the checkered flags. 2-time Autumn Colours champion Jessica James scored a pair of Outlaw Midget preliminary rounds, with the others going to Nigel Buttivant and Mike Bradley.

OSCAAR Modified qualifiers went to John Harper, Anthony DiBello and Chris Milwain; while Colton Everingham, Matt Bentley, Frank Davey and Justin Holmes each picked-up a win during the second round of Super Stock heat race action.

‘B’ Main, last-chance qualifiers were needed to set the final starting spots in Sunday’s Jiffy Lube Mini Stock and Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock finals. Isaac Dippel, Gil Brooks, Robert Greenfield and Terry Woodley wheeled their way into the Mini Stock feature, with 2-time former track champion Jeremy Kelly, Russell Couture, Joshua Munro and Stephen Bierworth were added to the Bone Stock feature line-up.

Norman Newman and Daniel Hawn brought the OSCAAR Pro Sprint field to the line for their second 20 lap feature event. Hawn grabbed the lead early and would never relinquish the spot. At one point, he had nearly a straightaway lead over his closest competition. Jayden Riddle, Ryan Battilana, Newman and James Stanley followed Hawn across the line.

Following several practice sessions, the starting fields for the Hoosier Racing Tire Ontario Outlaw Super Late Model and Electric City 167 main events were set by time trials. Going away from the front row in the 75 lap Super Late Model feature will be Glenn Watson and his nephew Brandon Watson, while Brandon Watson and Ryan Kimball will lead the field to the green flag in the Limited Late Model/Pro Late Model headline event.

Saturday’s final order of business was a 25 lap feature for the Outlaw Midgets, with Ryan Brown and Jody Bound on the front row. Bound took and early lead, but it wasn’t long before Jessica James became a factor. The driver of the #2 machine was looking high and low in her march to the front and took the lead with 11 laps on the scoreboard. Just when it looked like she’d claim another Autumn Colours Classic win, she coasted to a stop on the track apron. Jordan Howse took control from there and scored the win. Bound, Adam Carrothers, Nigel Buttivant and Amanda McColl completed the top 5.

All posted race results are unofficial, pending scoring review and post-race technical and safety inspection.

Bullring bullet points: Saturday’s 50/50 payoff was worth $673.50 to Mike Ford of Walkerton, Ontario…Thanks to the co-operation of drivers, teams and visiting series officials, Peterborough Speedway staff was able to run off the second day’s events in a brisk fashion, leaving the Sunday schedule wide-open for main events. The combined Limited Late Model/Pro Late Model feature tilt is seen by many as the highlight of the 26th annual season ending spectacular. Track owner/promoter J.P. Josiasse says putting the 2 divisions together for a marquee affair makes good racing sense.

“These classes have become very similar over the last few years and we decided to give the fans an extra special race this year,” said Josiasse. “It’ll be a great show that the motorsports community has been talking about since we made the initial announcement a couple of weeks before the 2018 schedule was released.”

There’s no mistaking the value of experience when it comes to racing at the weekly short track level. Few teams are able to draw from a background of knowledge similar to the one available to the #32 Peterborough Speedway Late Model team of Wills Racing. A fixture in the sport at several different venues for 3 generations, driver Doug Wills from Orono, Ontario is grateful for the help and support in the form of used tires and parts he receives from some of the other drivers. He says he knows he can count on the effort his family-owned team brings to the track for every race.

“We might not have the same operating budget as some of the others in the pit area, but at this level everyone gets to play,” said Doug Wills. “My father Eric has been around the sport in one form or another since 1961 and he’s shared what he knows about stock car racing with me and I’ve been able to pass along that same level of commitment to hard work and dedication to my son Dylan to keep our team rolling over the years.”

The motorsports moment Central Ontario has been waiting for is coming up quickly. The 26th annual edition of the Autumn Colours Classic – presented by Lucas Oil Products – takes the green flag Friday, October 5th through Sunday, October 7th at Peterborough Speedway. The first order of business is practice and opening round qualifying for the Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock, Jiffy Lube Mini Stock, Super Stock, Trailers Plus Ontario Legend and OSCAAR Modified divisions. Also on-tap will be the Mini Stock and Super Stock Young Guns races, presented by APC Auto Parts.

Pit gates open at 10:00, with spectator grandstands unlocked at 5:00 and racing getting underway at 6:00. The 26th annual Autumn Colours Classic – presented by Lucas Oil Products – will go green October 5th to 7th at Canada’s Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval. Close to 10 racing divisions will tackle the track during the 3 day Thanksgiving Weekend.

“Just as the teams are going through their pre-race checklists, our promotional team is taking care of the final details to make sure we’re ready when the fans start coming through the gate,” said track owner and promoter J.P. Josiasse. “Even though this event has been part of the provincial motorsports calendar for more than a quarter of a century, you only get one chance to do things right.”

The year was 2013. Ryan Oosterholt took his place in the Peterborough Speedway record books by clinching the 4Fun/Bone Stock and Mini Stock track championships. Fast-forward to 2018 and the hard-charger from Blackstock, Ontario wrote a fresh page in track history with 3 championships in the same season, with titles in the Bone Stock, Mini Stock and Renegade Truck divisions.

“It was an all-around great season and I had a lot of fun,” said Oosterholt. “I have to thank the car owners, crew members, my family and friends for being there to help me jump from car-to-car so many times throughout the year. That can be half the battle but I had some amazing people around to make it a seamless transition.”

Even with his tremendous regular season success, an Autumn Colours Classic win is the one thing that has eluded Ryan Oosterholt’s grasp. He has come close in the past, but bad racing luck or mechanical issues have kept him from victory lane.
