Phil Potts Starts Season With Second-Place Finish

BRIGHTON, Ont. – April 30, 2017 – Phil Potts started his season off on the right foot by earning a second-place finish in the Vanderlaan Building Products Pro Late Model Feature at Brighton Speedway’s 50th anniversary season opener on Saturday night.

The podium finish for Potts, driving his Vanderlaan/Brighton Recycling No.29, is exactly how he and his Fowl Mood Race Team wanted to start the season.

“We had said all week we wanted a top-three,” Potts said. “We got a second. We’ll be very happy if we can keep pulling this off. We will make a couple more adjustments and hopefully be better for next week.”

Potts started second in his qualifying heat and raced at the front with polesitter Charlie Sandercock early on a tacky racetrack. The two veteran drivers and championship favourites made contact midway through the heat, which pushed Potts back to third.

“My car is always tight on the tacky tracks but overall still felt great in the heat race,” Potts said. “In corner one, Charlie and I rubbed each other which allowed (Steve) Baldwin by as well. We raced hard but finished third.”

The third-place run in the qualifying heat placed Potts in the front-half of the field for the 30-lap feature. He had high hopes of placing his Longhorn Chassis in Victory Lane and came close, but fell just short. Nonetheless, Potts was satisfied with his effort.

“The car started off a touch loose in the feature, which we thought might happen as we waited for the hard tires to come in,” Potts said. “We ran fifth or sixth for what felt like forever. We all ran tight and there just wasn't room to move.”

“Midway through the Feature, we started to move up even though the car was still a touch tight. We were running okay, but a third-place car at best until Charlie Sandercok had a left-rear tire going down. We took his spot but (Adam) Turner was too far gone to catch.”

Potts hopes to duplicate his opening night effort while improving by one spot when he retakes the track next Saturday, May 6. Race time is 7:00pm.

Danny O’Brien Score Spectacular Memorial Cup Win At Mohawk Raceway

KINGSTON, Ont. – MAY 30, 2016 – Danny O’Brien got faster as the night wore on and drove past Billy Dunn to his second win of the season and first Memorial Cup win since 2014 on Friday night at Mohawk International Raceway.

The Kingston, Ont. native claimed the prestigious 50-lap event at the Hogansburg, NY track after passing Watertown, NY native Billy Dunn following a lap 42 restart. O’Brien’s win was the result of an improving car towards the end of the race, he said.

“We were getting better and we had a yellow at lap 42. When they dropped the green, at that point in the race my car was getting better every lap and we were able to run (Dunn) down,” O’Brien said following the victory.

“It’s kind of a neat race. I was able to win it two years ago, so it was one I had penciled in on my calendar that I really wanted to win, so it was nice to get it.”

Following his Memorial Cup win, O’Brien returned to his home Brockville Ontario Speedway on Saturday night for another 50-lap race in the first round of the Ogilvie’s Triple Crown Series. He finished fourth after some mid-race damage derailed his full effort.

“That was a bit of a struggle. We missed the setup just a little bit. We were too tight. I got messing around and about lap 20 we bent the front axle a little bit. It was a struggle the rest of the race. We just held on for fourth,” O’Brien said.

The pair of 50-lap races played in to O’Brien’s hand. O’Brien has grown to like the middle distance races. It’s longer than the usual 30-lap races, but shorter than 100-lap tour races.

“I like the 50 lap races. It’s only 20 more laps than usual, but it gives you a little extra time to settle in and get racing,” O’Brien said.

O’Brien claimed two wins in seven starts during the month of May, an impressive start to the young season for the veteran driver.

“It makes it all worthwhile when you do all that work over the winter and put in all the time and effort. To get two wins in May is good. Now we can move on in to June and try to keep it going,” an excited O’Brien said.

“It’s the whole package it takes to win. The guys are working hard right now, the car is working well. We’re putting a lot of effort in to every detail and it’s showing in our results.

O’Brien will return to action on Saturday night at Brockville as he continues his quest to defend the 358 Modified track championship.

Follow Danny O’Brien’s 2016 season on Facebook by ‘Liking’ his page at facebook.com/DannyOBrienRacing. The Danny O’Brien Racing team will debut a new website in the coming weeks.

Danny O’Brien’s 2016 DIRTcar 358 Modified season is supported by several dedicated corporate sponsors, including: 1000 Islands RV Centre, ATC World Class Trailers, Bob FM, Ambush, Pat’s Auto Centre, Bicknell Racing Products, Heather-Lynn Topping, Integra Shocks, Northwood 2 Construction, and Snap-On Adam Way.

Prepared By Clayton Johns Media
claytonjohns@hotmail.com

Time for making plans to ensure our season goes smoothly.

We have been taking a good look at our race night program to ensure we can get in a good nights racing without keeping the young kids up too late on a school night. As I recall last summer when we were starting at 7pm we were often finishing up the last race by 9:00 or 9:15 and so we stretched to program out a bit with ribbon presentations and lots of visiting. We will have another class this year but we do not want to keep the younger drivers up any later so we will be modifying the 2009 nightly schedule slightly to ensure we have alert drivers.

The objectives were. Don’t start too early- don’t run too late- provide practice time to those who want it- make the qualifiers count for something- get the youngest/inexperienced drivers the most track time-have some weeks off- have some races at different locations-have the store open for sign in-have more room for spectators -have a consistent race night and program.

The track will be available for practice by appointment 6 days a week so that new drivers can get all the track time they need to feel ready to race. There will be optional practice sessions at the beginning of each race night. Those who wish to arrive at the track later, can. Ribbon presentations from the previous week will occur at the driver meeting at 7pm, with racing starting immediately after.

Although we may very well be able to run the program more quickly than listed, it will give a guideline to those trying to decide just how late they need to be at the track. There will not be after race presentations so after a drivers final race he/she will be able to load up and head for home or stick around and watch the faster races and visit with friends.

Suggested schedule will be as follows

Race Nightly Schedule

Sign in 6pm to 7pm

6:30 optional beginner practice

6:40 optional junior practice

6:50 optional senior practice

7:00 Drivers meeting and Ribbon Presentation

7:10 Beginner 10 lap

7:20 Junior 10 lap

7:30 Senior 10 lap

7:40 Beginner 20 lap

7:55 Junior 25 lap

8:10 Senior 25 lap

8:25 Expert 10 lap

8:35 Beginner 20 lap

8:50 Junior 30 lap

9:05 Senior 35 lap

9:20 Expert 50 lap
