THOROLD, Ont. (July 24, 2018) – Following a lengthy month-long pause in the schedule, the Action Sprint Tour powered by RaceRivalz.com is gearing up to resume action when the tour visits Merrittville Speedway in Thorold, Ont. on Saturday, July 28 for the second time this season.

In the Series’ second-ever race during the May Victoria Day long weekend, Shone Evans of Scotland, Ont. became the tour’s second winner after Aaron Turkey won the inaugural event at Ohsweken Speedway three days earlier. The tour then raced on back-to-back weekends with a trip to South Buxton Raceway on June 9 where Evans scored his second win and to Humberstone Speedway on June 17 when Turkey returned the favour with his second triumph.

However, after four races, it is St. Thomas, Ont. driver Jesse Costa who leads the championship standings. Evans trails the high-point man by just 15 markers with six scheduled races remaining on the tour. Turkey currently sits third, just four points back of Evans while his Styres Racing Teammate Holly Porter of Delhi, Ont. is currently fourth and only four points back of Turkey.

Rounding out the top-five are Stouffville, Ont. native Ryan Hunsinger and Fonthill, Ont. driver Steven Beckett, who sit deadlocked for fifth with 260 points each. Jacob Dykstra, who earned a second-place finish in the last tour race at Humberstone, Brad Herron, Jerry Hill and Paul Klager complete the current top-10 in the championship standings.

As the Series gets set to visit Merrittville, drivers are gearing up for the busy stretch of four races in 21 days that it will begin. Following Saturday’s race at Merrittville, the tour makes its second stop at Ohsweken on August 3 before a return appearance at Humbertsone on Sunday, August 12 and then makes its inaugural stop at Brighton Speedway on August 18.

CAISTOR CENTRE, Ont. – June 26, 2017 – Cory Turner returned to 360 Sprint Car competition at Merrittville Speedway with the Empire Super Sprints last Saturday night. The Caistor Centre, Ont. driver drove his KT Tobacco/Silo Wireless No.97 Hill’s Racing ride to a seventh-place finish in his second start of the year at Merrittville. Friday’s scheduled event at Ohsweken Speedway was rained out.

Turner started the night with a fourth-place time trial effort and then was the beneficiary of the number four inversion pill that put him on the pole for his heat race.

“We were really good in the heat race. I won by almost a straightaway,” Turner said. “The cushion was halfway up the track and it was pretty big. Anybody who was fast was up on the cushion. That’s where I ran in the heat.”

The heat win solidified Turner’s spot in the redraw for the main event. He pulled the third starting spot and lined up inside the second row for the 25-lap main event.

“I started third and I was okay,” Turner said. “I stayed in front of Westbrook for a few laps and then he got by me and ran the leaders down. I was as far back as eighth or ninth and it was almost like the bleeder kicked in and it got some air out of the right rear and I started driving by guys again.”

While Turner nearly slipped outside the top-10 at one point, the car got stronger late in the main event. Turner’s late resurgence solidified his eighth top-10 finish of the season.

“I was back up to sixth with two laps to go and Coleman Gulick threw a big slide job at me and got me in turns one and two,” Turner said. “I felt like I just needed to be a little tighter in the centre of the corner and I think we would have been good. Overall, I was pretty happy.”

It was the first of three opportunities for Turner to race at Merrittville with his 360ci Sprint Car this season. He earned a third-place finish back in April before claiming a top-10 last weekend at his former home track.

“I like that place,” Turner said. “In the Feature it was just a little bit slicker than I thought it was going to be. It was slick to a cushion in turns one and two, but there wasn’t much of one in three and four.”

“Anytime you run in the top-10 with the ESS it’s a solid showing,” continued Turner. “I was really happy. I just didn’t tighten the car up quite enough. We love going to Merrittville because we saw a ton of family and friends.”

Turner plans to be in action for two or three events this weekend. He will race Friday in weekly action at Ohsweken Speedway. He also intends to compete in an ESS Speedweeks event or with the NRA Sprint Invaders. Get Cory Turner’s most up to date schedule by following him on social media.

CAISTOR CENTRE, Ont. – April 21, 2017 – After a long off-season, Team Turner Racing is excited to kick off their 2017 racing season with all three TTR Sprint Cars in action at Merrittville Speedway’s Spring Sizzler this Saturday night.



Jamie, Ryan and Cory Turner will all be in attendance on Saturday to challenge for a victory in the season opening race for the Patriot Sprint Tour Canada series. The team had the opportunity to test last weekend at Merrittville and all three drivers are confident entering the first race of the year following their winter work.



“I think we worked extra hard this year,” said Ryan Turner, who will drive the Ace’s Bar & Grill No.91 again in 2017. “We’re a little more prepared than we are normally. We had a couple of issues at practice, but the good thing is we could run practice and get those issues fixed so we could run this weekend’s race.”



All three Turners have an abundance of experience at Merrittville from street stocks and Modifieds to Sportsman and Sprint Cars. Knowing the fast way around the tricky 3/8-mile oval can be a big benefit and should offer an edge to the Turners.



“I have a lot of experience at Merrittville, but in Modifieds,” said Jamie Turner, pilot of the Insta-Panels No.11.  “The track hasn’t changed much. I still feel very comfortable there.”



“It’s basically calm and patience,” said Ryan. “You have to know the line. Turn four is a bit different and a lot of people have issues with it.”



A trip to Merrittville means battling the racetrack as much as the competition, but the Turners are comfortable they have the tools to tackle the Thorold, Ont. track.



“Generally this race, or anytime we go to Merrittville, I’m ready for it to get slick,” said Cory Turner, driver of the KT Tobacco No.97. “You try not to tighten the car up too much and make sure you have good forward drive. You want to make smart decisions and try not to overdrive the car.”



“It’s just being really smooth,” echoed Jamie. “The slicker it is, the smoother you have to be. When it gets that slick, it definitely won’t be horsepower. It’s all handling.”



All three Turner team members are focused on getting the most out of their equipment in their season debut. While it won’t change their preparation, they are keenly aware they face some stiff competition from the Patriot Sprint Tour contingent as well as the local field.



“It’s always a little tougher with the Patriot Sprint Tour coming in,” Ryan said. “I think you just kind of know who you’re racing against. You can’t make as many mistakes and you have to be on your game, but I think we still prepare the same way. We’re always trying to do the best we can and have the best car we can every time we hit the track.”



All three Team Turner Racing drivers are looking forward to firing their 700 horsepower engines and regaining their competitive racing spirit. Joining Team Turner Racing and the Patriot Sprint Tour Canada series at Merrittville Speedway’s Spring Sizzler are the DIRTcar 358 Modifieds, DIRTcar Sportsman and TUSA Mod Lites. CAISTOR CENTRE, Ont. – April 21, 2017 – After a long winter, race season is finally here for Cory Turner and his No.97 KT Tobacco Sprint Car team who will begin their 2017 season on Saturday, April 22 with the Patriot Sprint Tour at Merrittville Speedway’s Spring Sizzler.



Turner got a night of practice under his belt at Merrittville’s open practice last weekend. After a successful test session, Turner is excited to start a new season at the 3/8-mile track he knows well.



“It’s always good to get back out and turn some laps,” Turner said. “Merrittville’s a place where we’ve run well before. I’ve got a lot of laps there because I used to run street stocks there.”



The first night of competition always brings plenty of excitement and this year is no different. Turner is optimistic about the first night of competition, but knows not to focus too heavily on the result.



“Everybody wants to do well the first night out,” Turner said. “You always want to start off on the right foot. It’s not indicative of your year, but nonetheless you want to run well.”



Merrittville’s Spring Sizzler often attracts some of the top Sprint Car talent across the northeast and produces plenty of exciting action. Turner is ready for whatever the track may throw at him, but believes he has a good handle on Merrittville’s surface to help him finish at the front.

Turner enters this weekend’s race knowing he had a strong car at Merrittville in his last visit there in September before an unfortunate wreck ended his night early. He’ll ride that high into Saturday’s race intending to secure another solid run.



“I’m looking forward to getting back racing again,” Turner said. “I missed the competitive aspect of it. I feel I kind of let one get away last year at Merrittville. We were real quick and I was real happy with the car that night. Usually a lot of our sponsors come out the first night and it’s always good to have a good run.”

Sterling Silver Award and Triple Crown Series Finale among highlights of Brian's Tire Repair Autograph Night

Thorold, Ontario – The Championship Chase for all of Merrittville Speedway's 5 Lucas Oil Weekly Racing Series Divisions will conclude Saturday August 30th when Brian's Tire Repair presents Autograph Night and three history-laden events.

With the final point event for the Rick's Delivery Sportsman Division will have drivers in the run for the annual Sterling Silver Award – the Main Event for the Bobcat of Hamilton 358 Modifieds will have the John Spencer Memorial up for grabs. Rain-delayed from Avondale Food Stores Night

– the overall points race for the Turn 4 Collision 4 Cylinders will conclude with the finale of the Triple Crown Series as well.
Rounding out the night are the Hoosier Stocks and the J&S Heating and Air Conditioning Modified Lites as well.
2014 is the 25th edition of the Sterling Silver Award and of all the previous winners - Cody McPherson, Brad Rouse and last year's winner Justin Sharp are still active in the division.

The Sterling Silver Award is an annual award created by former Sportsman Competitor Ken Walsh in 1990 after the St. Catharines resident got his start in racing and had so much help from Bill Willard Senior. Walsh's efforts honor his memory.
Beginning in the 1950's the Willard family got its start in the local racing scene when Bill Willard Senior quickly became an accomplished car owner for drivers including Don Taylor, Bev MacTavish, Stan Friesen, George Winger and Terry Edwards while at the same time providing towing service through Willard & Son Towing which is now CAA Niagara.

Fast forward to the 1970's and the cars Bill Sr. and his son Al would own and maintain would be those driven by the family's third generation ... Bill Willard and later his sister Tammy. Today Bill's son BJ has run a limited schedule with his cousin Cody McPherson won the King of the Crates Champion last weekend and leads the Overall Points going into the final point event.

The Season Point Finale for the Bobcat of Hamilton 358 Modifiieds honors John Spencer who was an up and coming racer who passed away as a result of a racing accident in 1953 at the former Stamford Park in his home town of Niagara Falls. Later that season and to coincide with the final points event of the season for the Modifieds, his crew created an Annual Memorial Award.

Presented annually until the 1965 season, the award was lost until 1999 when former Merrittville owner Ken Kavanagh and his son – Reunion Committee Chairman Rick recovered it and restored it in time for presentation once again in 1999.

Three drivers have won the Spencer Memorial twice beginning with Murray Stricker (1954 and 1955) with George Winger also taking back to back wins (1958 and 1959) and in the modern era 2008 and 2011 winner Larry Lampman. Mike Bowman has won it three times with Pete Bicknell taking top spot on 6 occasions.

In addition to Jerry Winger, one time winners include former drivers Bill Rafter, Sandy McPherson and Lloyd Holt. Chad Brachmann, Fred Carleton and last year's winner Mat Williamson are still active and would like to add their names a second time.

In the overall points – Williamson leads Brachmann going into the final point event.

Other races to watch is the Turn 4 Collision 4 Cylinder Triple Crown Series in addition to the overall as Leroy Buscumb looks to stay on top in both while the Hoosier Stock Title has three drivers with a shot – leader Mark Fawcett, defending champion Kevin Knapp and Billy Hogue.
Jeff May has a comfortable lead in the J&S Heating and Air Conditioning Modified Lites over multi-time Champion Josh Sliter.
