Ontario Modifieds Racing Series Unveils a Tentative 2021 Schedule
By Jim Clarke

It’s a simple concept that’s easy to understand. Racers just want to race. That’s what made things so tough for OMRS drivers and teams. Despite the best intentions of tour officials, the 2020 schedule fell victim to government restrictions caused by the COVID-19 Coronavirus and was cancelled before anyone had even turned a lap on the track. With an optimistic look to the future, a tentative calendar of events has been released that could see the popular series – presented by GEN-3 Electrical – run 7 shows.

“Everyone has their fingers crossed and we’re hoping things will head in a different direction for 2021,” said Ontario Modifieds Racing Series spokesperson Rick Warnes. “Early indications point to about a handful of new teams joining the fold and even though it has been more than a year since he celebrated clinching the title, each driver in the field has their sights set on unseating reigning champion John Baker Jr.”

Subject to COVID safety guidelines in place at the host venues, this year’s agenda will get rolling with a pair of dates – Saturday, May 29th and Saturday, June 19th – at Peterborough Speedway. Action shifts to Flamboro Speedway Saturday, July 3rd. While all OMRS shows pay the same number of team points toward the overall title, Warnes says the highlight of the schedule will be the inaugural running of the Bill Pickford Memorial – Saturday, August 14th – at Peterborough.

“A good friend of the sport and strong ambassador for the series, Bill passed away toward the end of the 2019 season,” explained Rick Warnes. “At the year’s awards celebration, we announced plans for an event to honour Bill’s memory and his dedication to our brand, as well as stock car racing across the province. Taking the checkered flag in this prestigious race is sure to become an annual badge of honour for OMRS drivers.”

Ontario Modifieds Racing Series Tentative 2021 Schedule

Saturday, May 29th Peterborough Speedway

Saturday, June 19th Peterborough Speedway

Saturday, July 3rd Flamboro Speedway

Saturday, July 10th Peterborough Speedway

Saturday, July 31st Flamboro Speedway

Saturday, August 14th Peterborough Speedway

                                                          Inaugural Bill Pickford Memorial

Saturday, September 4th Peterborough Speedway

                                                          2021 Championship Clash

Due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, dates may be changed, cancelled or added.

2021 Ontario Modifieds Racing Series, presented by GEN-3 Electrical action is sponsored by All or Nothing Brewhouse, Sterling Tire, Bourque Transmission, Conview Concrete, Thinkpath Design, TNT Performance Products and Clarke Motorsports Communications.

For the latest schedule information, driver profiles and more, visit www.facebook.com/OMRS or www.ontariomodifiedsracing.com.

With an eye on possible COVID-19 provincial restrictions, the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series, presented by GEN-3 Electrical has released a tentative 2021 schedule.

By Jim Clarke | Clarke Motorsports Communications/ clarkemotorsports@hotmail.com

Ontario Modifieds Racing Series Closes its 2018 Schedule This Weekend

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

After a few dates on the road, teams with the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – are looking forward to getting back to some familiar territory and will be part of the Championship Clash – Saturday, September 1st – at Peterborough Speedway. Rick Warnes – who along with Randy Hollingsworth and Bill Pickford make up the OMRS team of officials – says it will be great to wrap-up the season at the venue known as Canada’s Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval.

“For the first time since the series’ inception in 2010, we visited a pair of new tracks west of the GTA,” Rick Warnes said. “For many of the racers on the tour, the only time they’d ever seen the layouts at Sauble or Delaware was when they rolled through the pit gates. Still, I think we gave a good accounting of ourselves and that helped to expose our brand of racing to a new group of fans.”

Heading into the Saturday night season finale at the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road, Warnes pointed-out that there are several teams still in the running for the 2018 championship. Anthony DiBello leads the way, but he’s less than 20 points ahead of reigning title-holder Brad Stevenson and fewer than 25 markers in front of Stevenson’s teammate, Chad Strawn. Former champ John Baker Jr. is within 30 points of DiBello, while Rick Warnes and his son Rob – another prior tour title-holder – are deadlocked in 5th spot in the standings, less than 50 markers back of the leader.

“His previous Thunder Car/Super Stock crowns have shown that Anthony knows how to win; especially at Peterborough,” Warnes continued. “He’s definitely in the running, but the rest of the pack will be hot on his tail and there’s no way they’re going to just hand over the trophy without making things interesting.”

For the Saturday, September 1st event, pit gates are scheduled to open at 12:30, with the general admission spectator grandstands unlocked at 3:00 and the night’s first green flag at 5:00.

Ontario Modifieds Racing Series point standings:

#16 Anthony DiBello 443

#77 Brad Stevenson 425

#77c Chad Strawn 420

#63 John Baker Jr. 415

#90 Rick Warnes 397

#95 Rob Warnes 397

#90m Craig Stevenson 369

#62w Willow Barberstock 368

#62 Randy Hollingsworth 364

#72 Bob Franks 166

#69 Craig Scott 93

#31 Josh Gruntz 90

To learn more about the 2018 Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – schedule, visit the group’s social media platform, www.facebook.com/OMRS or look for the newly redesigned web-site www.ontariomodifiedsracing.com, coming soon.

For over a decade, Torque Builders Inc. has worked with partners and clients in the construction industry, offering new, general construction services, renovations and retrofits in the industrial, commercial and institutional sector. With just a few shows remaining on the schedule, officials are looking forward to seeing how the late season events play out.

“It has been a great year and we’ve had a chance to make some new friends and fans during this year’s tour,” said Rick Warnes, who along with Randy Hollingsworth and Bill Pickford make up the OMRS group of officials. “Our car counts have been strong, with a dozen or more teams scoring points in at least one main event and only a single rainout on the calendar.”

Warnes pointed to the arrival of former Peterborough Speedway Thunder Car/Super Stock track champion Anthony DiBello as one of the strengths this year; along with Bob Franks and Craig Scott joining the tour and the return of former series regular Josh Gruntz. In addition to the annual events at Peterborough and Flamborough Speedways, the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series also added Sauble Speedway to this year’s agenda and has a first-ever trip to Delaware Speedway planned for Saturday, August 18th.

“Getting to some different areas is a great thing for all involved; the drivers, sponsors and especially the series,” said Rick Warnes. “There’s no telling where the next group of new drivers might be coming from, so we need to put out the welcome mat and be willing to open the door to as many people as possible.”

Ontario Modifieds Racing Series point standings:

#16 Anthony DiBello 396

#77 Brad Stevenson 381

#63 John Baker Jr. 375

#77c Chad Strawn 373

#90 Rick Warnes 356

#95 Rob Warnes 353

#90m Craig Stevenson 334

#62w Willow Barberstock 330

#62 Randy Hollingsworth 325

#72 Bob Franks 166

#69 Craig Scott 93

#31 Josh Gruntz 55

To learn more about the 2018 Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – schedule, visit the group’s social media platform, www.facebook.com/OMRS or look for the newly redesigned web-site www.ontariomodifiedsracing.com, coming soon.

For over a decade, Torque Builders Inc. has worked with partners and clients in the construction industry, offering new, general construction services, renovations and retrofits in the industrial, commercial and institutional sector. Bill Pickford – who along with Rick Warnes and Randy Hollingsworth make up the OMRS group of officials – says the tour enjoys racing in different places, but always looks forward to coming home.

“We’ve always had a strong promotional and working relationship with J.P. and the team at Peterborough Speedway,” Pickford said. “They’ve been a warm and welcoming host over the years; giving us a half dozen races each season and a spot to host our ‘Test-a-Mod’ day. A quick glance at our driver roster shows a solid connection to the track and its various divisions.”

Pickford pointed-out that Craig Scott – one of the newest runners with the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – is a graduate of the area’s Thunder Car/Super Stock ranks and turned laps at both Kawartha and Peterborough Speedways, while Bob Franks had been a local racing fixture for over 20 years before taking a break from the sport.

In the early 80’s, Franks competed in the Challenger division at what was then known as Westgate Speedway, before moving to the Street Stock ranks at Peterborough and Mosport while also running invitational shows at Barrie, Sunset and Flamborough. There were championships at Peterborough and Mosport and more than half a dozen years driving the popular ride car at Kawartha Speedway. Franks says he always wanted to get back behind the wheel and feels good to have had some early season success with OMRS. Above everything else, the pilot of the #72 machine says he’d like to thank all the fans, his family, friends and sponsors for their continued support over the years.

Ontario Modifieds Racing Series point standings:

#16 Anthony DiBello 286

#63 John Baker Jr. 279

#77c Chad Strawn 272

#77 Brad Stevenson 272

#90 Rick Warnes 264

#95 Rob Warnes 252

#90m Craig Stevenson 245

#62w Willow Barberstock 243

#62 Randy Hollingsworth 232

#72 Bob Franks 114

#69 Craig Scott 47

To learn more about the 2018 Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – schedule, visit the group’s social media platform, www.facebook.com/OMRS or look for the newly redesigned web-site www.ontariomodifiedsracing.com, coming soon.

For over a decade, Torque Builders Inc. has worked with partners and clients in the construction industry, offering new, general construction services, renovations and retrofits in the industrial, commercial and institutional sector. The driver – who was used to being a contender at every event – was faced with a frustrating year plagued by bad luck and mechanical issues that resulted in a 6th place finish in the final point standings. Despite the problems he’d endured, a streak of 3 late season wins gave the likeable racer an indication that things were about to turn around.

With a pair of 20 lap features on the agenda, the popular open-wheeled squad paid its first visit to the Hamilton area’s Flamboro Speedway Saturday, June 30th. Coming into the weekend, the fan favourite stood 2nd in the OMRS standings, just 10 points out of the top spot. Coming from 4th on the starting grid in the opening round, JBJ had his eyes on the front of the pack and managed to take the win in the first 20 lapper. Reigning series champion Brad Stevenson, Anthony DiBello, Chad Strawn and Rick Warnes rounded-out the top 5. Randy Hollingsworth, Willow Barberstock, Craig Stevenson and Rob Warnes completed the running order.

With tour officials inverting the finish from the opener to start the next main event, Baker Jr. would start from the back of the pack, with some heavy hitters standing between him and victory lane. Rob Warnes and Craig Stevenson brought the field to the green flag, but mechanical issues would sideline the former champion’s #95 machine. One of the best racers in the province at working through traffic, John Baker Jr. wouldn’t be denied his second win of the day. DiBello, Strawn, Brad Stevenson and Rick Warnes chased him across the stripe. Barberstock, Craig Stevenson, Hollingsworth and Rob Warnes wrapped-up the finishing spots.

Ontario Modifieds Racing Series notebook: Following the Flamboro event, the series takes some time off before a Saturday, July 21st return to Canada’s Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval.

2018 Ontario Modifieds Racing Series schedule

Saturday, May 26th Peterborough Speedway

Cancelled - rain

Saturday, June 9th Peterborough Speedway

Main event winner: #77C, Chad Strawn

Saturday, June 16th Sauble Speedway

Twin 20 lap feature winners: #77, Brad Stevenson. #63, John Baker Jr.

Saturday, June 23rd Peterborough Speedway

Main event winner: #16, Anthony DiBello

Saturday, June 30th Flamboro Speedway

Twin 20 lap feature winners: #63, John Baker Jr.

Saturday, July 21st Peterborough Speedway

Saturday, August 4th Flamboro Speedway

Saturday, August 18th Delaware Speedway

Saturday, August 25th Peterborough Speedway

Saturday, September 1st Peterborough Speedway

                                                Championship Clash

To learn more about the 2018 Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – schedule, visit the group’s social media platform, www.facebook.com/OMRS or look for the newly redesigned web-site www.ontariomodifiedsracing.com, coming soon.

For over a decade, Torque Builders Inc. has worked with partners and clients in the construction industry, offering new, general construction services, renovations and retrofits in the industrial, commercial and institutional sector. The Ontario Modifieds Racing Series – powered by Torque Builders Inc. – visits several different venues during their annual schedule but lists Peterborough Speedway as its unofficial home track. Saturday, June 23rd, OMRS drivers and teams made their second stop of the 2018 season at the facility known as Canada’s Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval.

Willow Barberstock and Craig Stevenson brought the starting field from the staging area for their 20 lap main event. Barberstock – who began her racing career at Peterborough at the age of 12 and eventually won a track championship in the division now known as Bone Stock – took the early lead and pulled away from the competition. John Baker Jr. – the 2016 series champion, who had started 9th – moved into the 5th spot with a handful of circuits complete and was looking to continue his march forward when a yellow flag for a 4th turn issue slowed the pace with 7 laps on the board.

Anthony DiBello – a former track champion in the Thunder Car/Super Stock field – took the lead on the restart, with Baker Jr. and reigning series title holder Brad Stevenson hot on his tail. Stevenson slipped into the runner-up position and was catching DiBello over the late stages of the event but couldn’t get passed the pilot of the #16 machine, who clinched his first career open-wheeled modified win. Barberstock held on for 4th, with Craig Stevenson completing the top 5. Rick Warnes, Chad Strawn, Randy Hollingsworth, Bob Franks and Rob Warnes rounded-out the finishing order.

Ontario Modifieds Racing Series notebook: Anthony DiBello and Brad Stevenson earned the OMRS heat race checkered flags at Peterborough. When the green flag flies to open the 2018 season, the 37-year-old racer from Courtice, Ontario will have a teammate, as Chad Strawn makes his return to the provincial racing wars.

After spending the past few seasons helping-out in the team’s shop, the former Thunder Car and Open Wheeled Modified speedster will steer an immaculately prepared and nearly identical looking machine along with Stevenson on the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series, with selected OSCAAR Mod starts. Both cars will carry the familiar S & S Racing #77, with Strawn’s piece designated as #77C. The pair will make a formidable combination as they head out on the road in search of the next checkered flag. Chad Strawn says he’s looking forward to getting back behind the wheel.

“Brad and I have always worked well together and I can’t wait to put this new car through its paces,” said the 32-year-old father of 2 from Newcastle, Ontario. “I’m sure we’ll have a bit of a friendly rivalry on the track, but racing as a team will help us focus on the big picture and that’s what is most important as we go through the season.”

Stevenson and Strawn will handle the powerful equipment on raceday, but another talented duo was responsible for getting the cars ready to race. Graham Annis of GTA Race Designs and Graham Flett took each car down to its bare bones and massaged the chassis, before putting the pieces back together. Veteran racer Dan McHattie shared some of his vast chassis knowledge with the team and Mark VanLuven of AVL Signs & Designs put the finishing touch on the vinyl wrap design for each car. Brad Stevenson says it’ll be an exciting year and he can’t wait to get back to the track.

“Just like in our OMRS championship season, these things look fast even sitting still and I’m sure they’ll be a favourite with the fans,” Brad Stevenson said. “An off-season of hard work by everyone associated with this team has created some top-notch equipment that we’re really proud of.”

In addition to a pair of championship calibre Open Wheeled Modifieds, S & S Racing will also field the #77 Mini Cooper Bone Stock machine – shared by Corey Strawn and his wife Rhonda – in weekly action at Peterborough Speedway and special events at Kawartha Downs & Speedway.

The 2018 schedule for S & S Racing is made possible with support from Eibach Springs, Marcor Automotive, Restoration Co., Koni Shocks, Taunton Tire, McGowan Insulation, Terco Construction, D&F Insulation, Walton Restoration, Biggs & Narciso, Wickens Dry Ice Blasting, AEOC Groups, Abatement Technologies, Caliber Environmental, Gtas Finest Restoration, Martech, Greenstream Environmental, I&I Construction and Lesco.

Family, friends and fans can follow the team throughout the upcoming season by liking the S & S Racing page at www.facebook.com.

Chad Strawn (#77C) and Brad Stevenson run some side-by-side laps during Ontario Modifieds Racing Series practice – Saturday, May 26th – at Peterborough Speedway.

Prepared by: Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media
                      clarkemotorsports@hotmail.com, www.facebook.com/clarkemotorsports
                      613.968.6410

Ontario Legends Series Grows Stronger as Season Opener Gets Closer

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

It started with a whisper but like most great stories, the volume increased as more and more people heard the news. Now, it seems like the 2018 Trailers Plus Ontario Legends Series schedule is the only thing the provincial motorsports community can talk about. The new season gets underway Saturday, May 19th at Peterborough Speedway. Tour spokesperson Andrew McFadden – along with Jeff Drimmie and Kevin Foisy – says this year’s combined east-west calendar could be the biggest news in series history.

“We’ve put together a program that lets teams race where they want, when they want,” Andrew McFadden said. “They can criss-cross the province or stay in their own neighbourhood. There are no conflicting dates from opening night until the championship crowning checkered flag at the Autumn Colours Classic. Ideally, every driver will want to follow the entire schedule, but we’re open to any decision the individual teams want to make.”

McFadden says the flexible agenda – that allows drivers to accumulate valuable INEX regional points at every event they run – has a created new interest in the Trailers Plus Ontario Legends Series. This year’s season opener is still about a week away and already more than 30 teams have pre-registered for the 2018 series, with several new teams expected to be announced soon.

There are several back-to-back events on the schedule, but the marquee dates are Friday, July 13th at Kawartha Speedway and Saturday, July 14th at Peterborough Speedway for the inaugural running of the Ontario Legends Asphalt Nationals. McFadden says series officials wouldn’t be shocked to see some out of province invaders attempt to crack the starting line-up.

“We had some gate crashers show-up at a couple of shows last year, including Michigan’s Gregory Rudzik taking the season-ending Autumn Colours Classic win and North Carolina’s Randy Gunton making a Peterborough Speedway start on his racing vacation.”

2018 Trailers Plus Ontario Legends Series Schedule

Saturday, May 19th: Peterborough Speedway

Sunday, May 20th: Sunset Speedway

Friday, June 1st: Kawartha Speedway

Saturday, June 2nd: Peterborough Speedway

Saturday, June 16th: Peterborough Speedway

Saturday, June 23rd: Grand Bend Speedway

Sunday, June 24th: Grand Bend Speedway (road course test)

Saturday, July 7th: Sauble Speedway

Friday, July 13th: Kawartha Speedway

(Ontario Legends Asphalt Nationals)

Saturday, July 14th: Peterborough Speedway

                                                (Ontario Legends Asphalt Nationals)

Saturday, July 21st: Sunset Speedway

Saturday, July 28th: Peterborough Speedway

Saturday, August 11th: Sunset Speedway

Saturday, August 18th: Sauble Speedway

                                                National Qualifier

Saturday, August 25th: Peterborough Speedway

Saturday, September 8th: Grand Bend Speedway

Sunday, September 9th: Grand Bend Speedway (road course test)

Saturday, September 22nd: Sunset Speedway

Saturday, September 29th: Flamboro Speedway

October 5th, 6th & 7th: Peterborough Speedway

                                                Autumn Colours Classic

Since 1986, series title sponsor Trailers Plus has carried a full line of new and used cargo, sport, utility, livestock trailers and car haulers to do the job.
