Border Patrol – A weekly look at racing from both sides of the 1000 Islands

Craig Revelle – August 8, 2010

It is hard to believe that July is over with, and we are now into the final full month of the season for points at all of our local tracks. Sure, there are races after Labor Day weekend, but the overall track championships are the goals for most teams going into the season, and they will be decided in less than a month.

Since last week’s column, I attended the World of Outlaws Sprint Car series race in Fulton, New York. Despite the nearly two-hour delay due to weather, the show went on, and it was 20 time World of Outlaws Champion Steve Kinser in victory lane at the end of the night. Kinser finished ahead of Jason Sides, Craig Dollansky, Kraig Kinser and Sam Hafertepe Jr. With the rain making the track super fast early on, Hafertepe Jr., also set a new Fulton Speedway track record.

The weekend began with a full show of racing at Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park in Lafargeville, New York on Friday night. The King of the North Country Series for the Sportsman and Street Stocks were joined by regular show for the Modifieds, IMCA Modifieds, Late Models, Thunder Cars, and the Mod Lites.

In the Modified feature, Rob Bellinger held off Billy Dunn for his second straight win and third of the season. A strong Small Block contingent made up the rest of the top five with Lafargeville, New York resident Zach Aubertine finishing third, and was the top Small Block in the field. Matt Billings finished fourth and Tim O’Brien competed the top five.

In the Sportsman feature, Matt Hulsizer picked up the win over Beth Schneider. Mike Mainse, only having just a couple starts at Can Am came from the back to finish third. Brandon Hagan and Joe Cook finished fourth and fifth respectively. With a third place finish for Mainse, he moved into the lead in the Sportsman King of the North Country Series, with just one race remaining at Brockville the following night. Steve Barber of Lansdowne, finished ninth, and Josh Kane was caught up in a wreck early in the race and was unable to continue.

Taylor Caprara won his first Street Stock race of the season, JJ Courcy won the IMCA Modified feature. Both Lee Gill and Zak Petrie continued their domination of their respective Late Model and Thunder Car divisions, and Rich Rainville was the Mod Lite feature winner.

At Brockville on Saturday night, it was a night of firsts, as both the Modified and Sportsman winners won their first ever features at the BOS in their divisions, and for Aikens, it was the first Sportsman feature win of his career. In the Modifieds, it was Tim O’Brien picking up the win over Kyle Dingwall, Pat O’Brien, Gage Morin and Bobby Herrington. The Sportsman first time winner was Dana Aikens, a three-year veteran of the class, picked up the popular win. Aikens led all 25 laps, and was also crowned King of the North Country Sportsman series champion. Aikens held off challenges by Dylan Evoy, and then Chris Herbison. Herbison finished in second, Evoy third, Chris Raabe was fourth, and Mike Mainse finished in fifth.

Todd Raabe won the Street Stock main event, which also gave him the win in the King of the North Country Street Stock Series. Nolan Swamp won the 4cylinder “rookie” feature.

The Cornwall Motor Speedway also had a full show scheduled on Sunday evening, but Mother Nature had other plans, as rain most of the day forced track officials to cancel the show early Sunday afternoon.

Plenty of big events highlight the remainder of August at all local tracks. Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park host the first annual Chapman’s Can Am Froggy Jam on August 22nd. Tickets for this event, featuring Gretchen Wilson, Jamey Johnson, Chris Cagle and Easton Corbin are just $50 and can be purchased at Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park on race nights, at various stores in Watertown area, or right from the Can Am website, www.canammotorsports.com.

Brockville has a big race this coming Thursday night, August 12th, with an appearance of the O’Reilly All Star Late Models. The Sportsman and Street Stocks will join the Late Models on the evening’s schedule. Cornwall has a few weeks of racing left before the season ends Labor Day weekend, which will be a 100 lap 358 Modified DIRTcar Series race.

This coming weekend will be a busy one, with the aforementioned O’Reilly All Star Late Models at Brockville on Thursday night, followed by a regular show at Can Am on Friday night, then back to Brockville on Saturday night, before heading to Cornwall to conclude the weekend on Sunday. If Mother Nature co-operates, the race at Cornwall this coming weekend will be my race number 53 on the season.

I hope you have enjoyed my weekly column. Any comments or suggestions can be sent to crevelle@ripnet.com or check out my new website, www.finishlinewebdesign.ca

Tim O’Brien wins first ever Modified feature at Brockville. He is with his Mother and Father in Victory Lane. (Rick Young Photo)

FASTRAK Headed To Historic ELDORA Speedway
for 2nd Annual “Chassis Challenge”

Carnesville, GA (July 28) FASTRAK officials, teams and drivers are loading up for the return to Eldora Speedway for the 2nd Annual FASTRAK “Chassis Challenge” weekend. Starting Friday, July 31st with a practice day, FASTRAK has lots of race related events to offer racers, crew chief’s and fans.

Racers will get to drive the historic track on Friday to familiarize them with the half-mile dirt racing facility’s layout. Crew Chiefs and their respective team members are invited to the many seminars planned by the respective chassis builders on Saturday morning. Meanwhile fans can enjoy meeting the stars of the series at two autograph sessions planned by FASTRAK. The first session will be at the Greenville Wal-Mart from 11AM until 1PM, with the second scheduled with the TOP-6 qualifiers at the FASTRAK souvenir trailer, during the heat race and consi action for the rest of the field.

FASTRAK returns to the dirt half-mile on Friday, July 31st and Saturday, August 1st for the 2nd Annual “Chassis Challenge.” The winning chassis manufacturer gets $1000 from FASTRAK and takes possession of the HUGE “Chassis Challenge Cup” Trophy until next year’s event. At which time they will return it, just like Stan Goddard at Warrior Chassis will have to do this year, and hand it to the new winner. Mind you, if Warrior can manage a repeat of last year’s results, they’ll get to be the first ever “repeat winner” of the “Chassis Challenge Cup”.

“The Big E”, as it is known in racing circles, is located in western Ohio, just outside the small town of New Weston. Eldora plays host to some of the nation’s largest dirt racing events, including “The Prelude”, “The Dream”, “The Kings Royal”, and “The World 100.” All of which attract over 20,000 spectators on an annual basis. Adding the “Chassis Challenge” to a historic and worldwide brand like Eldora Speedway has meant a lot to the success of FASTRAK.

“After last year’s “Chassis Challenge”, we gained some credibility in a lot of areas,” stated FASTRAK Founder, Stan Lester. “To be associated with such a marquee name like ‘Tony Stewart’ has been wonderful for the series. The teams and the chassis builders that take part have supported us all year and seem to really enjoy this format to recognize the chassis builders.”

The Eldora Speedway lodging page has our FASTRAK “HOST HOTEL” listed first on the page. The Botkins Budget Host INN has everything racers and fans needs in a Host Hotel; a race themed restaurant, The Finish Line Bar & Grille; low cost rooms, starting at $32; big rig and hauler parking, 14 spots; and the little in room things that make a short stay that much easier on the traveler. Don’t forget the Finish Line Bar & Grille after the Feature Race Saturday night will be available to meet and swap stories with the drivers and crews until 2:30AM.

For those of you whom have never been to Eldora Speedway, you’re in for a treat. Located at; 13929 State Road 118, in New Weston, OH, Tony Stewart’s jewel is only a short drive north from Dayton, OH (55mi) and south from Fort Wayne (65mi). Both Indianapolis, IN and Columbus, OH are under 2 hours away, with both I-75 and I-70 making it an easy drive to Eldora from almost anywhere.
