Parker Price-Miller Wins 2018 Canadian Sprint Car Nationals; Lucas Smith Claims Crate Showdown Victory

Second Career CSCN Win for Indiana Driver

By Tommy Goudge

OHSWEKEN, Ontario (September 15, 2018) – Parker Price-Miller claimed $10,000 USD and the second Canadian Sprint Car Nationals victory of his career on Saturday night at Ohsweken Speedway, while Lucas Smith was the victor in the Crate Showdown. A total of 95 drivers competed in the 14th Annual Arrow Express Canadian Sprint Car Nationals supercharged by Nitro 54 Variety, including 65 360 Sprint Cars and 30 Crate Sprint Cars.

Canadian Sprint Car Nationals – Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars

Mark Smith (left), Parker Price-Miller, and Steve Poirier (right) took podium finishes at the 2018 Canadian Sprint Car Nationals (Photo by Dale Calnan/image Factor Media).

Jonathan Preston and Parker Price-Miller started first and second for the 35 lap A-Feature, but Chuck Hebing darted to the lead as the front row starters diced for position. The yellow flag came out with just one lap complete when Coleman Gulick slowed and then took off again, while the restart saw Preston flip wildly off the edge of the track in turn three to bring out the red flag. Preston climbed unscathed from his heavily-damaged car, and a longer green flag period ensued after the cleanup.

Hebing held the lead after the restart, but his advantage shrunk when he began to encounter slower traffic and Price-Miller slipped by on lap six. Row five starter and former CSCN winner Sam Hafertepe Jr. was already into the top five by this time, and jousted with Davie Franek as both tried to catch Max Stambaugh, Hebing, and Price-Miller. The yellow flag reappeared with 14 laps complete due to debris on the track, and Hebing’s attempt at retaking the lead was rebuffed after the restart.

Hebing’s dogged pursuit of Price-Miller continued, but the gap grew after a couple of close calls in traffic. Dylan Westbrook and Mark Smith entered the fray during this stint, but Westbrook’s bid for another top five finish went sour when he touched the wall. The yellow flag appeared again when Westbrook stopped on the track with a flat right rear tire and suspension damage on lap 24. Westbrook ran out of time in the work area and the race restarted without him, but Jeff Cook slowed with nose wing damage before another lap was completed; both Cook and Westbrook were able to return for the next restart.

Price-Miller continued at the front with Hebing again applying pressure, while Smith took third from Hafertepe and 20th starter Jordan Thomas entered the top five. More trouble slowed the race when Kyle Drum’s broken front end put him into the inside wall in turn three. Hafertepe took third back from Smith after the restart, while Hebing continued to throw everything he could at Price-Miller. Hebing’s hopes were dashed, however, when he made contact with the inside wall in turns one and two. The green flag stayed out as Hebing was able to get to the infield instead of stopping on the track, and Price-Miller then had a comfortable lead.

Hafertepe took over second when Hebing dropped out, and held that spot with five laps to go ahead of Smith, Thomas, and Steve Poirier on a late charge. While Price-Miller negotiated traffic, Hafertepe and Smith continued their contest. The Thomas charge ended when he tipped over in turn two to bring out a red flag with two laps left; this became an open red for all competitors to refuel. Thomas was able to rejoin the field for the restart.

Price-Miller fended off a challenge from Hafertepe after the restart and went on to take the win, while Poirier and Smith charged around Hafertepe to take podium finishes. Hafertepe, Franek finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while Scott Kreutter, Jordan Poirier, 26th starter Mitch Brown, 30th starter Chris Steele, and 22nd starter Jason Barney rounded out the top ten.

Dylan Westbrook was the fastest driver overall in time trials, while Chuck Hebing, Devon Dobie, Parker Price-Miller, Mack DeMan, Dain Naida, and Jonathan Preston claimed heat race wins, Alex Hill, Jordan Thomas, and Kyle Drum were B-Feature winners, and Jonathan Preston won the Pole Dash.

Nitro 54 Crate Showdown – Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars

Lucas Smith took the $1,000 prize for winning the Crate Showdown. (Photo by Dale Calnan/Image Factor Media).

Eric McGlone and Hannah Ferrell paced the field to the green flag for the $1,000-to-win Nitro 54 Crate Showdown, but the race was red flagged before the first lap was complete when Davey Boughton flipped on the backstretch. Boughton was uninjured, and Hannah Ferrell took the lead after the complete restart. While Ferrell held the lead, Lucas Smith passed Paul Klager and McGlone to take second before another red flag flew, this time for a hard crash between Caleb Wood and Josh Hansen.

Ferrell, Smith, and McGlone raced hard and sometimes three-wide for the lead during the next green flag stint, with Smith taking the lead on lap 11. At this point the race slowed again, as Dereck Lemyre spun and collected Jordan Hill in turn two. Ferrell stayed with Smith through several caution flags during the second half of the race, but spun and hit the outside wall trying to pass for the lead after the white flag.

Smith survived the one lap dash to the finish to take the feature win, followed by 14th starter Matt Farnham, Paul Klager, 15th starter Jacob Dykstra, and Eric McGlone; Farnham’s stellar run was negated after post-race technical inspection, however. Aaron Turkey, DJ Christie, Brian Nanticoke, 21st starter Bailey Heard, and Steven Beckett rounded out the top ten.

Derek Lemyre, Hannah Ferrell, and Caleb Wood won qualifying heat races, while Paul Ballantyne won the B-Feature.

Up Next at Ohsweken Speedway

Ohsweken Speedway will officially wrap-up its 2018 season with the annual Night of Champions Award Celebration at Carmen’s Banquet Centre in Hamilton, Ontario on Friday, November 16. The 2018 division champions and top points finishers in all four weekly Friday Night Excitement divisions will receive their awards and cash from the championship points fund. (September 14, 2018) – Ohsweken Speedway kicked off it’s biggest weekend of the season with the Burger Barn Night Before the Nationals as part of the 14th annual Arrow Express Canadian Sprint Car Nationals weekend presented by Nitro 54 Variety. A total of 133 drivers were signed into the pit area, including 65 360 Sprint Cars.

The Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars headlined the night with twin 15-lap Features as drivers battled for one of two guaranteed starting spots in Saturday’s 35-lap and $10,000 USD-to-win, $1,000 USD-to-start main event. When the dust settled, it was Mark Smith who won the first Feature and Sam Hafertepe Jr. who claimed victory in the second Feature. Those two drivers will start no worse than row five in Saturday’s A-Feature. Chuck Hebing started the night with a win in the rescheduled Patriot Sprint Tour Feature from July 20.

The Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks battled in their final 20-lap Feature of the event where Trevor DeBoer scored the win. Dave Bailey was officially crowned the division’s champion for the fourth consecutive season.

The HRW Automotive Mini Stock championship title came right down to the final Feature of the season. Kyle Wert scored the 15-lap Feature win while it was Matt Nuell who, unofficially, claimed the championship.

Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars Twin 15-Lap Features

Mark Smith and Jordan Thomas started on the front row of the first 15-lap A-Feature. Smith and Thomas swapped the lead on the opening lap with Smith in the top spot at the line. The two drivers raced side-by-side for the lead on lap four and a straightaway ahead of a three-car battle for third between Jared Zimbardi, Davie Franek and Dustin Daggett.

On lap five, the caution came out for the only time in the race when Chad Miller spun in turn one. Smith led again on the restart with Thomas in tow as they broke away from the rest of the field again. In the final five laps, Smith distanced himself by more than five car lengths and drove away to the win. Over the final three laps Parker Price-Miller drove past Daggett to take third. Zimbardi rounded out the top-five.

Sam Hafertepe Jr. and Jordan Poirier lined-up alongside each other in the first row of the second 15-lap A-Feature. Before the first lap could be completed, Scott Goodrich spun in turn two. The ensuing restart saw Hafertepe lead on the bottom while Chuck Hebing and Poirier raced for second. In the following laps, Jonathan Preston and Dylan Westbrook both got past Jordan Poirier for third and fourth, respectively.

With five to go, Hafertepe had opened a two-second lead over Hebing, who was being tracked down by Westbrook. On the final lap, Westbrook got past Hebing in turn two and then held him off at the line while Hafertepe claimed the win. Preston and Jordan Poirier rounded out the top-five.

With their 15-lap Feature wins, Smith and Hafertepe will start no worse than the fifth row for tomorrow’s 35-lap and $10,000 USD-to-win A-Feature.

Earlier in the night, it was Hafertepe, Thomas, Shawn Sliter, Hebing, Davie Franek and Westbrook claiming heat race wins.

Patriot Sprint Tour vs. Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars

Matt Billings and Alex Hill lined-up on the front row of the Patriot Sprint Tour versus Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Car feature that was postponed from July 20 due to rain. The 26-car starting lineup had already been set back on July 20 before rain postponed Feature action. Hill jumped out to an early advantage while fourth-starting Chuck Hebing quickly raced into second as Billings slipped to third.

Hill ran strong with the advantage she had gained early until a red flag with four laps complete when Billings flipped alone in turn four. Hebing took full advantage of the ensuing restart and drove to the lead in the outside lane while Mark Smith pushed forward to third.

By lap 10, the leaders worked into lapped traffic and Hill mounted a challenge to retake the lead from Hebing as they approached the halfway mark, but Hebing held off the charge. Over the final 12 laps, Hebing was perfect as he negotiated the slower cars and held off Hill and Smith to claim the $3,333 win. Dylan Westbrook earned the hard charger award driving from 24th to a fourth-place finish while Cory Turner rounded out the top-five.

Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks

Kacey Huffman and Mark Bazuin paced the field to the green flag in the final 20-lap Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stock Feature of the season. Bazuin jumped out to an early advantage with Jim Lampman racing into second. On lap seven, Bazuin jumped over the cushion in turn one, allowing both Lampman and Trevor DeBoer to pull alongside him for the race lead, but before the lap could be complete, Jay Liverance and Jason Lungaro came together in turn to bring out the first yellow.

The ensuing restart saw DeBoer gain the lead on lap eight and pull away to a 10-car length lead before Bazuin got into the outside wall in turn two at the halfway mark to bring out the second yellow. The following green flag saw Mike Ferguson race into second and hold the spot until the final caution of the race on lap 14 when Kyle Andress was turned around in turn two.

The final restart proved no issue for DeBoer who pulled away to his second career win. Rob Hoskins drove past Ferguson to get the runner-up spot in the closing laps. Blake Bomberry Jr. and Ryan Beagle rounded out the top-five. Jim Lampman, Logan Shwedyk and Dave Bailey took heat race victories earlier in the night.

HRW Automotive Mini Stocks

Andy Ryckman and Gillian Hils brought the HRW Automotive Mini Stock Feature to the green flag for the championship-deciding 15-lap main event. Hils jumped out to an early advantage and opened a half-straightaway lead by lap three before the first caution of the race when Jason Tolton came to a stop at the top of turn one. On the restart, Kyle Wert challenged Hils for the lead and took the point on lap four before the caution flag waved again for Patrick Abrahamsson, who had spun on the backstretch. The ensuing restart saw a red flag when Sean Iftody rolled upside down after contact with the outside wall on the backstretch.

The final restart with five laps complete saw Hils and Wert battle for the lead with Wert holding onto the top spot. In the battle for the championship, Hils was trying to outrun Matt Nuell. While Wert drove away over the final five laps to a full straightaway lead, Hils held onto the second spot ahead of third-place finisher Jonathan Ayrton. Mike Sarantakos and Fabio Olivieri rounded out the top-five. Nuell held onto a sixth-place finish to unofficially earn the championship by a single point over Hils.

Hils, Rob Twitchett, Kevin Thorne and Mike Evers took heat race victories to begin the night while Jason Tolton and Tim DeBoer won the B-Mains.

Up Next at Ohsweken Speedway

Ohsweken Speedway returns to action for its final night of the season with the 14th annual Arrow Express Canadian Sprint Car Nationals presented by Nitro 54 Variety. (September 7, 2018) – Insta-Panels presented Sprint Car Championship night and the Brock Leonard Memorial as 124 cars signed in across four weekly divisions on Friday, September 7 at Ohsweken Speedway. It was the final points night of the season for Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars and the Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars. It was also the prestigious 50-lap Brock Leonard Memorial for the Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks/Insta-Panels Duel on the Dirt Series.

Prior to the action on the track, fans had the chance to meet some of their favourite drivers behind the grandstand area for autographs and had the opportunity to purchase some of their favourite drivers’ merchandise in the final Racers’ Marketplace of the season.

At intermission, the Strickland’s GMC Crate Engine draw took place, with all drivers who had 100% attendance in the Thunder Stock division in 2018 entered to win. Track owner Glenn Styres pulled Jim Lampman’s name as the winner of the new engine.

On the track, it was Rockwall, Texas native Sam Haferetepe Jr. who claimed his fourth career win in the Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Car Feature. Sixteen-year-old Josh Hansen scored his first career Sprint Car win in the Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Car and Action Sprint Tour combined Feature.

For the stock cars, it was Chris Hale who became the eighth different winner in as many races for Thunder Stock Brock Leonard Memorial while Jason Tolton closed out the night with a win in the HRW Automotive Mini Stock Feature.

Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars

Jim Huppunen and Sam aefertepe Jr. led the field to the green flag for the Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Car A-Feature. The opening lap caused some chaos as Mack DeMan nearly spun in turn one while Shawn Sliter and Scott Burk did get turned around to bring out the first yellow.

On the complete restart, Hafertepe jumped out to an early advantage over Huppunen while fourth-starting Dylan Westbrook quickly raced into second. Haferetepe of Rockwall, Texas, quickly caught traffic which slowed his pace and prevented him from growing his lead over Westbrook.

Still, Hafertepe found a way around each lapped car to keep his lead at 1.9 seconds at the halfway mark. With four laps to go, that gap narrowed to just over one second before the final caution with four laps remaining when Shawn Sliter stopped in turn three. The restart provided Hafertepe a clear track and saw him drive away to his fourth career Ohsweken win over Westbrook, Mikey Kruchka, Mack DeMan and Scott Kreutter.

Hafertepe, Mitch Brown and Westbrook were heat race winners earlier in the night. Hafertepe was the Ackland Insurance Top Gun after earning the most passing points in heat race action.

Westbrook’s second-place finish was enough to officially make him the Ohsweken 360 Sprint Car track champion for the second straight year, joining only his car owner Glenn Styres as the only drivers to win consecutive Sprint Car championships at Ohsweken.

Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars/Action Sprint Tour

Lucas Smith and Liam Martin lined up on the front row for the 20-lap championship Feature in the Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars and Action Sprint Tour division. The opening lap was disastrous for championship contenders Aaron Turkey and Jacob Dykstra, who were collected in a backstretch incident that also involved Trevor Young. Both drivers suffered race-ending damage, eliminating them from championship contention with the Action Sprint Tour and Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars.

The ensuing restart saw Martin drive to the inside in a bid for the lead, but Smith held off the challenge with a strong drive up top. Then on lap four it was Baily Heard driving to second past Martin following an excellent multi-lap battle before the caution waved the following lap when Holly Porter spun to bring out the yellow flag.

The restart saw Heard challenge Smith to the inside and the two drivers raced side-by-side until the next caution on lap eight when Brad Herron spun in turn three. The final restart on lap eight saw Heard try to drive outside Smith in turn one, but the challenge was unsuccessful.

Smith opened a considerable lead before ninth-starting Josh Hansen raced past Heard to take second on lap 14. Then, on lap 17, Smith stepped over the banking in turn three, allowing Hansen to use the bottom lane and drive to the lead. Smith held on to the second spot, but the 16-year-old Hansen ran a flawless final three laps to score his first career Sprint Car win while Smith settled for second ahead of Shone Evans.

With his third-place finish, Evans claimed both the Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Car 2018 Championship and the inaugural Action Sprint Tour powered by RaceRivalz.com championship. Ryan Hunsinger drove from the 21st starting spot to fourth while Baily Heard took a fifth-place result.
Liam Martin, Jordan Hill and Hannah Ferrell were Heat Race winners earlier in the night while Aaron Turkey won the B-Main.

Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks/Insta-Panels Duel on the DIrt Series

Lee Winger and Steve Shaw paced the field to the green flag for the 50-lap Brock Leonard Memorial for the Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks/Insta-Panels Duel on the DIrt Series with Shaw taking the early lead.

Shaw paced the field through the first caution on lap six before Chris Hale drove to the inside of Shaw in a battle for the lead that continued for the next 19 laps with Blake Bomberry Jr. and Dave Bailey also challenging for second following a lap 19 restart.

At the halfway mark, Shaw continued to lead Bomberry, Hale, Ryan Beagle and Bailey. While Shaw stayed out front, he was never able to pull away by more than a couple of car lengths from a variety of second-place runners.
With 12 laps to go, Hale tried the outside for the first time to get past Shaw and drove to the point on lap 38 by just a nose. Hale was able to pull away while Shaw fought off Beagle for second. As the action heated up, so did the temperature under the hood of Teeple’s No.11 car. A fire under the hood of Teeple’s car brought out the red flag with six laps remaining.

The stop didn’t bother Hale as he led the final six laps, including another restart, to score his third straight Feature win. Shaw took second ahead of Beagle while 24th starting Jonny Lowenberg was fourth and Brighton Speedway regular Justin Ramsay rounded out the top-five.

Chris Hale, Ken Sargent, Dave Bailey and Steve Shaw took heat race victories earlier in the night while Wade Purchase and Jay Liverance won the B-Mains.

HRW Automotive Mini Stocks

The HRW Automotive Mini Stock feature started with Jeff Elsliger and Cody Sommerville on the front row. The first lap saw Rob Twitchett and Mike Taylor come together in turn one for the first caution. When the race resumed, it was Fabio Olivieri who jumped out to lead the opening lap after starting third.

Kevin Thorne joined Olivieri in a two-car breakaway up front while a swarm of six cars battled two and three-wide for the lead five laps in to the event. The caution waved again on lap six when Kyle Wert spun in turn four and collected Cody Sommerville with damage to his right-front wheel.

On the restart, Olivieri maintained the point, but Mike Sarantakos was able to take second briefly before Kevin Thorne retook the spot. The battle for third was a four-car battle between Sarantakos, Tim DeBoer, Wayde Thorne and Jason Tolton.

On lap 11, Kevin Thorne and Jason Tolton made it three-wide to the inside of Olivieri. Then, on lap 12, Olivieri slipped over the cushion in turn two, allowing Tolton to take the lead and Kevin Thorne to drive into second.
On the final corner, Kevin Thorne drove to the inside to try and steal the win, but Tolton held the middle line and claimed the win. Olivieri took third over Sarantakos while Matt Nuell drove to a fifth-place finish on just three wheels after losing his left-rear with two laps to go.

Olivieri, Tolton, Dusty DeBoer and Matt Nuell took heat race victories to begin the night while Sean Iftody won the B-Main.

Up Next at Ohsweken Speedway

Ohsweken Speedway returns to action for its biggest weekend of the season on Friday, September 14 for the Burger Barn Night Before the Nationals and Saturday, September 15 for the Arrow Express 14th Canadian Sprint Car Nationals. (September 6, 2018) – Another exciting night of action is ready to roll at Ohsweken Speedway as Insta-Panels presents Sprint Car championship night and the Brock Leonard Memorial on Friday, September 7. Ohsweken will crown two of its four champions by night’s end as Friday’s race marks the final points night for the Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars and the Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars. The Action Sprint Tour powered by RaceRivalz.com will also make its third and final appearance of the season as it crowns its inaugural champion as well.

Also on the card is the prestigious 50-lap Brock Leonard Memorial for the Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks as well as a regular 15-lap event for the HRW Automotive Mini Stocks. The Brock Leonard Memorial is one of the biggest races of the year for the Thunder Stocks and is run annually in honour of the late Brock Leonard, a longtime Speedway official and father of Ohsweken race director, Doug Leonard, who passed away in 2012. The race is also the second of four combined races for the Insta-Panels Duel on the Dirt Series.

Prior to the action on the track, a pre-race autograph session will take place behind the main grandstand with select drivers and their cars, allowing fans to meet some of their favourite drivers right before they hit the track. The final Racer’s Marketplace of the season will also take place behind the main grandstand to allow fans the opportunity to purchase their favourite driver’s apparel on the grandstands side. It all gets underway when the grandstand gates open at 6:00pm.

Race time is 7:30pm. Adult admission is just $14 while Seniors (65+) and Youths (13-17) are only $10. Kids aged 7-12 are only $3 and Kids 6 and under are free. This pricing is in effect for all weekly Friday Night Excitement shows in 2018.

Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars

The 2018 championship has already been decided in the Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Car division as point leader Dylan Westbrook has locked up his second straight title. Westbrook has a 115-point lead over Jim Huppunen entering this week’s action, with only 85 points awarded to the race winner, making the lead insurmountable. There is still plenty to race for, however. Huppunen’s advantage for second is just six points over Cory Turner. Mack DeMan is fourth and 22 points back of Turner while Steve Lyons is fifth, just one point ahead of Ryan Turner. Mikey Kruchka, Mike Thorne, Tyler Hendricks and Jamie Turner round out the top-10 entering the final night of points racing.

Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars

In the Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Car division, Shone Evans has a stranglehold on the championship title. Aaron Turkey remains mathematically alive in the title hunt, but faces a 44-point deficit entering the final night of competition. Evans needs to finish 21st or better in the A-Feature to guarantee the title. The two drivers will also be battling for a separate championship as the race doubles as the final points event on the inaugural Action Sprint Tour, where Evans leads Turkey by just eight points. Evans needs a finish of third or better to secure the AST championship.

In the Ohsweken standings, Turkey has only a 14-point gap over teammate Holly Porter for second. Rounding out the top-five are Hannah Ferrell and Lucas Smith, who separated by just four points for fourth. Jacob Dykstra, Dereck Lemyre, Jesse Costa, Josh Hansen and DJ Christie round out the top-10 in the standings.

Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks

The Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks have two more points nights in order to decide their championship, including the 50-lap and high unpredictable Brock Leonard Memorial. Friday’s race marks seventh edition of the race in honour of former track official Brock Leonard. Past winners of the race include last year’s winner Ryan Beagle, Ryan Dinning, Karl Sault, Lee Winger, Ryan Turner and Brad Herron. No driver has won the event more than once.

Entering the event, Dave Bailey holds a 93-point advantage over Trevor DeBoer and 94-point gap over Logan Shwedyk. A finish of third or better in the Brock Leonard Memorial would guarantee Bailey his fourth-straight Thunder Stock track championship before he takes the green flag in the season finale on September 14. Fourth in the standings is Ken Sargent, just 15 points back of Shwedyk for third while Christopher Hale completes the top-five. Ryan Beagle, Jim Lampman, Mark Bazuin, Billy Bleich Jr. and Blake Bomberry Jr. round out the top-10 entering this week’s 50-lapper.

HRW Automotive Mini Stocks

Unlike the other three divisions, the HRW Automotive Mini Stock title is still very much up for grabs with two races to go. Gillian Hils leads Matt Nuell by only two points in the standings with Sean Iftody trailing in third only 24 points back of the lead, a gap that he is capable of overcoming in two weeks. Dusty DeBoer and Jonathan Ayrton round out the top-five and are still mathematically alive in the championship chase. Completing the top-10 are Kyle Wert, Mike Sarantakos, Tim DeBoer, Tristan Da Silva and Martin Schroeder.
--------------------

About Insta-Insulation/Insta-Panels: Insta-Insulation has been satisfying customers since 1991, delivering superior service, expertise, and insulation products in the Greater Toronto Area and throughout Southwestern Ontario.
Ultimate Battle: Three Drivers Vying For Inaugural Action Sprint Tour Crown Friday at Ohsweken

By Clayton Johns

OHSWEKEN, Ont. (September 6, 2018) – The Action Sprint Tour powered by RaceRivalz.com is set to conclude its inaugural season when it wraps up its 2018 campaign on Friday, September 7 at the same track where it all began: Ohsweken Speedway. Two drivers are in contention for the championship title in the first season of travelling Crated Sprint Car racing in Ontario.

The main title contenders are Shone Evans and Aaron Turkey while Jacob Dykstra remains mathematically in contention. Evans holds an eight-point advantage in the championship standings entering the deciding race, which provides the Scotland, Ont. native a slim cushion for the final 20-lap Feature. Dykstra is 24 points back of Evans and remains mathematically alive, but will need some help in order to capture the title.

How They Got Here

Shone Evans has had a tremendous season with the Action Sprint Tour. The veteran driver collected three wins this season at three different tracks, with victories coming at Merrittville Speedway, South Buxton Raceway and Humberstone Speedway. In nine races so far, he has finished on the podium six times and in the top-five seven times. His only finish outside the top-10 came at Humberstone on June 17, an 18th-place finish. All together, Evans’ season behind the wheel of the Total Rentals/Ackland Insurance No.87x has been impressive. He controls his own fate on Friday night and can clinch the title simply by finishing third or better or simply ahead of both Turkey and Dykstra.

Aaron Turkey has also had an impressive season in his Styres Brothers Racing No.68 car. The veteran driver started the year with a win in the tour’s first ever race at Ohsweken back in May. He also scored a win almost exactly one month later when he captured a June win at Humberstone. Since that victory, he has not finished worse than fifth, brining him to a total of eight top-five results in nine starts. His only finish outside the top-five was a DNF at South Buxton in the third race of the year, the only finish keeping him from the points lead. Turkey will likely need his fifth podium finish of the year or his third win in order to win the title this Friday night. He’ll need to finish a minimum of four spots better than Evans to claim the title.

The third and final championship contender is Port Colborne, Ont. teenager Jacob Dykstra. The driver of the Lakeshore Gators No.5d has had a breakout season. Dykstra surprised many with a pair of wins on the tour this season. The 24-point gap will be a challenging one to overcome, but in addition to his win at Merrittville, Dykstra also has an AST win at Ohsweken as well as a weekly win with the Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars to build on this week. Dykstra certainly has the talent to pull off a miracle on Friday night, especially if the car is right, but will need some help, likely in the form of some competitor misfortune, in order to claim the crown.

Championship night at Ohsweken Speedway is presented by Insta-Panels. Race time is scheduled for 7:30pm. A pre-race autograph session with select drivers will take place behind the main grandstand as well as a Racer’s Marketplace, where fans will have a chance to buy their favourite driver’s merchandise.
