Sheldon Haudenschild Survives Marathon Vegas Feature for Second Win of 2018

Haudenschild and SJM open 2018 Outlaw Season with two wins in four starts

LAS VEGAS, NV - February 28, 2017 - Sheldon Haudenschild and his new Stenhouse Jr.-Marshall racing are firing on all cylinders in 2018. Haudenschild assumed the lead after early leader Brian Brown slowed with a flat tire 10 laps in and held off veterans Donny Schatz and Tim Shaffer on numerous restarts to score the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory on Night 1 of the FVP Outlaw Showdown at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. 10th-starting Donny Schatz and 12th-starting Brad Sweet completed the podium.

FVP sponsored driver Brian Brown was vying for a perfect night after setting fast time in Flight B of Qualifying, dominating his Heat and winning the Craftsman Club Dash. Brown led the first 10 laps of the Feature before succumbing to a flat tire in turn four, bringing out the first of many cautions in the 30-lap Feature.

Haudenschild, who had closed in on Brown significantly before his tire blew, assumed the lead with Shaffer to his inside. The next four laps saw three cautions for three different drivers. By the halfway point, Haudenschild separated himself from Shaffer and 16th-starting David Gravel and worked his way into third. A lap later, Donny Schatz blasted underneath Gravel and Shaffer to secure second.

Willie Croft slowed to a stop bringing out the caution with Schatz to the inside of Haudenschild. Brent Marks spun on the ensuing restart, setting up a single-file restart. The next start Logan Schuchart hit the infield tire in turn four and Cory Eliason did the same thing on attempt number three of Lap 21. Schuchart and Eliason, who were both competing for a top-five finish, did not return.

Ian Madsen slowed with seven to go forcing an Open Red and giving Schatz one more chance to steal the win away from Sheldon. It was not meant to be as Haudenschild powered away on the restart and went on to win by 1.417 seconds.

When asked about the multitude of restarts, Haudenschild said, "It was difficult. On one hand, you are happy because you get a couple of laps with a free track, but it gets hard to jump in front of guys like Shaffer and Schatz on consecutive restarts."

"To get a win here, where I don't have a lot of laps is awesome," the Wooster, OH native added. After capturing the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award last season without winning a Feature, Haudenschild has now won two of the four World of Outlaws races completed to open 2018.

Schatz, who edged in front of Haudenschild on one of the Lap 20 restarts only to have it negated by another caution, said, "That's the way racing is," before adding, "It was a handful out there, but the guys gave me a great car and we will settle for second tonight."

Sweet, who quietly worked his way forward late in the race, was happy with third, "It was a marathon," the Grass Valley, CA native said with a grin. "I got up there early and made a few mistakes. Luckily, we had a good enough car to get back up there. We'll be back tomorrow and hopefully put on a better show."

Shaffer and Gravel held on to complete the top five with Jason Johnson, 21st-starting Kerry Madsen, Daryn Pittman, Brent Marks and Jason Meyers completing the top ten. Despite bringing out the caution with 10 laps remaining, Brent Marks still earned KSE Hard Charger honors coming back to finish ninth.

The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series returns to The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Thursday evening for the conclusion of the FVP Outlaw Showdown.
Schatz Gets Underneath Haudenschild Late to Win Third Feature of 2018 in FVP Outlaw Showdown at Las Vegas

Schatz, Haudenschild go one-two again, have combined for all five WoO Feature wins to open 2018

LAS VEGAS, NV - March 1, 2018 - Donny Schatz patiently chased Sheldon Haudenschild all Feature before taking the lead with five laps remaining to capture Night Two of the FVP Outlaw Showdown at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Haudenschild led 25 laps but settled for second to continue his torrid start to 2018 with David Gravel coming from 12th to complete the podium.

Texas native Aaron Reutzel, in search of his first career World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory, won the Craftsman Club Dash earning the pole, but it was Haudenschild getting the jump to lead lap one of the Feature. Schatz started fifth and began working the bottom of the speedway meticulously, yet effectively moving into third on lap six and by Reutzel into second one lap later.

Haudenschild's lead disappeared in traffic as he and the nine-time Series Champion were side by side at the line on lap 12. As the duo entered turn one, the lone Red Flag of the Feature halted action as Kerry Madsen got upside in turn two. Madsen walked away from the incident under his own power.

A lap 15 caution gave Schatz the opportunity to size up the Stenhouse Jr.-Marshall No. 17. The duo battled side-by-side for a pair of laps with the young Haudenschild pounding the cushion and the veteran Schatz smooth as can be on the bottom.

Two laps later, on another restart, Schatz slipped as far back as fifth but came back a man possessed and charged his way, on the bottom, back to the runner-up position in time for the final caution of the night, which flew on lap 22.

Haudenschild fended off Schatz for a trio of laps before lowering his line in turn three and four, allowing Schatz to get underneath him and lead lap 26. Sheldon got up on the wheel and made it close in the final laps but was unable to secure the sweep of the weekend, settling for second. .

"I felt like I ran 29 good laps and one not very good lap and Donny is great at capitalizing on any mistake," Haudenschild said after the race. "I'm still really happy with our performance this weekend. I can't thank NOS Energy Drink, the Marshall family and Ricky enough. We are having a lot of fun and that's what matters most," the Wooster, OH native added.

"Sheldon was really good on the cushion and I was kind of married to the bottom because I knew you are not going to pass him up there," Schatz, who has now won three of the five Outlaw races in 2018, said.

When asked about his hiccup and falling back on the restart, Schatz smiled and said, "Well, that's what it makes it fun. We made up for it. My guys gave me an awesome working race car and we are looking forward to Ricky coming back to us, but we are hitting on all cylinders right now. Hopefully we can keep winning some more races," Schatz added.

For the second consecutive night, David Gravel charged from deep to a top-five finish, this time coming from 12th to complete the podium. "We are passing a lot of cars in the Feature, we just need to qualify better and get some better track position. Hats off to my guys, we had to change motors before Qualifying and we are able to bounce back," a pleased Gravel said.

FVP sponsored driver Brian Brown bounced back from a DNF in the Craftsman Club Dash to finish fourth with Reutzel completing the top five. Logan Schuchart earned KSE Hard Charger honors coming from 22nd to eighth.

The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series begin its month-long journey through California Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Perris Auto Speedway. Illinois-native Brandon Sheppard looks to capture his third Illini 100 victory during the first of three stops this season in the Prairie State.

The Illini 100 is one of the most anticipated Late Model events of the year with its unique format consisting of an always thrilling 25-lap Craftsman Club Feature on Friday, capped by the 75-lap $15,000-to-win event on Saturday.

Two full programs at the high-banked, quarter-mile dirt oval will bring the top late model drivers in the business to Farmer City. With a stout field of competition, only the best drivers have been able to etch their names on the winners list, including Billy Moyer (2008, 2010, 2013), Shane Clanton (2009), Jimmy Mars (2012), Shannon Babb (2014), Sheppard (2015, 2017), and Josh Richards (2016); winners of the 25-lap opening night event include Scott Bloomquist (2015), Richards (2016) and Brian Shirley (2017).

Sheppard, the defending World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series champion, collected a total of 18 Series wins in 2017 including a flag-to-flag victory during the 75-lap Illini 100 on March 31. While the New Berlin, IL driver enjoys racing at tracks around the country, there's no place like home.

"Farmer City Raceway is one of my favorite tracks by far," Sheppard said. "I grew up racing there and cut my teeth there. I have a lot of family and friends that will get to come out and see me race that weekend and get to see exactly how nice of an operation (car owner) Mark Richards has. They used to get to see me race every weekend, but now we travel so much. It's special to get to race near home, especially at a track that I have so many laps on."

Sheppard holds two Illini 100 victories to his name, the first being on April 18, 2015. The then 22-year-old charged to the front from a 12th starting spot, passing Darrell Lanigan, Babb, Bobby Pierce and Clanton for the win.

"That first year I won the Illini 100 was pretty special," Sheppard said. "We started off the weekend struggling and somehow we came from the back and won that race. That was pretty special because I was in my dad and grandpa's car at the track I cut my teeth at."

A lot has changed since Sheppard's Illini 100 win in 2015. For the second season in a row, Sheppard pilots the Mark Richards Racing Rocket No. 1 in effort to defend his championship title and with hopes of topping the series' single season wins record by collecting one more win than 2017.

"Getting our first Outlaws win this early in the season is pretty huge. It seems like the first one is always the hardest to get off your back," said Sheppard. "Our confidence is up a little bit because we were getting better every night at Volusia and our finishes kept getting better and better. It's definitely nice to get our first win out of the way, and it's going to make for a little bit better of expectations when we go into Smoky Mountain and then on to Farmer City."

The World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series will invade Smoky Mountain Speedway for the Tennessee Tipoff on March 9-10 before heading north to Farmer City Raceway for the Illini 100 on March 23-24.Tickets for both events are available now online or by calling 844-DIRT-TIX.

The World of Outlaws Craftsman® Late Model Series is brought to fans across the country by many important sponsors and partners, including: Arizona Sport Shirts (Official Apparel Company), Craftsman (Official Tool), Hoosier Racing Tire (Official Tire), Morton Buildings (Official Building), Sears (Official Home Store), VP Racing Fuels (Official Racing Fuel), iRacing (Official Online Racing Game), DirtonDirt.com (Hard Charger Award) and PFC Brakes (Fast Time Award); in addition to contingency sponsors, including: Cometic Gasket, COMP Cams, Edelbrock, JE Pistons, , MSD, Penske Shocks, QA1, QuarterMaster, and Wrisco (Exclusive Racing Aluminum); along with manufacturer sponsors, including: Capital Race Cars, Integra Shocks, Impact Racing Products, Intercomp, Racing Electronics, Rocket Chassis and TNT Rescue.

Founded in 1978, the World of Outlaws®, based in Concord, N.C., is the premier national touring series for dirt track racing in North America, featuring the most powerful cars on dirt, the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series and the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series. The World of Outlaws Craftsman® Late Model Series will lead an expected huge field of star drivers into two, complete $10,000-to-win events.

The Outlaws are coming off four consecutive nights of DIRTcar Nationals action in Florida where four different drivers found their way to Victory Lane, including Tim McCreadie (Feb. 14), Dale McDowell (Feb. 15), Scott Bloomquist (Feb. 16), and defending series champion Brandon Sheppard (Feb. 17). The battle for the crown is as close as ever with racers setting their sights on Smoky Mountain to stake their claim to the championship lead.

Tennessee native Mike Marlar is especially excited to return home from Florida in February and Volusia's tricky, high-speed half-mile oval. Joining the tour full-time in 2018, Marlar is eager to take on the 4/10-mile just south of Knoxville, TN, as the competition ratchets up for the Outlaws' first back-to-back shootouts at Smoky Mountain with more than $100,000 on the line over the two nights.

"The Tennessee Tipoff is a pretty big event and the racetrack and facility at Smoky Mountain is a really awesome place," said Marlar, who had 11 top-five's in 16 starts with the Outlaws in 2017. "It's the first time at home that you're going to see all of the guys that are heavy-hitters come out and race."

Marlar is hoping his Tennessee roots will give him an advantage, but he knows the Volunteer State is loaded with superstars all looking to Smoky Mountain to pocket some of the big money on the line.

"You know, living in Tennessee, it's hard to be the best guy from Tennessee," Marlar said. "There's some pretty good guys from right around the area. For starters, Scott has probably ran more laps than anyone. Then Jimmy , it's close to home for him, too. Billy Ogle has won races there and Dale is pretty much from Chattanooga, so he's right there too. Some of the best guys in the country are in a three-hour radius . ... If can race in Tennessee with these guys, I know I have just as good of a shot winning anywhere."

Many of the top late model drivers from around the country will invade Smoky Mountain Speedway for the Tennessee Tipoff, including Brandon Overton, the 2015 Rookie of the Year who won last year's one-day Outlaw event at Smoky Mountain. After his win in 2017 Overton attributed his success to his Randy Weaver Dream Team based in Crossville, TN.

"I suck here so bad most of the time and I've watched every Dirt on Dirt video of this place I can and the whole time I was out there I was thinking about everything that Randy told me," Overton said in Smoky Mountain Speedway's Victory Lane on May 13, 2017. "Obviously, he's won a lot of races over here and knows how to get around this place so every time I would make a mistake, I'd make sure not to do it again."

Additional drivers who have entered into the Tennessee Tipoff in the past include Bloomquist, who is the only two-time Outlaws event winner at Smoky Mountain Speedway (2015 and 2016). Chris Madden, of Gray Court, SC, has already proved to be one of the most consistent drivers on tour, collecting the DIRTcar Nationals Big Gator Championship with his new Barry Wright Race Cars team. Defending series champion Sheppard is back on top heading to Smoky Mountain, but he'll be challenged by the likes of former series champions Shane Clanton and Rick Eckert, plus last year's top rookie Devin Moran. In all, drivers representing at least 16 different states are expected to roll into the pits for this year's event, making it one of the biggest races in the track history.

A night of practice on March 8 will lead up to two nights of action featuring qualifying, heat races, Last Chance Showdown and 50-lap Craftsman Club Feature events each night. Joining the Outlaws will be the NeSmith Chevrolet Late Models and the Kajun Mini Stocks.

Advanced tickets are on sale now, including the special tiered parking area overlooking the backstretch. A three-day package is only $50. Buy your tickets online today or call 844-DIRT-TIX.

The Greatest Show on Dirt Set to Invade Texas for First Time in 2018

Outlaws will make second-ever visit to Cotton Bowl, 12th visit to LoneStar next weekend

CONCORD, NC - February 14, 2018 - After an exciting DIRTcar Nationals in Florida, the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series is set to invade Texas for the first of two visits in 2018. The Outlaws will return to the Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, TX for just the second time in the Series 40-year history on Friday, February 23, 2018 before making their 12th appearance at the LoneStar Speedway on Saturday, February 24.

Now nine-time Series Champion, Donny Schatz is off to the fastest start of his illustrious career coming off four Feature wins in five starts, including a sweep of the All-Star Circuit of Champions, at Volusia Speedway Park to capture his first ever DIRTcar Nationals Big Gator Championship. In Outlaw competition, Schatz scored wins on consecutive nights to end the week and opened the season with a 14th to fourth charge on a lightning-fast surface.

The story of 2018 for the rest of the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series is who will challenge Schatz this year. With arguably the strongest group of Outlaws in over a decade, Brad Sweet, coming off a runner-up finish at the DIRTcar Nationals, seems ready to go.

"We worked all week and we're still chasing the No.15," Sweet, who won the lone Outlaw appearance at Cotton Bowl back in 2016, said after DIRTcar Nationals. "He makes us better," last year's runner-up in the Series Point Standings added.

Saturday night the World of Outlaws will travel down the road to LoneStar Speedway in Kilgore, TX to the 1/3rd mile oval. The Series returned to LoneStar last year for the first time in seven years with none other than Donny Schatz dominating the event, leading all 35 laps. Will Schatz lead the way again?

Perhaps, Sheldon Haudenschild in his new ride, the Stenhouse Jr. - Marshall NOS Energy No.17, is ready to make some more noise. The 2017 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year wasted no time getting acquainted with his new ride winning the Season Opener at Volusia, his first ever Outlaw triumph, in thrilling fashion. The next two nights, Haudenschild charged from 21st to seventh and 13th to third, allowing the second-generation racer to leave Florida second in the Outlaw Point Standings, just 12 markers back of Schatz.

Jason Johnson enters the weekend third in points, 18 points back, on the strength of two top-five finishes at Volusia, including a heartbreaking runner-up finish where he led 28 of the 30 laps before Schatz stole the victory. Interestingly enough, Johnson and Haudenschild finished on the podium in 2017 at LoneStar and will look to ride that confidence into the weekend.

A stout field of entries is expected for both nights in Texas with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series. Along with the 17 teams that will follow the full Series, Indiana's Joey Saldana, Pennsylvania's Tim Shaffer, Iowa's Terry and Austin McCarl, California's Cory Eliason, Dominic and Giovanni Scelzi are among the confirmed entries for the weekend's action. Texas natives Aaron Reutzel, who moved up to 410 Sprint Cars full time in 2018, and Sam Hafertepe, Jr. will look to score a hometown victory.

Tickets for both events are available at WoOSprint.com or by clicking which track you are looking for here Cotton Bowl / LoneStar. If you cannot make it to the track, be sure to watch all the action live on DIRTVision.com as they will broadcast every race from the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series 40th Anniversary Season live to fans across the globe. This is really an awesome deal, and I hope to be involved with it for many years to come; so thank you, guys," said Sheppard. "I also have to thank my crew. Man, what a crew. Mark , Dan , Austin , Joel - you all are the best group of guys I've ever been involved with. We've had a heck of a year."

The Rocket 1 Racing team also received the Crew of the Year Award. In the past, this award has been given to the crew chief, but this year the award recognized the team effort that made this dream season happen.

"One thing I've learned over the years is that if you put good people together, good things can happen. And these guys are great guys," said team owner Mark Richards. "Brandon has done an awesome job ever since the first day of testing this year, all the way until . We are really thankful for what he's done for keeping this team going and keeping Rocket 1 up front... This has been such a year."

Throughout the season, every time Sheppard appeared on the podium he credited his success to his hard-working crew. It was no different when reflecting on his overall season at the banquet as he gave heartfelt thank you to Richards, Crew Chief White, Hargrove and Rogers.

"The first night at Volusia, we had just a little conflict. I thought we needed to change something on the car. Mark thought it was me. It was just the heat of the moment," explained Sheppard. "We were dang near ready to load up and call it a night after the heat race, and we ended up running the B-Main. We finished out the night and we were hooting and hollering, throwing stuff and everything else. Right then and there I knew that my crew had my back. I didn't know any of them that well until we went to Florida."

Devin Moran received the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series 2017 Rookie of the Year award. The young driver from Dresden, OH finished fourth in the point standings during his first-ever year on a national tour.

"Congratulations to everyone who made it through the whole season," said Moran. "This isn't an easy task as we found out. We definitely had our ups and our downs, but at the end of the day this is just one big family together. It's not just my family , but everyone together... It's really been a pleasure and been awesome racing with the Outlaw guys. I have to thank World Racing Group and The World of Outlaws just for putting this deal on for us. It's a top-notch series, and it's a blast to do it. We're excited to do it again next year."

For the 2017 season, Moran burned up the road and hit dirt tracks around the country with his family by his side, including his father - storied late model driver, Donnie - as well as his two brothers, Wylie and Tristin.

"One thing my dad has always taught me is to ride the wave, and I've definitely had an up and down year all year," said Moran. "That's one thing I really took into consideration all year, was just riding that wave and keeping my head down and straight forward and doing what I have to do."

Moran completed his first season with the World of Outlaws tallying two wins (Atomic Speedway on May 26 and Georgetown Speedway on Aug. 17) as well as 14 top-five and 30 top-ten performances.

With 2017 in the books, the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series teams and officials are already preparing for an exciting 2018 season.
Schatz Outruns Sweet's Consistency, Gravel's Explosiveness to Capture 2017 Title

Looking Ahead, Some Predictions for 2018

CONCORD, NC - Nov. 5, 2017 - The 2017 World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series season saw Donny Schatz claim his ninth Series title. Schatz, who turned 40 in August, has now won five of the last six Championships and will chase his tenth title in 2018, but not without heavy resistance from David Gravel, Brad Sweet and the rest of the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series regulars.

Gravel, 25, capped off a career season with a thrilling victory in the Season Finale at The Dirt Track at Charlotte. The win doubled his and CJB Motorsports' win total from last season and left them even hungrier heading into the offseason. "It's been a lot of fun. I'm glad I was able to give Barry Jackson a career year. He deserves it; he is the heart and soul of this team. We are very excited for next year," Gravel said.

Despite Gravel scoring 12 more wins than Brad Sweet, the latter took the runner-up position in the point standings. If Gravel wants to challenge Schatz for a Series Title next season, he will need to find more consistency on a nightly basis.

Then again, Sweet's always the bridesmaid, never the bride model was unprecedented. In comparison to his five wins, the Grass Valley, California native scored 14 runner-up finishes and 18 additional third-place finishes this year. While that is nothing to hang your head over, being so close to victory that many times has to leave a bittersweet feeling heading into the 2018 campaign. "It's always easy to look at the negatives, but we had a ton of positives this year. It took a lot of teamwork to stand up here. It's not easy to be second in points. We'll keep trying and will be better next year," Sweet said at the Banquet.

As for Schatz, what else can be said. 2017 saw the Fargo, North Dakota native score his tenth career 5-Hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals title as well as becoming the first driver to score back-to-back Kings Royal victories. Those two wins alone garnered Schatz $200,000 in winnings. "It's been a hell of a ride. See you all next year," Schatz said amidst a handful of jokes and stories at the Banquet.

While Schatz is without a doubt the man to beat, it wasn't always that way. At age 25 (Gravel's age now), Schatz scored just two wins in World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series competition and finished seventh in the point standings. It wasn't until 2006, at age 29, when Schatz scored his first career Championship Title.

While Gravel is not quite at the Donny Schatz measuring stick right now, Schatz himself was not at the Donny Schatz level at Gravel's age and experience level.

Having said that, all the pieces are in place for the Watertown, Connecticut native to challenge Schatz. Gravel and CJB Motorsports are bringing back the entire crew next year and will be poised to prevent Schatz from scoring his tenth Championship.

Sheldon Haudenschild was awarded the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year as both he and fellow rookie contender Brent Marks vastly improved throughout the season. Haudenschild leaned on the experience of veteran crew chief Bonzai Bruns and his father Jac for guidance on new tracks. Meanwhile, Marks had only one full-time crew guy all year, and neither of them had seen any tracks west of Knoxville. Expect both young guns to be ready to go in 2018.

Looking ahead to next season, the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series appears to be stronger than ever in what will be the Series' 40th Anniversary of existence. With all the big names returning and a cast of new drivers expected, here are a few things to look for in 2018.

Count on it:
A pair of multiple-time World of Outlaws winners will join the tour full-time.
o Stay tuned to our social media channels for official announcements.
Shane Stewart and Larson Marks Racing will score double-digit wins.
o Since the arrival of Crew Chief Lee Stauffer, the LMR No. 2 has been lethal, scoring six wins since Stauffer was hired in late June. Look for Stewart and company to be red hot right out of the box in 2018.
Sheldon Haudenschild will score his first career World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series win
o The young Wooster, Ohio native was painfully close on several occasions in 2017. Another year of experience under his belt will only help the young throttle stomper.
Daryn Pittman will have a bounce back season.
o Three wins and 28 top-fives may not sound like an "off" season for many, but for the 2013 World of Outlaws Champion, it was. It took Pittman until August to score his first win of the season. That will not happen in 2018.

Don't be shocked if:
Brent Marks scores his first career World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series win.
Marks and his one-man crew team caught fire at the end of the season and surged up the point standings to a top-ten finish.
Logan Schuchart doubles his season-best win total (again)
In 2016, Schuchart scored his first World of Outlaws win and added another later in the campaign. In 2017, Schuchart doubled his season-best with four wins. The once 'little team that could,' Shark Racing has now become a force on the World of Outlaws tour, at times showing flashes of dominance. Schuchart will be a force in 2018 and for years to come.
Kraig Kinser and Jason Sides score multiple wins
The pair of veterans showed flashes of brilliance, but only scored one win between the two of them (Kinser on 7/6). Frequent visitors to the top-ten, look for Kinser and Sides to land in victory lane more often in 2018.
Believe it or not:
There will be a new World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series Champion in 2018.
Until proven otherwise, Schatz is the man to beat. But the likes of Sweet, Gravel and Stewart are chomping at the bit to secure their first championship. The 2018 season will see Gravel and Stewart, specifically, return their entire operation, coming off of career-best seasons. At the very least, Schatz will be challenged significantly in his quest for his tenth Championship.

2017 World of Outlaws Awards

Chassis Builder of the Year: J&J Auto Racing
Engine Builder of the Year: Shaver Engines
Crew Chief of the Year: Barry Jackson, CJB Motorsports
Ted Johnson Outstanding Contribution to Sprint Car Racing: Carlton Reimers
VP Racing Fuels Award: Donny Schatz
KSE Hard Charger Award: Logan Schuchart
Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year: Sheldon Haudenschild

The World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series is brought to fans across the country by many important sponsors and partners, including: Craftsman (Official Tool), Arctic Cat (Official Side-by-Side Recreational Vehicle), Extended Stay America (Official Hotel), Hoosier Racing Tire (Official Tire), Morton Buildings (Official Building), Sears (Official Home Store), The Kenny Wallace Dirt Racing Experience (Official Racing Experience) and VP Racing Fuels (Official Racing Fuel); in addition to contingency sponsors, including: Cometic Gasket, COMP Cams, Edelbrock, JE Pistons, KSE Racing Products, MSD and Superflow Dynos; along with manufacturer sponsors, including: Impact Racing Products, Intercomp, Racing Electronics, and TNT Rescue

When the checker flag waved after 50-laps it was Dennis Erb Jr. who came out on top in front of a sold-out show.

"You know, we've been working real hard," said Erb Jr. " Heather has put a lot of time into this. To get here last night with a second place, we had a good car last night we just tweaked on it a little bit, and we were able to get the job done ."

Friday's and Saturday's World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series feature saw an epic battle for the lead boil between Mike Marlar and Erb Jr. The pair battled almost all 50-laps on Friday until Brandon Sheppard inserted himself into the dance for the lead leaving Erb Jr. and Marlar to settle for second and third. On Saturday, the crowd saw the same plot developing between Marlar and Erb Jr. who ran door-to-door for several laps. On lap 46 of the 50-lap event, Erb Jr. slid past Marlar to grab the lead and refused to let the top spot slip away for the second night in a row.

"We had a good run with there and I knew the car was good," added Erb Jr. "I think he slipped-up a little there, and we took advantage of it, and didn't look back after that because we had a full field behind us. The car just worked great. It's really feels good to come and pick a victory up in front of everybody."

With two podium finishes and Friday's quick-time award, Marlar still had a great World Finals weekend even despite not getting a win.

"We had an awesome weekend and we had a fun time down here," said Marlar. "A sold-out crowd. You know, it's awesome to race in front of this many people. It really is. I would like to thank all of these fans for coming out. This was a cool deal and it worked out good for us. Congratulations to Dennis. He was really good last night and wouldn't have surprised anyone if he had one last night. It was just an awesome race."

" was really racy and the competition is so strong that you want to preserve a little bit but you can't. If you slow a little bit then somebody is passing you," added Marlar. "These guys raise us to a new level and make us race hard every lap and it's always fun."

Rounding out the podium was Jimmy Owens who charged to third from a ninth place starting position. Owens appeared in the top five by lap 20 of the feature. He then steadily began working his way through lapped traffic. Owens reached the battle for the lead a few times but was unsuccessful moving forward from third. Owens held off charges from Sheppard, Tim McCreadie and Josh Richards to secure the final podium position.

Crowning a Champion
Headed into Saturday night's World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series feature at World Finals, setting a new single-season wins record was at the top of Sheppard and his Rocket #1 Racing team's to-do list. Friday evening at The Dirt Track, Sheppard tied the record by scoring his 18th win of the season after a thrilling feature. On Saturday, Sheppard began the night by winning his heat race after starting on the pole. Sheppard then moved to the redraw where he would choose the sixth position for the second night in a row. Unfortunately, Sheppard settled for a fourth-place finish in the feature.

Although Sheppard did not top the series record, the Rocket 1 Racing team had a remarkable season across the board. In 43 series races, Sheppard totaled 18 wins, 36 top-five's, 39 top-10's finishes all boiling down to receiving his first ever World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series championship title by an impressive 326-point lead.

"You know, our team is amazing. Mark Richards, Steve Baker, I can't thank them enough for giving me the opportunity to get behind the wheel of this thing," said Sheppard. "I had some big shoes to fill with Josh driving last year and hopefully we lived up to it. I think we did. We tied the record for the most wins in a season and I was kind of hoping to get that other one tonight but we tried our best. Like I said this team, in my mind, it's the best team out there... I think we'll be back next year so we'll see what we can do then."

The 2017 season officially comes to a close on Sunday night at the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series banquet where drivers, crews, family and friends will join for a special night of awards.
