Late Model Sportsman

Saturday was round two of the Grisdale Triple Crown, and the inversion put Kelly Balson on the pole for the 75-lap main event.

Balson would lead early until Gary Elliott was able to make his way to the inside of Balson, who was freight trained back to fifth before he had a chance to get in line.

First Elliott held off a charge from Jason Shaw for the top spot, and then outpaced Kenny Forth through the middle of the event.  Jeff Stewart was next to take a stab at Elliott, the wily veteran, and Elliott kept him at bay, seeming like he was on his way to a feature win, what could have been one of the biggest in his illustrious racing career, but Paul Howse had other ideas.

Howse took a look to the outside on a restart with just over 10 to go, but wasn’t able to pull off the move.  He would drop to Gary’s rear bumper, and a few laps later struck with a strong move to the inside.  Elliott had no choice but to surrender the preferred line, but still held on to record a solid silver medal performance.  Stewart would round out the podium.

With the win Howse should take over the point lead from Shaw, who finished eighth, and will probably slide down to third in the track standings.

In the Grisdale Triple Crown Tournament standings, both Howse and Elliott should find themselves very close in points heading into the final event of the series later on in the year, and with a minor gap back to third.

See photos below, including Lyons getting spun.

TQ Midgets

Can-Am TQ Midget point leader James Grey continued in his quest to claim the 2009 championship Saturday night at Flamboro Speedway in the 25-lap main event.

In the feature, Grey started deep in the field, but had worked his way to second when the races second yellow of the night came out on lap eight.  Grey would face the task of trying to pass NASCAR Camping World Truck driver, J.R. Fitzpatrick, who was a heat winner earlier in the night.  Grey used his experience in the cars and a lightning fast setup to pass J.R. for the lead shortly after arriving on his tail.

Fitzpatrick would be later penalized for scrubbing his tires after crossing the line to get one to go on a restart and would be put to the back, but Grey was so much the class of the field that it didn’t much matter.

The race saw a scary moment on lap 18 when Mike Westwood spun off of turn two.  He was then clipped by Larry Westwood who was launched through the air.  After twirling on his wing, his car caught fire (this sequence is available for viewing at the below link).  The safety crew were on the spot quickly to extinguish the blaze.

A new challenger emerged shortly after the red flag, Rob Neely, but he was no match for Grey, who went on to claim the feature win.  Chris Holman finished third.

Grey spoke about his hot rod.  “We were on rails tonight.  They thing was handling great.  We were running 14.8’s, and I think if we went out there again by myself I might be able to get it down in the 14.7 range.”

Midget photos will be uploaded early tomorrow.  Sorry for the delay.

Thanks for the nice write up jmaudlesy.  If you could email me one of your pictures, the one of Paul and I side by side I will put it on my web site www.elliottracingteam.com   My email is gelliot@cogeco.ca
I noticed the pictures are 340 size...to fit my front page could you make them 650?

That race was the first time in 41 years that I was leading any race after 60 laps or up to 70.  My biggest feature win in Late Models was a 40 lapper, I also won a 40 lap feature in the CVM.  Once Howse got me inside I knew I couldn't hold him.
If there was one or two to go I would have dropped down on the chute to make him go outside again. The problem with doing that too soon is that it allows the rest to catch up because the race slows down, then trouble can happen quick as cars bunch up.
Anyway, I was disappointed, it was a win I needed for my career to be somewhat complete, but there is still lots of time, I'm not going anywhere. Everyone else in my crew and family were happy.
Thanks again.
