Ontario Legends Series Books a Grand Bend Speedway Double-Header

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

While other tours are slowly winding things down, teams with the Trailers Plus Ontario Legends Series are turning-up the heat as their schedule hits an action-packed home stretch. Things get underway Saturday and Sunday, September 8th and 9th with back-to-back dates at Grand Bend Speedway. Andrew McFadden – who along with Jeff Drimmie and Kevin Foisy make-up the Ontario Legends team of officials – says everyone will be looking to solidify their point positions as they head into the 2018 season finale at Peterborough Speedway’s Autumn Colours Classic.

“Like everyone else, we’ve had a couple of issues with weather along the way, but for the most part its been a great season,” Andrew McFadden said. “From our first green flag of the year, through the Canadian Asphalt Legend Car Nationals and now the closing dates of the schedule. Our teams are putting a quality product on the track any time and everywhere we race.”

Across the board, the championship point’s race is pretty tight. Only about 100 markers stand between Matt Haufe and Terry McClelland, with Kevin Foisy in between. Dawson Drimmie sits 4th and the next 4 in the rundown are less than 100 points behind. With less than a handful of events remaining on the schedule, things can change in a hurry and probably will.

This weekend’s dates for the Fall Brawl Classic at Grand Bend Speedway were originally planned to include both the oval and road course layouts at the Western Ontario venue, but those thoughts were revised and now both the Saturday and Sunday shows will be contested on the oval.
Trailers Plus Ontario Legends Series Gets Ready for a Weekend Double Header

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

Temperatures are on the rise and this weekend, the Trailers Plus Ontario Legends Series will heat things up on the race track as the popular tour hosts a pair of shows. Things kick-off Friday, June 1st at Kawartha Downs & Speedway as part of an event that also features the OSCAAR Modified and Hot Rod divisions. The next night – Saturday, June 2nd – the scene shifts to Canada’s Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval for the first of this season’s 3 Summer Toonie Nights at Peterborough Speedway. Series spokesperson Andrew McFadden – who along with Jeff Drimmie and Kevin Foisy make-up the tour’s group of officials – says the events are a warm-up for the Canadian Legends Asphalt Nationals July 13th and 14th and all teams are looking forward to getting back on the track.

“We ran into some issues with weather during the first couple of dates on the calendar, but everyone is hoping things will run clean and green for the rest of the year,” McFadden said. “It can be tough when you’re ready to race and then Mother Nature intervenes and changes the plan. Our group is really good about taking things in stride until they get a chance to light the fuse.”

Ontario Legends Series teams broke the seal on the 2018 schedule Sunday, May 20th during the Spring Velocity Weekend at Sunset Speedway. 27 teams signed-in at the venue north of Metropolitan Toronto, with 25 taking the green flag in the year’s first main event. Kevin Foisy etched his name into the record books as the new season’s first victor. Reigning series champion Matt Haufe, Wes Cuthbertson, Cole McFadden and Adam Cuthbertson rounded-out the top 5.

“Starting the calendar with close to 30 teams in the pits is a great sign of things to come,” according to McFadden. “With a field comprised of raw rookies, experienced veterans and a smattering of former champions, we’re confident that car counts should be near the quarter-century mark throughout the year.”

2018 Trailers Plus Ontario Legends Series Schedule

Saturday, May 19th: Peterborough Speedway

Cancelled - rain

Sunday, May 20th: Sunset Speedway

Main event winner: #57, Kevin Foisy

Friday, June 1st: Kawartha Speedway

Saturday, June 2nd: Peterborough Speedway

Saturday, June 16th: Peterborough Speedway

Saturday, June 23rd: Grand Bend Speedway

Sunday, June 24th: Grand Bend Speedway (road course test)

Saturday, July 7th: Sauble Speedway

Friday, July 13th: Kawartha Speedway

                                                (Canadian Legends Asphalt Nationals)

Saturday, July 14th: Peterborough Speedway

                                                (Canadian Legends Asphalt Nationals)

Saturday, July 21st: Sunset Speedway

Saturday, July 28th: Peterborough Speedway

Saturday, August 11th: Sunset Speedway

Saturday, August 18th: Sauble Speedway

                                                National Qualifier

Saturday, August 25th: Peterborough Speedway

Saturday, September 8th: Grand Bend Speedway

Sunday, September 9th: Grand Bend Speedway (road course test)

Saturday, September 22nd: Sunset Speedway

Saturday, September 29th: Flamboro Speedway

October 5th, 6th & 7th: Peterborough Speedway

                                                Autumn Colours Classic

Since 1986, series title sponsor Trailers Plus has carried a full line of new and used cargo, sport, utility, livestock trailers and car haulers to do the job. Facts that may have intimidated other drivers, but they faze Gregory Rudzik in the slightest.

The invader from Michigan – who won an east-west combination event in September at Grand Bend Speedway – started on the front row next to Wesley Cuthbertson, along with 19 others in the field who were seeking the $1,000 winner’s share of the $10,000 Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends Series total purse payout – Sunday, October 8th – at Peterborough Speedway’s Autumn Colours Classic.

From the drop of the green flag, Rudzik took control of the ‘A’ main event. A few yellow flags may have delayed his charge, but couldn’t prevent the inevitable. The driver of the #17 machine started to work through cars at the back of the field near the halfway mark and then held-off a late challenge from Cole McFadden to earn a trip to victory lane. Dave Riopelle, Miles Tyson and Parker Traves followed the lead duo across the line. Jamie Riberdy, Paul Pierik, Terry McClelland, Adam Cuthbertson, Chuck Hopkins, Jamie MacArthur, Jeff Drimmie, Jeff Forsey, Rick Eades, Cory Richardson, Joe Sherman, Dawson Drimmie, Wes Cuthbertson, Bryan Batty, Don Arnott and Shawn Murray completed the running order.

Cole McFadden had a pair of preliminary round wins. And the excitement continued Saturday, September 23rd at Sunset Speedway, as Kevin Foisy picked-up the main event victory, with Miles Tyson and Matt Haufe following the driver of the #57 machine across the line. Jeff Drimmie – who along with Foisy, Andrew McFadden and Geordie Ledson make up the Eastern Ontario Legends team officials – says everyone will be doing their homework in a quest to add an Autumn Colours Classic win to their resume.

“Even with the level of success we’ve already achieved, this could be our biggest event of the year,” Drimmie said. “One driver will be named the Autumn Colours Classic champion, while others throughout the field will have the chance to improve their position in the final 2017-point standings. It’s a win-win situation for everyone in the Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends Series.”

Matt Haufe, who started the year with an impressive 8 race win streak, currently leads the point standings and the Stittsville, Ontario Speedster looks to have a lock on the series championship. In his rear-view mirror, there is an intense battle for position being waged between Adam Cuthbertson, Jamie Riberdy, Wes Cuthbertson, Cole McFadden and Terry McClelland who are battling it out for the next 5 spots in the running order.

Haufe readily admits that he’d like to add a second-straight Autumn Colours Classic championship to his resume, but a quick check of the standings heading into the province’s premiere auto racing event shows that 45 different Eastern Ontario Legends Series drivers have scored points in at least one feature event this year. The 26 ‘A’ main starters will be chasing a share of a $10,000 race purse. Grand Bend feature winner and Michigan standout Greg Rudzik and 2012 Autumn Colours Thunder Car Champion Smokin’ Joe Adams have also confirmed plans to run with the EOLS teams.

First action for the Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends at the Autumn Colours Classic is slated for Saturday, October 7th, with the tour’s 40 lap regular season finale scheduled for Sunday, October 8th. The 2017 Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends Series season has delivered the ultimate of motorsports excitement lap-after-lap, with every turn of the wheel. After a strong year, the countdown is on and only a pair of events remain before the tour crowns its first champion. Next on the agenda is a return to Sunset Speedway on Saturday, September 23rd.

The popular oval – located north of the Greater Toronto Area – has already played host to a trio of EOLS events, with feature race wins by Matt Haufe, Kevin Foisy and a Saturday, August 5th victory by Robin Jongen in the year’s second qualifier for the U.S. Legends Asphalt Nationals – October 13th and 14th – at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Bullring. Speaking on behalf of the Eastern Ontario Legends team of officials – that also includes Andrew McFadden, Kevin Foisy and Geordie Ledson – Jeff Drimmie says its quite likely the outcome of the inaugural season will come down to the final checkered flag at the Autumn Colours Classic.

“Most of our events have been staged at Peterborough Speedway, but in addition to Sunset, the series has also turned laps at Kawartha and September 9th and 10th, our teams headed west to Grand Bend Speedway’s oval and also ran a test session for a possible future road course date,” Drimmie explained. “Ever since the first green flag of the year, its been our goal to expose the Eastern Ontario Legends Series brand to as many fans as possible and I think we can call our mission a success.”

Drimmie says the east-versus-west events shows at Grand Bend brought some new players into the fold, with U.S. invader Gregory Rudzik taking the Saturday win on the oval after 30 laps of caution-free racing. The combined 2 division event had a total of 9 Saturday races without a single yellow flag. Adam Cuthbertson claimed the victory in the road course test session.

For full details on the Saturday, September 23rd Sunset Speedway event, fans can visit www.sunsetspeedway.ca to get the complete schedule.

2017 Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends Series Schedule

Saturday, May 20th Peterborough Speedway

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Sunday, May 21st Sunset Speedway

Postponed to Monday, May 22nd – Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Friday, June 2nd Kawartha Downs & Speedway

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Saturday, June 3rd Peterborough Speedway

                                                (Toonie Spectator Grandstand Admission)

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Saturday, June 24th Peterborough Speedway

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Saturday, July 8th Peterborough Speedway

                                              (Toonie Spectator Grandstand Admission)

(National Qualifier)

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Qualifiers: Matt Haufe, Robin Jongen, Kevin Foisy

Saturday, July 15th Peterborough Speedway

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Friday, July 21st Kawartha Downs & Speedway

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Saturday, July 22nd Sunset Speedway

Main event winner: #57, Kevin Foisy

Saturday, July 29th Peterborough Speedway

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Saturday, August 5th Sunset Speedway

                                                (National Qualifier)

Main event winner: #28, Robin Jongen

Qualifiers: Robin Jongen, Matt Haufe, Keith McLeod

Saturday, August 19th Sunset Speedway

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe (2 feature wins)

Saturday, August 26th Peterborough Speedway

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Saturday, September 9th Grand Bend Speedway

Main event winner: #17U.S., Gregory Rudzik

Sunday, September 10th Grand Bend Speedway (road course test)

Top 3 finishers: Adam Cuthbertson, Jamie Riberdy, Terry McClelland

Saturday, September 23rd Sunset Speedway

Friday, October 7th to

Sunday, October 9th Peterborough Speedway

                                                (25th Annual Autumn Colours Classic)

Like the Eastern Ontario Legends Series page on www.facebook.com and look for www.ontariolegendseries.ca.
Matt Haufe Returns to Eastern Ontario Legends Series Victory Lane

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

His season-long win streak may have ended a week ago, but that only made Matt Haufe more determined to start a new run of dominating performances with the Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends Series.

The popular tour returned to action – Saturday, July 29th – to close out the month at Canada’s Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval. Jamie Riberdy and Adam Cuthbertson led the field to the green flag and like the other 17 starters, they were after the extra pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Series officials had posted a bonus buck payout to the winner if the 25-lap feature went caution-free and every driver in the starting line-up had their sights set on collecting the cash.

Riberdy and his teammate Cole Ledson took turns at the front of the pack, swapping the lead back and forth during the early stages of the event. Matt Haufe – who except for Kevin Foisy’s July 22nd win at Sunset Speedway, had been the only feature winner this season – took the runner-up position with about a handful of laps on the scoreboard. The pack closed ranks and was working through the backmarkers with 11 laps complete, before the race’s only caution flag waved for a spin in the 4th turn a couple of laps later.

On the restart, Haufe ran in Ledson’s tire tracks for a few laps and the pair actually touched – without incident – on the front stretch, before the driver of the #88 machine took the lead on lap 17. From there, it was hammer-down and full speed ahead for Haufe, whose checkered flag was his 10th in 11 starts, dating back to the 2016 Autumn Colours Classic. Ledson, Cole McFadden, Riberdy and Adam Cuthbertson followed Haufe across the line. Wes Cuthbertson, Dave Riopelle, Parker Traves, Andre Fiorini, Jeff Drimmie, Mark Griffin, Bill Mason, Rick Eades, Andrew McFadden, Don Arnott, Andrew Massey, Dawson Drimmie, Cory Richardson and Jeff Forsey completed the finishing order.

Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends Series notes: Cole Ledson, Matt Haufe, Cole McFadden and Dave Riopelle won qualifying heats earlier in the night…Terry McClelland suffered mechanical issues during practice rounds and in a show of sportsmanship, Dave Riopelle ran the feature race, but the championship points he earned were credited to McClelland…Next on the schedule is the year’s 2nd U.S. Legends Asphalt Nationals Qualifier – Saturday, August 5th – at Sunset Speedway.

2017 Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends Series Schedule

Saturday, May 20th Peterborough Speedway

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Sunday, May 21st Sunset Speedway

Postponed to Monday, May 22nd – Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Friday, June 2nd Kawartha Downs & Speedway

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Saturday, June 3rd Peterborough Speedway

                                                (Toonie Spectator Grandstand Admission)

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Saturday, June 24th Peterborough Speedway

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Saturday, July 8th Peterborough Speedway

                                              (Toonie Spectator Grandstand Admission)

(National Qualifier)

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Saturday, July 15th Peterborough Speedway

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Friday, July 21st Kawartha Downs & Speedway

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Saturday, July 22nd Sunset Speedway

Main event winner: #57, Kevin Foisy

Saturday, July 29th Peterborough Speedway

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Saturday, August 5th Sunset Speedway

                                                (National Qualifier)

Saturday, August 19th Sunset Speedway

Saturday, August 26th Peterborough Speedway

Saturday, September 9th Grand Bend Speedway

Saturday, September 23rd Sunset Speedway

Friday, October 7th to

Sunday, October 9th Peterborough Speedway

                                                (25th Annual Autumn Colours Classic)

Like the Eastern Ontario Legends Series page on www.facebook.com and look for the exciting, new web-site www.ontariolegendseries.ca.
Sunset Speedway Hosts Eastern Ontario Legends National Qualifier Saturday, August 5th

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

Every local racer dreams of getting their shot at the big time. Saturday, August 5th the Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends Series will host the year’s second National Qualifier; this time at Sunset Speedway, just north of Toronto. On the line will be a trio of guaranteed starting spots for the U.S. Legends Asphalt Nationals – October 13th and 14th – at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Bullring.

This will be another preliminary round to select EOLS representatives for the marquee event. Saturday, July 8th – at Peterborough Speedway – Matt Haufe earned the Pro division spot, with Robin Jongen taking the Semi Pro honours and Kevin Foisy claiming Masters division spot. Jeff Drimmie, speaking on behalf of the Eastern Ontario Legends’ officials, says the tour is looking forward to sending its teams to Vegas.

“I’m probably a little bit biased, but I think our series has some of the best racing in the province,” said Drimmie, who along with Andrew McFadden, Geordie Ledson and Kevin Foisy helps keep the Eastern Ontario Legends Series on the road. “At Peterborough, we had 22 teams looking for the checkered flag and one of the 3 guaranteed spots. I think we’ll have at least that many – and probably more – at Sunset. It has the potential to be one of the biggest events the series has ever run.”

During the first National Qualifier, the Eastern Ontario Legends Series roster was bolstered by the addition of South Carolinian Randy Gunton. He was visiting family members north of the border and brought along his racecar. For his first laps with the series, the driver of the #00 finished 6th. Drimmie says tour officials are looking at getting the word out early, to let drivers from both sides of the border know they’re welcomed to compete.

“We’re putting out a huge virtual welcome mat and hope we’ll have a strong turn-out when the green flag flies – Saturday, August 5th – at Sunset Speedway.”

Schedule and event details can be found at www.sunsetspeedway.ca.

2017 Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends Series Schedule

Saturday, May 20th Peterborough Speedway

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Sunday, May 21st Sunset Speedway

Postponed to Monday, May 22nd – Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Friday, June 2nd Kawartha Downs & Speedway

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Saturday, June 3rd Peterborough Speedway

                                                (Toonie Spectator Grandstand Admission)

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Saturday, June 24th Peterborough Speedway

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Saturday, July 8th Peterborough Speedway

                                              (Toonie Spectator Grandstand Admission)

(National Qualifier)

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Saturday, July 15th Peterborough Speedway

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Friday, July 21st Kawartha Downs & Speedway

Main event winner: #88, Matt Haufe

Saturday, July 22nd Sunset Speedway

Main event winner: #57, Kevin Foisy

Saturday, July 29th Peterborough Speedway

Saturday, August 5th Sunset Speedway

                                                (National Qualifier)

Saturday, August 19th Sunset Speedway

Saturday, August 26th Peterborough Speedway

Saturday, September 9th Grand Bend Speedway

Saturday, September 23rd Sunset Speedway

Friday, October 7th to

Sunday, October 9th Peterborough Speedway

                                                (25th Annual Autumn Colours Classic)

Like the Eastern Ontario Legends Series page on www.facebook.com and look for the exciting, new web-site www.ontariolegendseries.ca. The show will also feature the home track 4Fun, Mini Stock, Thunder Car and Late Model divisions.

“We’ve just come off another busy weekend, with back-to-back races,” Drimmie said. “Our car counts are very strong across the board – averaging about 25 at each stop – with some impressive action from green flag to checkered.
Matt Haufe Holds the Hottest Hand on the Eastern Ontario Legends Series

By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications/First Draft Media

Christmas. His birthday. Matt Haufe’s 2017 season on the Trailers Plus Eastern Ontario Legends Series has been a culmination of every special event and cherished memory in the young driver’s life. If there was ever a movie documenting his performance this year, it would likely be a remake of ‘Groundhog Day’. With his 7th checkered flag in as many starts on the tour, Haufe wakes-up every race morning knowing he may very well experience the same result as the time before.

Saturday, July 15th EOLS teams rolled into Peterborough Speedway for the second time in as many weeks. Andrew Massey – a graduate of the home track 4Fun division – and Miles Tyson paced the field from the staging area to the green flag for the 25-lap main event. Tyson – who has made less than a handful of starts this year – took an early lead from the outside, with teammates Cole Ledson and Jamie Riberdy taking the spots behind the #49 car. A yellow flag on the 3rd lap for an incident on the front stretch slowed the pace, with Matt Haufe leading his first laps of the night on the restart.

Cole McFadden – who has been one of the strongest runners on the circuit in recent weeks – moved into 2nd before there were 10 laps on the scoreboard, but Ledson was quick to regain the position. A red flag for a mechanical issue with the #64 of Terry McClelland gave drivers time to plan their late race attacks. Ledson would wrestle the lead away from Haufe on a lap 20 restart, but had it taken away as the white flag waved and Haufe headed to the line with his 7th win of the year. McFadden stole second from Ledson at the checkers, with Riberdy and Adam Cuthbertson rounding-out the top 5.
